Re-engineering and adapting technology is easier than inventing anyway.
But invention has to take place somewhere, did take place somewhere - we might just as well try doing that ourselves. Although we should send out some scouts to find nearby tribes...

Don't we already have chest armor? And do we know yet what injured the guy that died?

(Also, alchemy accomplished some things - the discovery of phosphorus, for example, and the evolution into actual chemistry :P . It could very well be that someone with the same inclinations made the initial discovery of metal. Just my .02 though; maybe there actually are some more important things to do. But couldn't we spare one guy to do stuff like that, just messing around? )

What are ores?
Is that another new type of food?

Nice answer :D

Look for shiny rocks that have a color of dark dried grass.

Sure. i dont know why i would do that, but, it might be fun. We might find some good hunt or farming land on the way. or more people to assimu- i mean, greet.

Yeah, we can do that while foraging for food.

What are we doing with these rocks anyway?
Throw them in a fire.

(Carbon from charcoal/wood would effect reduction)
(Also probably examine other properties. Water, heat, hitting them...)

For what? Stones don't burn.
But we don't know that yet!
Just imagine some kind of shamanic alchemist.

(Or non-shamanic, because we don't have religion yet ;) )

Well, the arab countries that are currently transforming themselves into democracies aren't looking so bad - definitely better than under any of the post-colonial dictators.

Those are reactionary. It's not so much that they're gaining momentum, but getting desperate and throwing everything they can in the way of marriage rights.

Which is exactly what I said, but that doesn't change the fact that there's been a whole bunch of religious law passing in the last ten years.  You can't say that the enforcement of separation of church and state is getting stronger while this is happening.

There's a cultural backdrop of the population becoming more secular.  Then there's a lingering old guard that still holds enough positions of power to see this trend and freak out.  They're putting forth a united effort to erect as many legal barriers to everything that they disagree with as they can, knowing that those will take time to dismantle after they are gone.  The result as I see it is a temporary weakening of separation of church and state enacted in law.

Here's the thing, SalmonGod: Abortion and Gay Rights are not directly involved with the separation of church and state at all. Do most of the people who are pro-life and homophobic have a religious motive? Sure. But not all of them. Hell, I was a pro-life atheist for a while. I still think abortion is an unambiguous evil, just a lesser one.

Yeah, I'm aware of this, but the vast majority of it is religiously motivated.  I'm not sure what point you're making here.

More importantly, it is indirect support, and therefore not related to the separation of church and state.

What is indirect support?... you lost me on this one.

AFAIK seperation of church and state refers to not letting institutional power be exerted by religious authorities. Think of the medieval catholic church and the German emperor! Even if the government modified the laws to comply exactly with the bible, the seperation of church and state would not be touched as long as the bible is not explicitly referenced - because the religious power only exercises informal control.

(Not that I'm in favor of religiously motivated legislation; I just believe it's important to make the distinction; hope this helps.)

1)send 500 Ant mosquito's to gather mammal's DNA (high loses are tolerable)
2) send 500 Vegetarian mosquito to gather biomass and plant DNAs, preferably poisons (High loses are tolerable)
3) Antfishs and insecticarps - hunt for more biomass
I think this is mostly agreed upon.

Yup, start agriculture with a few full-time farmers.

Also look for ores!

Try to breed the lions.
And if a solareclips comes, predict evil to come.( again because of our religion.)
Lets keep out of the religious aspect. Let it form naturaly, not rushed, or we might loose respect.
Well, we should promote religion as it develops (opium for the masses and all that :D )(I mean that as a compliment to religion btw), pushing it in a peaceful, non-xenophobic, solidarity-promoting direction. But do nothing that could harm our social standing!
(Can you call it street cred when there are no streets?)

Also, try to catch some animals. But do nothing dangerous.
Animal farming may be a viable tactic. To make use of the parts of the steppe that can't be used for agriculture, you know.

Antfishes are needed to guard the plants
From what? We killed all the fish.
On the other hand, we're soon gonna be rolling in biomass. Linear fighter, quadratic bioweapon and all that :D

Also, attempt to write poetry.
Unless we're related to Vogons.

Scrap that, especially if we're related to Vogons.

Added this method to the wiki page on exploits.
Hooray, someone doing stuff I'm too lazy to do!

(Seriously though, thanks ;) )

No to replicating small fishes. It's a waste of biomass
But the human will feed us on a regular basis!

(Until we feed on him, that is.)

Actually, you might be right: After killing the human, we can simply find the stored fish food and eat that.
Could we maybe become a land-dwaller, enter the house and start eating the stored foods?

(And what do we need antfishes for after leaving the pond?)

When our dwarves get mattresses for their beds, they're gonna need pillows too - I see a use for feathers...

And yeah, fur. With elves protesting against it :D

[SET:SETTLEMENT_CHILDREN]
(Names the set. This set might have a more nuanced name, but it works as proof of concept.)
(Letters the subsets. The first letter always marks the set as a whole.)
[SUBSET:A:CHILD:CHILDREN] Makes a subset, names it.
[INCLUSION:MEMBER{SETTLEMENT_CITIZEN] Trimmed it; DF should know from the tag position that this refers to subset A.
(Marks the first condition for inclusion. { is used where set theory would use .)
In this case there are no other inclusion conditions. Moving on to expulsion conditions.
[EXPLUSION:MEMBER_AGE=12] Ditto; for the rest I assume you'll spot this.
This would likely look different in the actual constitution. I am no good here at deciding what this set would need to define for its members and what the hard code and the supersets would define. But since it's a proof of concept, it doesn't really matter, does it?
There is no hierarchy to speak of in the set as a whole. Moving on...
[SUBSET:B:BABY:BABIES]
No inclusion condition is here defined- we can assume that it'll just be inherited from set A. Alright, but simply making the tags carry over might lead to confusion and mistakes - stating everything again explicitely would be more laborious, but safer and less complicated.
[EXPULSION:MEMBER_AGE=1]
Onto the hierarchy...
[MEMBER:MOTHER_DEPENDENT]
[MEMBER:NO_JOB]
And onto set C.
[SUBSET:C:CHILD PROPER:CHILDREN PROPER]
[INCLUSION:MEMBER{SETTLEMENT_CHILDREN;A||SETTLEMENT_CHILDREN;B] Stole a bit of C++ syntax here :D This doesn't make much sense here, as everything below could simply go in front of the subset definitions, but to make the general concept clear: Membership of this group is awarded based on membership and/or not-membership of other (sub)sets. The syntax is SET;SUBSET.
[MEMBER:JOBS:BUILD_WALL:HARVEST_PLANT]
I approve of this idea very much, as it would make previously unavailable parts accessible to modding. The syntax needs to be fleshed out, obviously, but I think we're off to a good start.

What's interesting is that clay layers will not contain aquifers - so embark somewhere that has clay and try to dig through it ;) .
When I was new to DF and didn't understand much about... anything, really, I discovered this. Later on I abandoned for some reason :D
