DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Skeletal Goat Shatters Gem Window

I took to putting a row of fortifications in front of the windows, that keeps the buggers out.

They have building destroyer, as I found to my cost when I installed a row of glass windows on the outside of the fortress.

On the subject of respawning animals, some at least to do seem to be infinite.  I've been killing skeletal mountain goats and skeletal giant eagles for sixty fortress-years and they still keep a-comin'.  Perhaps that's with the whole undeath thing though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Much-Maligned Party Statue
« on: November 11, 2008, 07:02:01 am »
I have lots of dwarfs in my fort and several statue gardens.  There is usually a very large amount of work to be done, including masonry (making rock blocks), masonry (building walls), mining (for stone) and hauling (move stone to the masons).  Nearly all the dwarfs have the masonry and stone hauling labours turned on.

In practice, they do not waste any time partying.  At all.  While the building is in progress, all the dwarfs (except nobles, FG, RG and military) go to work, constantly.  They do not waste any time.  When the building stops, they go back to partying.

When they do party, it helps them gain skills (and hence indirectly stats) and (I believe) helps them form friendships and romantic liaisons.  Noble dwarfs with high social skills are (I believe) more effective at preventing unhappiness.  Also, if a statue garden includes any particularly spiffing furniture the dwarfs will get happy thoughts, and if you have different types of good furniture (eg. if you dump all those artifact millstones, floodgates, hatches etc. into your statue gardens) they will get several happy thoughts.

Also, you can be fairly sure that your statue gardens will have at least one member of the Guard hanging around, so you can use them to position your defences.  (assuming you value the presence of the Guard; I do, you may prefer not to have a Guard)

Aaanyway, reason I'm saying this is that I keep seeing people saying how awful parties are, and I just don't think that's the case.  It may once have been true, but parties don't currently harm your dwarfs productivity.

I also don't believe that dwarfs having friends from partying has a serious effect on tantrum spirals.  If anything it may (properly managed) have a positive effect, because your dwarfs will have social skills that can help reduce tantrums, they can get *lots* of happy thoughts from partying, and they will all be more resilient to injury (as they will have higher stats).

Thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Please Pontificate on Pressure Plate Plan
« on: November 11, 2008, 06:35:56 am »
Heavy amounts of water flowing through hatches connected to pressure plates can be horrible to framerate, I hope that your pressure plate system is ok if you can get just a trickle.

I think most large forts get to the point where the "items created" limit has been well and truly exceeded and only the "stone mined" limit is relevant.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarf torture

I will submit it, she died after a goblin ambush was led to her by the outpost liaison. I do wish that they had not come around yet, I was looking forward to seeing how much one dwarf could endure.

Hmmph, you might at least have sent out a rescue party.   :P

That's... exceptionally grim.  Recover him, and surround his sickbed with monkey-skull totems.

What's wrong w/ statue gardens?
parties.

Parties have their uses.   :-*  They allow you to place your Fortress Guards where you choose, for starters.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What to do with Dwarf bones?
« on: November 09, 2008, 12:05:13 pm »
Not entirely - I have had a small number of objects in my current fort created using dwarf materials (bones, leather) but only a tiny number.

(edit - and no, they weren't from fell / macabre moods!)
By any chance would these items have brackets around them, indicating that they weren't created IN your fort?

I've just checked, and the answer is mixed.  There is indeed a dwarf leather bracelet which was created outside the fort.  However,  I count four dwarf skull totems created by "Uppy" Razdodok, a bonecrafter in the fort, and I'm fairly sure (short of examining every single one of thousands of crafts I can't think of an easy way to check!) that dwarf bone has been used on other items as decoration.  I definitely remember having some dwarf hide in the stores at one point soon after HFS, which was tanned to dwarf leather - I'm not sure what became of that.

It's a curious one...

Reportedly it depends on what they hit (apparently elephants are wonderful experience, while archery targets are meh) - unfortunately I don't know the numbers.

Oh gawd.  I hadn't even considered that they might get different gains from different targets.  :(  Oh well thanks anyway all, I guess I'll just continue with my current approach of "sustained massive deforestation until most of them are legendary."   ;D

Anyone know how many practice bolts must be fired for a dwarf to reach legendary marksdwarf status?

Not entirely - I have had a small number of objects in my current fort created using dwarf materials (bones, leather) but only a tiny number.  I'm not sure what the circumstances were, it's possibly due to HFS, although most if not all of the HFS related ones were buried normally in coffins.  I guess there are some instances in which the bone is not marked as "friendly" - possibly when a body part is severed, but the owner lives?

(to expand on that slightly, there's still a bug where not all bits of enemies are forbidden on death, even if you have the forbid on, so that may be related - something isn't getting marked when it should)

(edit - and no, they weren't from fell / macabre moods!)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What can be decorated with what?

Well, wooden furniture should be able to be "upholstered" with cloth or leather. Since wood is already ridiculously cheap it should get some kind of bonus.

They should!  Well, chairs and tables and beds at least.   :)  That would be pretty cool.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tamed Vermin as Pet ?
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:13:31 am »
One interesting thing about vermin - they seem to be immortal.  Very long-lived pets, if you can only get someone to adopt them in the first place - better than short-lived cats and dogs and whatnot.
