Other Games / Re: Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
« on: March 02, 2013, 09:22:42 pm »
I just played this for the first time, it's quite fun. I tried to go for a crazed swordsman-type character as a sort of test run, but I found guns almost immediately (both a well-stocked gun shop and a gun storage shelter in someone's basement- I had a Mossberg, a pistol, and a G36!) and never any decent cutting weapons. I also realized how SUPER OP guns are, even with the noise factor. I got about 55 kills and was searching for food on my second day (with food being ridiculously scarce in this town!) and this happened:

Well... I managed to kill about 20 of them, and I actually though I had a chance at winning, but I severely underestimated both the zombie necromancer (which ended up raising many of the 50 zombies I had killed in the same area back to life) and the zombie brute (which killed me in one hit at light green health.) Moral of the story: RUN!

For the sake of curiosity, can someone tell me how you'd get cursed and become a vamp?
Maybe you had some vampire blood splatters on you and it got into your wound. I think you can get it that way.

I'm really hopeful about this. People in r/gaming get really passionate about their games, and I would really love to see Dwarf Fortress included up among the best- if we can win their hearts, the DF community will earn fresh people to discuss with and inject new ideas, more money for Toady as someone else said, a further advancement in this style of game, incredible fan creations (mods, fanart, videos) as have been shown for other games many times previously in r/gaming, but most important of all... FRESH BLOOD, FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Sharp stones as throwing weapon
« on: February 24, 2012, 06:09:56 pm »
knapping just applies an edge to the stone.  just about any edged weapon (including real knives) are better for melee.  the stones are better as ranges, as there is a 100% chance the hit will use the edge, rather than some lesser chance, as there is some chance to use any of the damagy types available to a thrown weapon (flat of the blade slap with swords, for example)

This, also if your skill gets high enough you may make ☼Masterful☼ quality sharpened stones, which will double its to-hit modifier.

The tablet used to learn necromancy can weigh upwards of 150 urists. That's probably your problem.

DF Suggestions / Spices!
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:35:48 pm »
Right, so you know how decorated items get «this» designation? My idea is that you can use spices or other food additives like salt, honey, Dwarven Sugar & Syrup, Golden Salve, etc. to do the same for meals. Maybe blood, to appease Armok as well as the vampire dwarves? What do you guys think?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why won't my dwarves haul food properly?
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:56:20 pm »
Are your dwarves restricted by burrows (possibly due to alert settings, or manual assignment) to prevent them reaching the stockpile (or kitchen for that matter)?

Do you have any idle dwarves and do they have the appropriate hauling labours enabled?

Do you have any stones/other items that have been hidden where the stockpiles were designated?

Have you accidentally cut off access between areas of your fort (eg. removing up stairs by accident on a level, forbidding a door, a mason walling themselves in somewhere)?

And from looking at the list of stuff there... do you have stockpiles set to accept the required items? (Prepared meals are a special option under food listed at the bottom right accessed via 'u', while booze is obviously under the 'drinks' subsection - if you've set up your stockpiles using custom settings it's possible one or other may have been disabled)
1. I don't mess with burrows, I have no idea how to use them.
2. Yes, I have a bunch of idle dwarves (15?) in the dining room/meeting hall just south of the kitchen/brewing area.
3. No, in the picture you can see the food stockpiles surrounding the kitchen/brewery to the north are all cleared of any crap.
4. No, the stockpiles are right next to the workshops, no door around, and plenty of nearby dwarves. Meals pile up in the kitchen and booze gets thrown around the still. Nothing goes to a stockpile until it rots and gets thrown in the refuse stockpile, which makes the whole thing even more aggravating.
5. Yes, prepared meals are enabled, and it's not even just that- seeds won't get stored either, I have plenty of bags, plenty of barrels, yet I actually saw a dwarf move an empty barrel -out- of the food stockpile and into the furniture stockpile when a chef emptied it, instead of using the barrel to store food into.

DF Gameplay Questions / Why won't my dwarves haul food properly?
« on: February 14, 2012, 05:39:19 pm »
I've had this problem in my last couple fortresses, sometimes my dwarves will just stop hauling food.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't figure out any reason why this happens, I set up new food stockpiles above the kitchens but they still won't use them. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

There's a couple Dwarf Fortress LPers I like, but none of them are really good enough/have enough attention span to get past the initial party of the hidden fun stuff. Are there any good video series that go past this?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Biggest wtf moment

I just killed a Hill Titan made of Black Pyrope with no real problems, looted his shrine, and then decided to take one of his severed toes with me as a trophy. Apparently he was a REALLY HOT titan, even though my Pikeman buddy was fine after being carried a long ways by the titan in his armpit. Anyway, I picked up his toe, and all of my toes started melting. I didn't think it was such a big deal since it was just my toes, and I had recently gotten all my foot fat melted off by a dragon and I came out fine. I dropped it and started waiting. Bled to death. You will be missed, Isa Talkedtoasts. :(
