i've got a fat named cave crocodile attack me, and take out some children (great service there), then my 10 man squad engages it, all the wrestlers punch it tearing its muscles, while the guys equipped with steel are slicing away at its far. i'd say it's been going on for well over a season, the thing is too exhausted to fight back, but is just too fat to die.

is fat stronger than steel? :)

first failed mood on this fort - crafter demanded stone, apparently if its not his favourite it doesn't count - he went berserk and was promptly embedded with bolts

my dwarves keep trying to drink from my inhouse waterfall, spamming me with "Dwarf Cancels drink: water source vanished". I have my water source zone set as outside - what gives?

built a 10 tile long quadriple waterfall to keep my dwarves happy, as they were quite unhappy recently.

apparently if the water falls on them from that distance they aren't happy, especially if they get injured and contaminate the whole water with blood :)

also, my miner channeled into a 2 tile high room, and got himself all dirty with red stuff, he didn't like that. heck he's even gone missing

last but not least, i've salvaged their happiness just by giving them drinks and something to eat, turns out eating vermin is not their favourite food

Everything was going fine, just repelled a siege of goblins and collected the loot and bodies...then chaos from inside the fort.

Inglish Mebzuthfenglel Etomdorenlanzil Atzul, Blood Beast Planter was his name.

So apparently one of my dwarves was cursed with being a Blood Beast and just eliminated a 120+ strong fort on his own (not including war animals and other creatures). The description of him says that "this type of creature is found near the underworld", although the controlled dwarf was a grower that lived near the surface. Not sure how that works out. I didn't see any type of message prior to the grower transforming and slaughtering everybody.  The last thing I did was open the third cavern layer and seal it off.

The damage report on him is a full screen worth of scars, broken bones, dents, fractures, bruises and is missing two pieces: the left leg (all the way to the upper portion) and his left hand. There are still 6 dwarves left alive and a couple of animals, although they are about to be finished by him (he's quite determined to kill EVERYTHING). Even missing a leg doesn't seem to have slowed him down. He's an unstoppable creature of poisonous blood and a lust for combat.

He basically just transformed and started tearing dwarf by dwarf into pieces and consumed their blood. Any thing that he attacked instantly made a cloud of miasma (rotted the flesh immediately), so I couldn't even see what was happening. I still don't even know where or how it came from. The grower in question never left the first 3 layers in all the time he lived in the fort.

I had embarked in an untamed wilds area, nowhere near any evil places. I didn't get into hfs or even find the candy, so running into something this impossible to fight is :/. He just appeared in the middle of the dining room and had his own party. I am greatly confused by this turn of events. Guess I have to start a new fort. I just don't even know how he even.

Edit: Last 2 dwarves alive finally managed to kill him, and then...
A VILE FORCE OF DARKNESS HAS ARRIVED!
Have fun with the blood you guys!

....He can resurrect himself it seems. I was just viewing over his corpse and then he came back to life (not a zombie or anything, so no necromancer hiding). He wiped out the siege party and then died again. Since he was a dwarf, the game ended when he re-died (nobody else was left alive).

What a crazy fort.

A were-blood man ?  :o

i'd love to get one of those. have had 'fun' in every other way, that would just be icing on the cake

have a perfectly trapped entrance to fort, when an undead siege comes along, a good 60 strong. most get caged, and when i start running low on traps, i close the front gate so i can reissue the cages.

well... turns out my perfect defence is not quite so perfect...

apparently i dont have any booze in my base, let alone water, so while i'm waiting for the cages to be restocked, everyone is dying of thirst (instead of placing the cages).

so i opened the front gates and let em storm out. winners get to drink, losers turn into zombies

EDIT: Fortress now down to a managable size of 8, zombies still outside

EDIT2: Finally get it back down to 1 undead roaming my outside, thinking of rebuilding with my remaining 5 (2 still seem to be in a mediocre mood), when lo and behold, another undead siege of 30 zombies. I'm definately reclaiming though :)

yet more development...

thought my fort was safe, have a 20 cage trap long single file entrance. ofcourse a 30 manned undead army shows up. lucky the marksdwarves shot down the remaining 10 while the chaff (everyone militarized) kept em at bay on the single tile line to the fort.

it was too many migrants anyway...

EDIT: Party's over - necromancer snuck in through second route and reanimated my inhouse graveyard, even had cage traps specifically for that, but there were more secret necros than traps :(

I have never ever gotten a migrant that wasn't your run-of-the-mill normal guy.
No one-eyed migrant, no dwarf with even one kill.

Seriously, what sort of worlds are you guys embarking on?

well the first world (in the latest version) i made, had me lose to sieges (sometimes up to 40 zombies) before the end of the first year. lost a good 10+ fortresses on that map.

made a second one that is in a golden age, probably what you have. its been three years and not even an attack of any sort. got boring so went back to the first map :)

so in the 3rd year my first caravan finally arrives (no idea what happened to first 2), and i still got nothing to trade, oh well better luck next time

also no migrants in that time (didnt attract any), then suddenly BANG, a wave of 38 migrants to compliment my current group of 8.

finally get my first mood after all that, guy claims a leatherworks, grabs all the gray langur leather he can then waits for metal bars. i'm thinking this is gonna be great (dont we always?), and i make him some iron bars. he ends up crafting a gray langur leather thong, with plenty of gray langur stuff, and an iron image of a copper axe on it.

my craftsdwarf, the only one unhappy, out of all ecstatic dwarves, was crafting bone bolts

suddenly throws a tantrum, breaks his workshop, bolts fly everywhere, then he calms down

sounds like he needs a different job - anyone know how i can force him to stand next to a waterfall?

Recruit the dwarf and seal him in a room for a year.

If he starves to death, he was innocent.

Haha brilliant. Every migrant should take this test as an initiation.

An undead siege comes - consisting of only one undead goblin corpse.

Figure i should be able to deal with this and not close the front gate i send my three marksdwarves in. (ps: none of them want to equip their quivers so no actual ranged combat occurs. I took 2 quivers at start but no matter if i disband and recreate they refuse to equip quivers - anyone know what else i can do?)

Anyway back to the massive one man siege. The three marksmen manage to kill the goblin, with one of them dying. I was a bit sad but heck, at least the siege is broken. Well apparently no, the dead dwarf becomes undead, and the goblin pieces (about 10 of em) all reanimate, and now i got 11 attackers. Recruit everyone and just barely survive, but the fort is gone. In fact thats the 9th fort on this map that's failed due to undead (2 tower civs on map), about bloody time to start a new map.

btw - whats best practice for killing undead without losing your entire fort?
