DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack [0.31.25] [V9.3] NOT UPDATED YET

I use the LNP and I would like to make quickfort templates but every folder in my LNP main folder is Read Only and I can disable and apply that a thousand times, but it stays that way. Is there a known solution to this?

Yes.  A dwarf with multiple positions that require offices can use a single office for all positions.  He doesn't need separate managing and bookkeeping offices.

Thank you.
I recently discovered the manager and I found that position to be very handy but I just got organized dwarves with migrations around 80 dwarves. So now I'm trying an embark with no initial skills in mining but some skills in the stuff I usually waited to come through migrations but which never came when i needed them. And am trying to tailor functions to traits and attributes.

Can a manager/bookkeeper noble come by with 1 office? Has anyone else done this before?  I'm about to try it but if there are already some experiences or thoughts about it i would like to hear them.

Can one dwarf be multiple nobles? Say Bookkeeper and manager?

I have a game which I saved when I noticed the new immigrant stream put me over 80 dwarves before I was ready to withstand sieges. And they indeed came too early. Afterwards I changed the invaders setting on my LNP interface and restarted Dwarf Fortress via the LNP and it happened again, twice already. Any idea why it doesn't seem to work for me?

Thank you. I was OCD smoothing all my rooms before i put beds and chests and cabinets in and by the time my engravers were done the next load of migrants came and the previous lot were unhappy for sleeping in the dirt.:P

If there are items in a rough hewn stone room does that prevent smoothing it?

Learn Dvorak.

Learn to use your brain before typing:
...The Dvorak layout is intended for the English language...

And not for games with deficient interfaces.

Ah thank you, I wasn't aware the english language has a different alphabet than the characters the GUI of Dwarf Fortress uses.

I wonder how I managed with my Dvorak Layout...

You know, i played DF for a while, I forged some metal weapons, killed a few titans, was fun but... i just got tired of the interface.
Now i only lurk this forums, from time to time, hoping for the 'Presentation Arc' and the 'Interface Overhaul'.
Anyone here who says the interface is "Ok" are retarded fans with no objective view of the problem.
You can get RSI just for playing DF.

Bye forums, c ya in another several months or maybe not.

Learn Dvorak.

It seems it isn't necessary then. I like the idea of making them. So I'll do both. Refuse stockpiles and constructed 3x3 chimneys with the middle outer squares grates and a hole in the middle. Sealed off with a floor.

If I would like to make chimneys for my tanners and butchers, is channeling out the central tile enough? Or is there a special tile that needs to be vented then?

DF General Discussion / Re: Music That Just Says, 'Dwarf Fortress'
« on: January 23, 2012, 01:14:10 pm »
I really like playing tundra/taiga maps and listening to Summoning. A Melodic Blackmetal band which base all their songs on Tolkiens universe. Pretty slow music with a desolate atmosphere.

A song like this speaks to my imagination:

Land of the Dead(About Mordor)

And If I'll ever conquer the HFS I'll blast this through my sennheiser, Same kind of music so if you don't like it don't try it.

Procession of The Dead Clowns.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Modular burrow-based Fortress.
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:49:58 pm »
Goodday to you fellow beardlings and beardless.

I have been working on and trying to design a modular fortress based around a vision of how it should look like and function.
One part of it is that I like odd numbers for mostly everything. I like spaceous design and the idea that industrial dwarves live in burrows where they have stockpiles to build from, their workshop and their personal room. Living blocks for dwarves that are not bound to a location for their work.

I also envision a central floor for facilities such as dining, hospital, jail etc which will function as one facility burrow to decrease the amount of burrows each dwarf must be assigned to.
4 generous staircases in the corners of the pattern.

There is only a slight problem. I am kind of landed in a viscious circle, I would like to play longer fortresses but I can't seem to organize it in the long run and I can't figure all the modules out because of my lack of lengthy fortress plays.

Currently I have this as a small sum of my ideas:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a64/OlMoth/ModularFortress.png

In the centre is a 4x 9x9 stockpile module. Left is a living block module. On the top was my idea for a workshop/living quarters and required 3x3 stockpiles to produce the goods or product desired.

Concrete questions: Stuff like how many farmers does it take to service a 3x7 field and such things as I need to take that into consideration for designing these modules.

I know many of you play freehand and don't like OCD fortresses, but if this even remotely interests you or you have ideas to add I would be very grateful.

Kind Regards,
Urist McEngineer.

I'll try it and have fun I suppose. At least I get to try to kill some elk and muskox along the way.

I considered pairing the magma and water stack so the water stack won't get frozen and create constructions so I can minimize the waterdrop to 1z level at a time.
