Soviet Storm Rising (Let's Play Update)

January 1, 1992

The world is a very different place. While the Soviet Union managed to survive into 1992 and avoid breaking apart, their recent defeat at the hands of NATO have reduced them to a third rate power. The Warsaw Pact is history, the Soviet military is a shadow of its former self, and Communism has become a secondary concern. NATO and Soviet leaders signed a peace treaty on New Year's Day, formally ending the Third World War. China has taken the Soviet Union's place as America's primary opponent and by extension Nationalism has replaced Communism as the primary bad guy ideology. Current sentiment with Socialist France is just as bad as with Nationalist China. Many NATO countries, particularly Germany, remain very bitter toward France for abandoning the NATO alliance in favor of a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union shortly before the outbreak of World War III. Many even went as far as to compare the actions of France to the actions of 1940's Francoist Spain and called for action to be taken against Paris ranging from embargoes to military attack.

You should be doing what the US is doing in real life: Become best buddies with China's neighbors.

I think crippling China's economy is the best long-term method.

And your poll regarding German takeover of France is wrong: The Germany tried to take over France prior to WW1.
I was referring to the number of times that Germany actually took Paris, the first two being the Franco-Prussian War and World War II.

Edit: However you're right and I have already edited the poll regarding German takeover of France.

I'm down for some sanctioning action.
I've already made the sanctioning threat and China went ahead with the strike anyways. Fortunately France didn't retaliate with anything more then a statement of condemnation. The primary objectives I face are restoring the peace, helping Israel deal with the Centralists, and deciding on the fate of Imperialist Cyprus. I will probably also make good on my threat and restrict trade with China; trade relations with the Soviets might be upgraded from "closed" to "restricted" as a gesture of good faith and in the honor of the upcoming peace treaty.

I don't like nukes, and China is becoming a threat.  Take the money and run?
The possibility of a nuclear conflict has been significantly reduced. An armistice has ended active combat between NATO and the Soviet Union. At the moment I am focusing primarily on raising the peace levels of my allies though I am also taking the opportunity to help my allies takeover a few Centralist countries. Once I reach the start of 1992, I intend to put together yet another scenario which will depict the Chinese-led Nationalists as the new bad guy alliance with the Soviet-led Communists being a secondary concern.

Soviet Storm Rising (CRISIS ALERT!)

December 2, 1991

Nationalist China is preparing to launch a surgical strike against Socialist France. Neither country is really on friendly terms with the United States so it is almost pointless to get involved militarily and risk a Fourth World War so soon after winning the Third. However since both parties involved are nuclear powers, it is possible however unlikely that this one surgical strike might trigger a French nuclear response. If that happened, China would almost certainly launch a nuclear retaliatory strike against France which would result in great loss of life throughout Western Europe. In that event, America would have little choice but to retaliate in kind against China.

Soviet Storm Rising (Let's Play Update - NATO Defeats Warsaw Pact)

September 19, 1991

Just one week after the Warsaw Pact had failed in taking over (West) Germany, Combined NATO Forces have overrun the Warsaw Pact countries throughout Eastern Europe. The Reunification of Germany is complete and the Soviet Union has lost their Warsaw Pact allies to NATO occupation. The Soviet Union has been demoted to "Minor Power" status and is most definitely in no position to threaten NATO again for years perhaps even decades. It is highly likely that the fighting in Africa will not be ending anytime soon; since the countries being attacked are Centralist and Imperialist, chances are the U.S. won't risk further loss of life to get involved in "bad guy versus bad guy" conflicts.

Soviet Storm Rising (Let's Play Update - NATO Victory in West Germany

September 12, 1991

After over a year of war, NATO won a major victory when Soviet-led troops fighting in (West) Germany were forced to surrender. The Soviets also lost their foothold in the Americas with the surrenders of Cuba and Nicaragua as well as the total withdrawal of troops from the region. With the surrender of Cuba to U.S. occupation, the Cuban troops that were fighting in the ongoing conflicts in South Africa and Zaire were forced to pull out which effectively prolonged both conflicts. With Warsaw Pact casualties 3,000,000+ compared to NATO casualties 200,000+, there is no denying that NATO has come out on top and that the Soviet Union is no longer capable of engaging a major campaign outside its borders relying solely on conventional means. Should NATO take offensive actions against the Warsaw Pact, a conventional victory is an almost certainty provided that the Soviets don't decide to resort to their strategic arsenal. However even if no offensive action is taken, NATO has already achieved victor status.

With U.S. military assistance, Israel began a ten-day campaign throughout the Middle East. During the campaign, contract assassin Jason Bourne was hired in secret by the U.S. President to eliminate Saddam Hussein. The campaign concluded with Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait under Israeli military occupation. Unfortunately since Imperialist Saudi Arabia is rated as "Cooperation", any attempt to continue the campaign further WILL (not probably) result in my Secretary of Defense tendering his resignation. As a result the unfriendly countries throughout the rest of the Arabian Peninsula are out of Israel's reach for now.

Soviet Storm Rising (Let's Play & Scenario Update)

I have updated the scenario Soviet Storm Rising. Panama has become a U.S. holding and the events file was updated to indicate an invasion of (West) Germany from the Soviet Union. I have also edited the Read Me file, eliminating bad pointers and adding some good ones. It is best to read that particular file over before playing.

My current "Let's Play" has reached the start of 1991; due to the unique arrangement of global politics such as Nationalist China, I have decided to add "Soviet Storm Rising II" as a second scenario set on January 1, 1991.

Breaking News!

At exactly midnight on September 21, 1990, America was viciously attacked by terrorists from Congo. The terrorists in question triggered an explosion at a chemical plant in Montana, claiming the lives of over 500 American citizens. The President is currently weighing several options of retaliation against Congo including blocking trade and potential military strikes. The latter is risky since Congo is an ally of the Soviet Union and risks retaliation. Even if military force is used, chances are it will be via airstrike and special operations rather then military invasion due to the fact that over 90% of the military is already committed to combat operations around the globe.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit Update: The U.S. has retaliated against Congo for the terrorist attack in Montana. Aside from the usual condemnation and full trade embargo, the U.S. Navy attacked a military installation on the outskirts of Brazzaville with a cruise missile strike. 398 Congolese military personnel and 80 civilians were killed in the attack; furthermore all Congolese nuclear spending was eliminated. The Soviet Union while irritated has not militarily retaliated against our nation.

Let's Play Shadow President (Soviet Storm Rising)

July 1, 1990

It is one month to the day since the start of the Third World War. Soviet-led Warsaw Pact forces continue their invasion of (West) Germany. Both sides have sustained considerable losses in the tens of thousands. Roughly three quarters of the U.S. Armed Forces have been committed to the defense of (West) Germany; all military and covert financial aid has been pulled from non-aligned countries and rerouted over to NATO and U.S. has withdrawn from Saudi Arabia (one less reason for Osama to attack America) & Egypt. Additional U.S. forces were also deployed to Central America to defend Honduras from invading Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Soviet forces; North Korean troops have also invaded South Korea so yet more troops may need to be deployed overseas. In late June '90, the Second Tiananmen Square Revolt escalated when Chinese Nationalists marched on Beijing and overthrew the Communist Party; should make for an interesting "Capitalists versus Nationalists" Cold War II down the road; or "Capitalists versus Nationalists versus Communists" should the Soviet Union be spared from invasion. Iraq sponsored a coup in Saudi Arabia; Imperialists are now in charge.

August 1, 1990

Conflict has erupted in nearly every corner of the globe from Europe to Asia and from Latin America to Africa. Over 90% of the U.S. Armed Forces have been deployed to Europe, Latin America, and Asia to protect U.S.A. World Team Alliance members from continuing Communist aggression. Sending additional troops to Africa to defend the Centralists and Imperialists would risk leaving the U.S. open for invasion so there's not much that can be done about the Communist expansions there. No additional coups have occurred the previous month. Due to the Nationalist takeover increasing China's ethics from 1.0 to 2.0, the scheduled invasion of Taiwan was cancelled.

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play Shadow President (Obsolete)
« on: September 15, 2016, 08:00:09 pm »
Since User "Angel Of Death" has entered into an indefinite period of cybernetic hibernation resulting in the death of the previous "Let's Play Shadow President" here on Bay 12 Games, I have decided to personally start up a new topic from scratch. I am also pleased to report that the long-awaited scenario "Soviet Storm Rising" has finally been released; I repeat the new scenario has finally been released and has been uploaded onto Google Drive.

The scenario will start off with the Soviet Union and her Warsaw Pact allies having just begun their full-scale invasion of (West) Germany. All of NATO is actively committed to the defense of (West) Germany with the exception of the United States. It is entirely up to the player to immediately join in the conflict thereby committing to a tense shooting war with the Soviet Union OR remain neutral thereby leaving Europe to their fate. Do keep in mind however that the Soviet Union will very shortly begin a series of surgical strikes upon the United States. If successful, Soviet leadership will be 100% while U.S. leadership is sliced down to roughly 30%. Furthermore the Soviet Union will make an assassination attempt; it is actually possible to get knocked out before the first week had even gone by. Even if assassination is avoided, it is still possible to lose a single advisor which could certainly hurt in the long-term. Over the first month, additional fighting breaks out in Latin America and the Korean Peninsula. Over the second month, conflicts erupt throughout Africa. Priority should obviously be given to U.S.A. World Team Alliance members with most military aid money and troop deployments reserved for the defense of (West) Germany. The conflict could remain entirely conventional OR it could very well go nuclear.

I am also pleased to report that I am well into putting together yet ANOTHER scenario. This one will be called "World Socialist Order" which is an alternate sequel and sort of the "Super Iraq" version of "Soviet Storm Rising". The Soviet Union won World War III and Europe is dominated by Communism and Socialism. Russia and China are the dominate world powers while the U.S. has become a third rate power. U.S. ideology is changed to Nationalist and the country is in a civil war. China's ideology changed to Democratic Socialist and is in a new cold war with the USSR.

IMPORTANT EDIT: DO NOT resort to camping in the War Room to try to stave off impeachment. Doing so can lead to in-game glitches including bugged maps, consistent game freezes on advisor pages, etc.

Update Edit: Scenario download link has been updated.

Made excellent progress on Soviet Storm Rising. Trade relations, ideologies, territorial holdings, etc. have been set. Still must modify troops deployments and other factors -- taking short break. For now, I would like to post some screenshots from a gameplay from a long while back.

Background: Iraq invades Kuwait. I do not respond. I withdraw from Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Iraq invades Saudi Arabia. Iraq invades Jordan. All this time I do nothing and stay neutral. The following year I coup Iraq and all its holdings into Capitalist. I get Iraq to join the United States WTA. Iraq invades Iran with US aid. The following year the Middle East for the most part is at peace.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was from playing the default virtual earth scenario. Next time I will attempt this on the Super Iraq scenario at the very beginning to avert the invasion of Israel and gain a new ally against the Chinese.

42
A number of countries will be under the military control of another. Here is a list of the countries and their new holdings.

United States: Mexico & Panama
Soviet Union: Iceland & Guam
Iraq: Iran, Neutral Zone, & Afghanistan

A majority of the ideology changes have been implemented as well as the territories that will be under USA control. Also adjusted the war/peace levels. Next step will be to establish other controlled countries followed by rearrangement of trade relations. Will very likely take short breaks between step in order to avoid rushing too fast. That is kind of what cause my previous attempts on this scenario to fail miserably.

Update: Soviet Union will control these territories in addition to the ones listed above: Faroe Islands, Svalbard, & Jan Mayan. I figured if the Soviets grabbed Iceland, they may as well grab Scandinavian Islands in the North Sea area between Iceland and the Soviet Union. This will add more challenge to the player as this removes Svalbard as a staging ground to counter-invade the Soviet Union. Taking Faroe Islands gives the Russians an additional staging area to invade the United Kingdom.

43
How did the US lose initiative is such a major way? (unless I misunderstood, Soviets have already taken Iceland and Guam, and we're still at DEFCON 2)
fake edit: huh. DEFCON doesn't mean what I though it does (which was 'the condition of defense readiness', as per acronym- basically a country-wide REDCON), I would still expect it to be 1 when soviets start landing on US soil (US soil overseas, like Hawaii and Alaska, is still called that, right?)
The idea of having Iceland being taken so quickly (got that from Red Storm Rising) was so that the Soviet Union would have a launching platform to invade the United Kingdom. As for occupying Guam, it gives the Soviets another angle to invade the United States. Mexico is likely going to be under US occupation. Panama most certainly will due to a different post-conflict policy following Operation Just Cause.

US conventional forces would most certainly be at REDCON 1. DEFCON 1 would only be reached should conflict actually go nuclear. I could add that.

44
Remember: Changing ideologies, ethics, and ambition is the easy part. Once it is totally completed, I still need to make other changes such as trade status, set up military occupations, modify troop deployments, etc. And lets not forget programming upcoming events, most definitely essential given the nature of the scenario.

Obviously World War III cannot be avoided as it has already begun. From what I can tell, the player will have four options at the very start of the game. One: Fight back with full conventional might of the US military. Two: Limit fighting to the liberation of all Soviet occupied territories. Three: Try to initiate peace talks immediately rather then risk nuclear war by fighting back, thereby making the Soviet Union the de facto winner of the war. Four: Retaliate with full scale nuclear first strike.

45
Well after being on hiatus for several months, I have finally started the scenario project up again. In other words, Soviet Storm Rising is back in business! There will be a number of changes which should improve the game playing experience as well as increase the challenge even further. For starters, the Cold War was heating up but had not quite escalated into hot war during the first couple weeks. In this new version, the Third World War is already officially underway. The Democratic Socialist "neutral" Bloc led by India will not be included this time. All WTA members on both sides will be set at either "limited war" or "total war". Due to the obvious threat of nuclear war, no country is truly at peace. As a result all countries not involved in the war or any unrelated regional conflict will be set for "low conflict". The United Kingdom is not out of reach this time either; they too can be invaded.

Thus far I am working on changing ideologies, ambition, and ethics. I have completed most of those changes.

More to come soon...
