DF Modding / Some modding questions....
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:42:35 pm »
Ok, i tried the wiki and as I don't wanna go sifting thorough mountains od old threads, I wanted to ask a coupole things for a weapon I'm trying to mod in.

Currently unless a killing strike to the head with the hand guard or pommel, it's slash doesn't cut deep enough. At least not when used by a human player, typically at worst tearing fat. What value controls how deep it will penitrate? I'm aiming for a weapon that can slice through damn near anything lacking several layers of armor plating.

And what value will determine fit a mainly slashing weapon best for contact area?

Help will be apreciated.

I'm taking all suggestion on what I should do. I wanted to try and see if I could save Syrupleaf (a travesty, I know) during it's death throws but Megaupload was given the big "Fuck You" by the US government, rendering that plan impossible.

Come on denizens of Bay 12! What shall I do first on this older-than-dirt version of 40d?

The fortress has run its course. Feel free to read and enjoy, and discuss the strange setting we made and the sequel to be made!

Welcome to Spearbreakers! The hopeful epic for DF2012! WARNING: TEXT BLOCKS TO FOLLOW.

With a combination of modding and decent involvement on the part of overseers and the community at large, I hope to forge the first epic of the new version, to hopefully be surpassed in insanity by greater tales for the new version spawned from this. I encourage everyone to get involved in some way! Stories, doodles, insane rambling and speculation, come on board for the awaiting insanity! Hell, we managed to start a timewar before one overseer got his first proper update up.

There are a number of overseers already lined up, so that a stable base is in place for more to join on. Credits to the Spearbreakers modding team: Mr Frog (mystery race, testing,) Myself (Splint; Mountain Barbarians, testing) and Talvieno (Very involved in testing and idea contribution) for most of what was done, and Hugo_The_Dwarf for providing the stone warhammer and anvil casting reactions.

Before anything, I'll list specifically what was done.

And now, Challenges!

Concession to FPS concerns: FPS Seems to enjoy taking random dips to nothingness. Autuodump and fastdwarf for noncombat purposes are allowed. If you don't want to entrust a monument to the next guy, I'd strongly advise the fastdwarfing.

Ok, now for the Dwarves
Starting seven

Overseers:

Standard spring to spring turns. You have three days to claim the save and two weeks to complete the game unless a steady stream of updates is given or we're informed of any RL hold-ups which will be given an extention. Force the sake of trimming down the list, only two turn skips are permissable before you're removed from the turn list. You can request as many new turns as you like, however there must be a minimum of 3-4 turns between your turns.

Turns List

Ok boys and girls, due to a recent curse we've been struck by, I've dropped the current turn list in favor of a more stable and hopefully reliable system. All previous overseers are now free to sign up every third turn for another round, and there will be a max of six players who know they'll be available when their turn rolls around. Hope that's cool with everyone.

Splint - Year 1 - [COMPLETE]
Talvieno - Year 2 - [COMPLETE]
Mr Frog - Year 3 - [COMPLETE]
Draignean - Year 4 - [COMPLETE]
Sus - Year 5 - [COMPLETE]
Mitchewawa - Year 6 - [COMPLETE]
Paintbrushturkey - Year 7 [COMPLETE]
Splint - Year 8 - [COMPLETE]
Reudh - Year 9 - [COMPLETE]
Tomio175 - Year 10 - [COMPLETE]
Splint - Year 11 - [COMPLETE]
Savero Greenpages <NPC> - Final Year - [COMPLETE]

Dorfing List
This list will be updated as people get thier desired dwarves. Post any specifics, such as gender/profession, and I'll update the list. Otherwise mark unused dwarves as NPCs w/ a random nickname due to so many shared first names.

-Awaiting dwarves
UP TO DATE AND FULFILLED! :D

Casualties
This will be a list of Dorf'd players and overseers killed in battle/due to stupidity. NPC dorfs won't be listed. Who will be our Alius?

Slain beasts/leaders
Anything notable the dwarves fell will be listed here. Titans, FBs, goblin assault team leaders and the like.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We also got our own TV Tropes page from nowhere. Dunno how that happened.

A Tinychat some of us set up for whatever. Conversation may include story stuff, random games, music, or ponies. Basically random as all hell. WARNING: You may come in mid song so you may wanna lower your volume when you join. Just use your bay12 name or something close to it for ease of IDing eachother.

And now a Spearbreakers RTD! Thank Terrahex for that, have a ball getting shot, blown up, eaten by robots and aliens or sucked through a  time portal! And that's if you avoid getting crushed under piles of mugs.

And now an Alternate Reality version.

Our probably grandest project, creating a wiki of all the shit we've created here.

*NOTE: No, there's aren't any vampires. I was expecting horrible levels of underpopulation we've been experiencing, and the Vampires seem to enjoy kill the useful dwarves first. If you wanted them in the game to deal with, you've come to the wrong place; I also fucking hate vampires in general.

Last but not least, my own reaction, as in just 5 years this place became what it will almost certainly always be:

I have realized that, because Mitch and Paintbrush didn't really add much, it only took roughly 4-5 years for this place to become a veritable bedlam house, with doors leading nowhere, impossibly verticle well shafts in the hopital, rooms with no discernable purpose, and the fort itself is trying to literally warp and implode itself with its own utter hatred of sanity out of sheer spite because we're trying to keep this clusterfuck orderly.

When I sit and think about, I can only think "This must've been what ThatAussieGuy felt like when he realized just how fucked up Swordthunders was...." And that feeling is both complete joy and tremendous pride.

I fucking love you guys for this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Disarming
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:23:15 am »
I know. Stupid noob question.

How the fuck do I disarm prisoners!?
The whole dumping thing doesn't work for me no matter what. GOing through stock and unforbidding them doesn't work. HOW DO I DISARM THEM.

notes
1. They are meant to be practice targets. No magma allowed.
2. Drowning takes to long to get at them (Too lazy to set up pumps)
3. SOldiers dying because goblin lasher somehow retained his weapons is beginning to really piss me off.

Pardon my foul language but I'm annyoed becasue ALL of my good soldiers keep dying because of dwarven stpuidity or armed prisoners while the unskilled meatwall lives, compounding the problem.

DF Modding / Need modding assistance
« on: February 19, 2012, 10:53:39 am »
I'm trying to make a few little tweaks and a few added stuff for a planned succesion game. I'm trying to add in a few things without having to go full blown conversion mod. And I need help in the following areas.

Rock warhammers as emergency weapons for a conscript horde
As one of the challenges is a standardized army utilizing pikes, a wooden training pike
Anvil casting from iron and bronze at the smelter. Last test for the dwarves seem to reveal a caravan crew too stupid to bring the anvil I asked for.
Mountain Barbarians - Essentially humans who are belligerent mountain dwellers who siege early and often. Dunno how to make the entity for them, can't seem to wrap my head around it.

Already did basics (removing aquifers and exotics, and making 90-something percent of the giant varieties trainable)

I just need some help with these and time to test them and I'll be good to start it.

I appreciate any and all assistance. Raws from mountain barbarians aren't finished as a heads up.

DF General Discussion / Calling all strong backs, and full beards
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:29:34 pm »
and those seeking something to do with a first time succession game I post in general as I want to gather a few applicants before things begin.

If you're intrested in specifics, PM me, or simply ask, as there are things I've messed with in my own game that will affect te others as well.

Experiment: How long will a uniform army exist until it gets disorganized over time?
Potential epicness: Can we spin the first great epic of the new version this soon? I damn sure hope so!

The game will begin when there are 7 applicants. we have 4 set, and need 3 more. Who shall take the plunge with us!?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Golden Age
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:38:52 am »
I... I never thought, and of all version....

I saw a the world gen into the golden age....
After nothing but hearing of horror from the evil biomes... HOW THE HELL CAN SUCH A THING HAPPEN!? Dwarves not killing elves?
Goblins not being maimed in sieges? BLASPHEMY!!!

Taking all bets to how long it will be before I try to decimate at least one race. I'm gonna dwarf up, and kill anything that loves trees or stands above 5 even that comes to my fortress.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reclaim projects?
« on: January 28, 2012, 11:56:33 am »
While sifting through the wonderful history of DF's Let's Plays, I stumbled upon Swordthunders.
I decided, having been playing for a little over 2 months or so and being able to hold my own in a basic fort (until marksgobs show up anyway) I figure "What the hell? Might as well."

I all i ask, to those who played it before it's abandonment: WHAT IN GODS NAME IS THIS UNHOLY ABOMINATION!?

I was expecting ghosts out the ass. Check.
I was expecting maurading animal people. Check.
I was expecting hidden Cavern Titans. Check.
I wasn't expecting the fucking ocean of discarded ammo, armor, clothing, dead everything
And so much junk laying about I had no idea what the fuck was what. Where the fuck did all this....

I've readied my Dwarves, they are of strong heart, and armed, but I fear the maybe 20 max immigrants I'll get (It seems that this place depopulated all of dwarven kind) will be insufficent.
And you know what. if I can figure out how to cure this FPS death I'm suffering, much fun will be had. i only pray me dorfs die quickly rather than some kind of FB rot or lung cancer or something. It's so boring watching dorfs die of dehydration cause no-one thought to bring them water (or everyone ablebodied died)

So I figured as a gesture of good faith with my Bay 12 entry, I would ask what nightmare reclaim projects are the rest of you guys doing I'm almost positive we've all got or had one; or some of us may even be doing the same ones without knowing it.

Current sitrep

The basic keys, a group of merchants turned reclaimers, stumbled upon the famed ruins of Swordthunders. Having all served at one time or another, they decided to brave this hell to see what riches could be had. The seven grabbed thier weapons when they stopped the wagons and looked about the scene.

Items, munitions, and skeletons were strewn about, a ghostly call emminating from the fortress.
As the brave squad of guardsdwarves approached, a piercing scream was heard, when a great feathery lizard leapt forth from the pool in the front of the fortress!

It was called Ab, and it struck first! It's intended victim however, Urist Kosothsazir, was a veteran of many an ambush and knew how to fight great beasts! He ducked the swing of it's claw and punched it in the side, fracturing it's rib!The beats howled, enraged but was met by a spear tip to the gut and a battleaxe to the chest! More kicks and punches followed from the leader, and the rest of the hardy fighters piled on!

Spear met flesh, axe met bone, and fist crushed scale in the swirling melee! Wether the beast was simply weakened by the sun or sheer, luck, the dwarves had been successful thus far...

"Bring it down! We'll avenge our lost bretheren here comrades!" Urist shouted over grunts, screeches, and the sounds of tearing flesh! "WHY! WONT! YOU! DIE!" Rad Tadadil, one of two former miners of the group, bellowed as he dug into not earth, but beast flesh with his pick axe, and with a mighty roar, he smashed it into the beast's eye, tearing it asunder! one of the two speardwarves, both taken by sheer fury, stabbed and bashed as rapidly as thier frames would allow, many nearly felling the beast with a near fatal stab to the head knocking the great beast to it's back, before a bash to the face fractured it's skull.

And yet, it fought on.

Will my dorfs defeat Ab and Swordthunder's other horrors? Thus far it might be yes, at least with Ab since the worst injury so far is a speardorf with a brusied shin and Ab only got in three attacks under the hail of axes, picks, spears, and fists. Good thing he had pants on or his leg probably would have melted off. But seriously, a miner gouged it's eye out, it's spine is fractured in three places, all the ribs on one side are broken, it's skull is broken in several spots from spear shafts to the head, and it's short a lung. How much can this fucking thing take?

Now then, What have the rest of you done, are doing, or planning to recalim?
And pardon my poor story telling. Not a great writer but I wanted to add a little entertainment to this.

Scratch that, now it's got two damaged lungs and another skull fracture and a shattered leg.

EDIT: SUCCESS! Ab is dead! Cause of death was suffocation from one axe wrecked lung and a spear punctured other lung. The absolute worst injuries were a bruised lung and heart. No dead dwarves. The kill was awarded to Ingish Aludzuglar, Speardorf/woodcutter. Also the one who was hit most often with multiple bruises and likely spared from horrible FB rot thanks to some leather pants. For his efforts, they have he has become Indafatigably mighty, slow to tire, and quick to heal.

An FB composed of water attacked, and the expidition leader promply severed it's head with one punch.
