When it's done, I imagine. I know there's elves involved who will probably get all upset over the logging that's likely happened eventually.

What civilization would those goblins happen to be from? I'm obviously not on the up and up on who is who civ-wise. Because while not as good as my original idea, I'll need a name for what I plan to reconcile the conflicting design of the helmet I'd prefer to depict Hauben with.

I'll be 100% up front, I haven't tried to read the entire thing. Threads that get past a certain point I seldom get involved in because there's a ton of back-tracking to do, especially in ones that are poorly organized (Spearbreakers was a very, very harsh teacher in terms of control and organization, which is why I seldom ever get involved in things.) This is unfortunately one of those threads where going back through everything feels like a rather daunting prospect due to poor organization, and I hope I cause no offense in saying that.  :-\

As far as aesthetics, comparisons to the real world and so on, I feel like this'd escalate into an argument very, very quickly because this is a serious case of two opposing views and mental images on Dwarf Fortress itself, and that's not going to easily reconcile. Also your insistence about copper is coming off more as choosing to make use of it over other metals. The gameplay side of me is what's screeching about not doing everything within one's power to get equipment made of better materials if for no other reason than it not falling apart in two or three serious engagements. It also makes it sound like you have garbage craftsmen and lousy brokers who are too inept to secure anything better.

Copper is just something I've come to associate with a militia operating on the material equivalent of a shoestring budget or training up new metalworkers, not with wealth, and having anyone do so just sounds wrong because of how much of a stopgap material it comes off as.

Also, as a little fun thing, I noticed something about the last helmets shown so far. They felt like a look I had seen somewhere before and then it hit me.

They share a very similar profile the the Halo 2 Anniversary marine helmets, enough that they look like an extremely primitive version of them, at least to me, assuming they maintain that gradual slope to a tapered brim.

EDIT: An apology is due alongside this because I sat here for a good 30 minutes constantly having to backtrack and pare this down so it wasn't some long-winded tirade about materials and so forth.

My "loyalty to history" in this case stopped at color pallet and the design. I have a preference for the Sallet-bevor combo and light gray, and honestly it's a look that I don't think would look near as good in tan (that is, copper or bronze. I don't think it'd look good in light blue either. :P) I consider it to be a style of helmet that looks cool and doesn't need any flashy embellishments, but it does need to be made from iron or steel to really shine and not look wonky (to my own tender A E S T H E T I C sensibilities anyway.) It just so happens it's also a helmet design that happens to work with Hauben's, since the back allows room for his hair.

But then, I'm a boring person who knows what he likes for armor aesthetics, and that's primarily based in real world designs, especially since you can only do so much before designs start looking garish and silly/out of place or too utilitarian and boring. Plus, I'd like to draw something pertaining to the thread, but what I've seen for helmets just don't look good to me personally.

Spoiler: A long winded tangent (click to show/hide)

Strictly speaking though Cathar, you're within the right to tell me to get fucked and call me wrong in absolutely every single area since this is your show. :P

EDIT: Edited for grammer, but on a third viewing I love just how calm and matter-of-fact that long-nosed dude sounds in my head in the previous action-y tinged update that showed that battle with the elves. "Do not surrender, we're not taking prisoners."

It's a sentiment I fully request we embrace should raiders inevitably come.

EDIT II: I do however now have a ridiculous idea for a rough sketchy comic thing. Who is the armorer?

Corinthians are really good ones, but definitely more what I'd imagine bronze helmets to look like, and copper ones looking like the Coolus or Boar-Tusk helmets in shape, though I really dunno why. Just feels appropriate I guess for copper helmets to be much simpler and basic looking since in DF unless you're seriously short on luck or going for a challenge of some sort, I figure most players treat copper armor as throw-away gear to be ditched/melted as soon as better gear is available.

EDIT: Hell, it could be that in most DF worlds, fielding primarily copper gear is considered a sign of extreme poverty in a settlement because it can't afford to field literally anything better.

Also congrats Cathar, you got a bunch of nerds to have a discussion about armor in your thread.

Well what I mean is when is the last time you saw a sallet made of bronze or copper? I dunno if it'd look as good in tan/brown vs light grey, hence my wondering what we'd have locally available. Since having played a metal-less embark (literally has nothing but adamantine in Battlejudge, for ore which was absolutely horrible to me at the outset, but have since learned to live with,) I can say it's way easier to be able to source locally than have to wait for caravans.

The specific one is this kind. I'm quite fond of face concealing gear (partially because I'm absolutely dreadful at drawing dudes' faces, but mostly because they tend to look cooler than open-face ones.) This one in particular is even open enough in the back for that mass of floof Hauben has in the back, but is still good and protective.

Although in truth I've just found myself gravitating to this particular style of helmet in general and have yet to figure out why.

Also I should point out if dwarves come to trade there's absolutely nothing stopping the locals from working steel, it just can't be produced locally (which I generally chalk up to dwarves being unwilling to share the specifics on the recipe, both in terms of heat and materials.) And I figure having a militia packing steel gear would be a real testament to how wealthy the place is down the line, that they can afford such an extravagance compared to virtually any other human settlement.

Hell yeah, saw most of the pictures on dA first. Good to see the update.

Also, a nitpick on it, it's "Banditry" not "Banditism."  :P

EDIT: I'm hoping there's some iron on site somewhere that can be accessed, or that the dwarves have been modded slightly to come to trade in Autumn. What I intend to draw may not make sense with copper or bronze.

And I have more as well! Finished mores!

Well, okay. And a warlock portrait WIP

Leon Vetten the human Fighter's portrait. The party's been rather insistent that when he gets consistent good rolls, he has a smokey, blue "Slayer Eye" going on.

Level 1 Thug DJ standing guard at his now-dead boss-lady's door.

I'd just like to say the only garden gnome looking thing to them really is the hats some of them have. The rest look decidedly dwarfy rather than gnomey, at least in my opinion on another look. Also, my vote's for the gold-trimmed version. The solid gold armored weapon masters look a bit obnoxious, assuming you're still fishing for opinions.

So, I have a little project in mind. This'll play nice with mods, yeah? Because ZM5 made a darkest dungeon mod that's gonna feature pretty heavily in it.

655
Righto lads and lasses, got an update to this mod for you.

VERSION TWO NOW UP

v2, dubbed by me as the "Emergency Arsenal" update, is aimed squarely at some uncovered materials for bulk construction materials, as well as expanding options for zerg rushes and ammo production in the absence of quality smiths or lacking metallic resources, and allowing for making bulk loads of clothing. In theory, these should all be found in the vanilla workshops unless indicated here.

- Added new reactions that allow for crafting beds from ceramics, glass, metal, and stone plus some cloth at the respective workshops. [METALSMITH FORGE, KILN, GLASS FURNACE, MASON WORKSHOP]
-- Metal beds can be made from Aluminum, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, and Adamantine.
- Added bulk blockmaking for cermaics and all types of glass. Bulk block reactions require two additional units of fuel, but I have no idea how to work around this for powered furnaces. [KILN, GLASS FURNACE]
- Sawmill can now mass produce menacing spikes and shields in batches of 10 and 6 respectively. [SAWMILL]
- Woodcrafters can now craft wooden spears and maces in batches of 10 and 6 respectively from single logs. [CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP]
- Stonecrafters can now craft stone maces and war hammers in batches of 6 from a single boulder and log, as well as make obsidian bolts from one obsidian boulder and one log in batches of 30. [CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP]
- Leatherworkers can now make basic clothing sets from 3 pieces of leather (shirt, trousers, shoes.) [LEATHER WORKS]
- Leatherworkers can now make very basic leather armor from 3 pieces of leather (3 helms, 3 armor.) [LEATHER WORKS]
- Clothiers can now make a basic set of clothing from three bolts of cloth. [CLOTHIER]
- Glassmakers can produce glass-tipped ammo in each glass type from the usual materials and a log. [GLASS FURNACE]

If there's demand for it, I'll add additional bed reactions for the smith, but right now it's limited to the one stupidly common metal, and the most valuable non-alloys. There'll also be an updated patch added later for ZM's packs.

The main purpose of the weapon and armor reactions is for rapidly equipping a force on a budget. A well made stone club or wooden spear and a leather cuirass and helmet are better than no weapon or  armor at all.

Special thanks to Hugo The Dwarf for helping with the sand reactions and doing some spot-testing, and ZM5 for being the guinea pig for this.

I'd be partial to a macedwarf, but whatever is needed is fine too.

"I have good faith in our chances to survive!" - And then someone falls in the river and drowns and a tree falls on somebody and kills them, driving the rest insane via dead body and dead friend grief, with the drowner causing rotten friend grief as well.

Don't suppose there's a hint as to what our primary weapon and armor metal on site is, is there? I'd just like to know because I'd like to make an armored depiction of my guy (even if for all I know buzzards will drive him insane with constant "joined an existing conflict" thoughts or he might fall in the river and drown a week in.)
