((Just because it doesn't have a handle doesn't mean it doesn't have a lock!))
Ith freezes, and tenses up.
"Did you hear that?"
He tries to locate the noise but to no avail.
"... It seemed far away, at least. We should be safe for now..."
He notices what Ralu was looking at.
"We'll need a screwdriver for that. Hang on, didn't that other flower-person have a screwdriver? I'll be right back."
Ask Indigo for the screwdriver. When she doesn't respond, take it.
"Flower-person, me and the other flower need your screwdriver. Care to give it to us?"

He said it wasn't locked. Hurr hurr Open da door!

(Do I really need to dictate every single action to you?)

It's a good story. Please continue, I'll read eagerly.

I'm just frustrated. No battles since 9th of February. Even participating in the tournament was a narrow decision. Not sure that we'll ever get a chance to distinguish ourself in a non-building way, not because of your story-telling or lack of story hooks in that direction, but lack of player interest in seizing those hooks.

I might need to step back for a while. Producing more heat than light.

One way or another it will happen. Even if we are forced into it. the way I look at it, whoever attacks us (because god help us if we even think about instigating or going out and doing something) will get massacred. Kinda same boat. Call me bloodthirsty. Even if we lose some dudes, that's life, right?

Thanks for the help. I was getting worried there. Now lets see...
Looks at reactor, tries to fix it, etc.

"Maybe we should get the experienced engineer in here to do that, huh?" Just a thought."

Not that you'd know enough about chivalry to understand.

Don't get personal, please. That makes me unhappy.

Meh. I'm always going to be outvoted by people who don't want to be in feudal times, anyway.

Plus, it's the observable truth that he never actually has any sources or examples, just what "modern militaries" do. Should I say he's an expert at what he never has discussed cogently?

Simmer, dude. This is a game on the internet, not some debate class. That kind of talk should quit now.

I am unfortunately materially unable to do extensive research as of now.
On the message you're quoting, I was against "going out and hunt them down", and my proposition wasn't exclusive. I never said we shouldnt do anything else, and I dont remember anyone explicitly bringing up fortifying. What I read was an argument between going all leeroy jenkins and not doing that. In one of my earlier posts I also said I was agreeing to scouting out, but you immediatly used the image of our scouts running back with an army behind them as a counter argument.
And after that your arguments shrunk down to I-wanna-be-a-MANLY MAN level. Sorry, but some of us prefer long term building to heroic death on the battlefield (which wont be remembered).

I suggested preparations regardless of the outcome of our permission. Either way we should be fortifying like a boss. (We are already building a tower, if we can find enough work what would we do?)

New idea. What if, in the future, we set up roadside checkpoints. Start it as a wooden (possibly brick or stone) building, or tower, along roads, to protect merchants and keep the roads clear of highwaymen and the like. We will need to ask permission for this. Not a suggestion for now at this point.

You assume we can outrun them. However, if they are indeed more than bandits, and heading for our town, it's highly likely it's the Count. The very same Count who specializes in Cavalerie forces, and has no reason to love us. If he kills us at that moment using his overpowering forces and mobility, and then blames the thing on us, not many'll care. Dead men speak no tales, so he owns the truth.

Hybrid. Scout out the attacks using our rangers and send off a letter to the duke letting him know of our predicament as well as asking for permission to engage (This does not mean that we will, it just gives us permission). We may also want to pick the Rat's brain.

Subdue and pry information from them.

"Here hand me that. Lander, could you tie up that one too... There.

So. I'm Shia and this, is my ship now. Why don't you introduce yourselves and tell us what is worth lifting and where it is located before I place you in the airlock and open it just enough for you to feel your cells begin to freeze and pop. Just a suggestion."

I'll just bump this right up here.

Hi guys,

Is anyone running the Mac V 2.f? I could run V.2c fine on my machine (I could just double-click the program and it'd start), but I cannot figure out how to get the latest version to run. Running Dwarf Fortress.exe just opens up a text file. I'm on OSX 10.5, if that makes a difference.

I have a mac as well. Have't tried this version. We were working on trying to figure out mac stuff for the last version. Possibly help there?

Notify the duke before marching. Send a courier as you prepare for the ride and call to arms. Get his word. One of two things will happen.

Yes, enter his land and fight the ruffians. He does not need to be notified because you have my say. Go. Ride. Attack. The whole ordeal will trounce his fame (considering he can't protect his own lands and requires a thown leader to pick up after him.) and also show our loyalty to the state.

No, do not attack. This is not part of your business and you will do well to stay out of it. Perpare your army in defence your lands, whatever is climbing the river is coming your way. Might as well meet it with some hard force.

Wow! Bump.

our (standing) military needs to grow in proportion to our population. we already have a fair portion of our town population as professional soldiers. If we want to increase our military potency we could look into a levy system, untrained conscripts in a time of great need.

want a bigger standing military? invest in our town make it grow, make it prosper.

I suggest training and profiteering. If our country is anything like Europes at the time wars for profit and sport were super common. Let's ask our duke where it would be profitable to send a party of our rangers, mounted archers, and halberdiers (not all of them!), to raid and bring back some sweet stuff. as well as get trained. I also say we resolve to bring Alan off of the bullshit garrison duty and let him tour with this party, eventually coming to lead them. Also give him our old brigandine armor and short sword, he should have his own shield.

I think we should send our rangers to track potential enemy movement and dig up clues in the wilderness.

Thisn.
