Because fiat it's more an omnipresent field of weakening powers and stuff than specifically targeting magic.

The plain - what seems to be an endless rocky expanse - has a faint trail of smoke rising off of one horizon. As Jason heads toward it, he'd sense the magic dampening effect double every 5 kilometers.

SCREWIT

Everyone who was going on the quest is teleported. Teleported to what appears to be a flat plan stretching endlessly into the distance. People with magic will note a slight weakening of their abilities. It doesn't impair function yet, but it's noticeable.
