I've been watching LOTR again in the context of it being a(n odd) D&D campaign and I figured out why Gandalf told everyone to leave. It was so he could get all the XP from killing the Balrog solo! Then he had some sort of auto ressurect item activate, grabs sweet loot, levels up a billion times from defeating a Balrog solo, and there you have Gandalf the White.
Sly bastard.
