General Discussion / Re: Goblins: Mr. Thunt, I don't feel so good

Huh, seems Forgath's gonna be brought back as a Klik, if I'm getting my prediction machine right. Also, guessing it now, his negative will be water. Just because of how Idle's tear was what really started off the ... process.

Just you wait until you get to the end of book 2 and run into The Best Character.

You'll know what I mean.

So I ran across a webcomic I really, really like recently, and I can't find anywhere that seems to be talking about it, so I'm taking it upon myself to spread the word.

Problem Child is the story of Amber and Sandra Bailey, a daughter and mother living in a fictional town called LeTrompé in Vermont. Sandra is, to put it mildly, not a good parent in the slightest - she's actually crass, abrasive, manipulative, and horribly abusive, as well as being a massive alcoholic. Amber deals with this as best she can, which since she's 14, isn't very well, typically by venting about her problems to anyone who'll listen and writing haikus. The plot is fairly complex and features a whole host of characters, each of which is distinct and well-developed, so I won't give spoilers - thematically speaking it's mostly about dealing with one's problems and shitty behaviour with the help of the people around you, while also helping them with the same thing.

Do be warned, this comic features adult content - while sex/full nudity aren't explicitly shown onscreen (to my recollection), there is more than a little of it happening, as there are characters dating and such. Also a lot of fairly realistic (or at least seriously played) depictions of alcohol abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, etc, if you find that sort of thing disturbing. So, uh, be aware of that, this comic ain't for kids.

So if you like complex narratives focusing on interpersonal development and interaction, dealing with past traumas, and trying to become a better person, then Problem Child may be for you.

Oh, and did I mention it updates every two days, CONSISTENTLY? Because it does.

Oh, and also this thread's inevitably gonna have spoilers for the comic so you should probably make sure to read it before perusing this if you care about that kind of thing

My me, another demon quest! Don't mind if I watch.

Admittedly, it was nice to see the title pop up again, even if not for an update.

Yeah, I should probably leave more in, and see how the overall feel of the story goes.

There's a discord, but it's not primarily for discussing the novel. it's PW's discord channel, for ... well, for us degenerates to hang out and be degenerate.
I don't currently have permissions to link an invite, but I can probably get one pretty quick.
Well, it depends I think. Like on mission ... 12 or something, when we had to defend Hephaestus against the forces of the UWM and everyone got split up into 4 or 5-person squads but there were still well over 30 people participating at once (and probably multiple people doing secret actions - I know at the very least that I made my secret backup clone during the mission that I later used during the epilogue to become the enigmatic plague on sapient society that I eventually became), so some of the more extraneous stuff during missions like those could likely be cut or just happen offscreen, in order to form a more cohesive portrayal of events.

Ah, I see. That'd be up to the people in the discord itself, I think - I was fairly active in ER, but I haven't really substantially played in any other PW games save for Infinite Heavens post-epilogue. If they wanna let me in on that merit, then that'd be good, but if not, no biggie either. Mayhaps float the question to them, if that's alright? Can't promise that I'd be active in the actual chat ... at all, but eh. Mayhaps.

...there's a discord?

Probably the wrong thing to catch in that reply.

As far as editing the overly-wacky actions and whatnot, I'd say that going that route with a lot of the on-ship stuff could safely be done, and random RP actions that never actually got run by piecewise, but actual processed actions in the game itself should probably be let in, at least so long as they weren't completely mission-irrelevant.

Hmm, this actually looks kinda interesting! I'll keep an eye on this thread, I think.

One suggestion, if I may - perhaps consider giving each of the lesser demon types a different dominant color? As it is, while they are different, at a glance they all look pretty similar as far as shape and color go, so it'd probably make it easier to distinguish and remember them if the wrath demon was red, pride demon was deep purple, sloth is green or something, etc. Just a suggestion, obviously, this doesn't seem like it's going to be a fast-paced game or anything but visual distinctiveness is still a fairly important aspect of things regardless.

...yes. I never mixed those names up before, especially during important missions when it was probably a good idea to know people's names.

w

whaaaaa

interest happen

I feel like if you're going to have any one character as the person we follow for most of the novel then Milno's probably the best option for that, he was pretty much the longest-serving PC, one of the only ones (or maybe the only one) to ever get to 10 missions completed, and had more of a character arc than most, one that ended up involving the Armory Master at that. Plus his dry snark and practicality make for a good fit with the wacky yet bleak tone of the ER-verse.

Though perhaps a good way to structure it would be having each mission follow one or more viewpoints depending on how many teams the participants were split up into, but focusing on the most influential character for each mission - ie perhaps Faith for the first mission since she did that bodysurfing thing, someone else for the next one, etc etc.

Once again, I'm not talking about the story part of it, I am talking about the conscious structural framing of the past two pages, from an artistic standpoint.

Something about the panels itself is what feel "off", and I'm not even sure what it is that makes me feel that way, it like the buildup is drawn out in a weird way and the payoff resolves one panel too quickly.  I can't explain any more clearly because I'm not sure what elements of the two pages are even throwing me a curveball.
Mayhaps it's the way the background is discarded as Alice and Cio look at each other? It makes them more emphasized on the page, but it also looks a bit strange when I acknowledge it.
