Seriously, picture the consequences of the Thing actually gaining a powerbase in the galaxy. Each faction would probably be infiltrated, and no one would be able to trust anyone, for they may not be who they say they are. Worlds are lost daily, and when it gets ahold of pskers it gets even worse.
In other words, a normal day in 40k!

That would indeed be bad. The whole recruiting Chapter and planet might get wiped out by the Inquisition in a situation like that, either because they were infested or simply because they might be.
And then they'd have to deal with whatever got off planet as well, and the escapees would be virtually impossible to find.
A lot of recruiting is done on primitive and dangerous worlds, with no spaceflight other than what the Marines provide. Not saying it's impossible, but this situation could potentially be contained with only one planet destroyed.
Yep. Still, if one escaped, the universe would be just a little more grimdark.
