Quickly, break his brain. Gotta do this quickly.

Oh, the trope of the magical world being concealed from humanity, present in the Dresden Files, Harry Potter, etc. It's often ridiculed because it's kinda inevitable that a magical subculture would eventually be discovered, but in the case of the Yog-Sothothery it's that the claims of those who do find out are too ridiculous/horrifying to be believed.

The oft-reviled Masquerade actually makes sense in Lovecraft because no one wants to acknowledge that the brain-melting horrors exist lest they attract attention.

What about combining all three?

"Xan takes the suckerpunch to the crotch heavily, but his hardness has both fortitude and brickness!"

Pretty much. It's not an issue of the cops suddenly becoming corrupt where they weren't before, it's just that the corruption that was there the whole time's coming to light.

The cops screwing with stuff and being incredibly corrupt isn't really new news, sadly, but the reason I'm so worried about the corruption also spreading to lawyers is that it will make it all that harder to contain. Even at the moment it seems to be practically impossible to deal with.
From hearing Truean talk it isn't a matter of spreading.

I think I wasn't restricted as much because I got infamous for incredibly deadly incompetence while Auron got infamous for being crazy about looting and being really good at it.

Why I'm sure that with the outstanding reputation of police in today's media no abuse would ever occur!

Oh wait.

It's a law project that is supposed to help protect the population from terrorists. One of the main complaint about it is that it defines terrorism in such a broad way that pretty much anything could be could be considered as terrorism. Some are afraid Harper will use it against rioters and environmentalists. Honestly, I wouldn't be much surprised to see him do it, considering his tendency of abusing loopholes and being a dictator wannabe in general. I agree that it is depressing.
Ah, so it's the Canadian version of the Patriot Act?
Dangit.

Well, brain backups are already possible, right? And this should still be more fun than just placing a "saved state" behind on the Sword - you're taking your ticket to resurrectionland with you to the warzone!

But mostly I'm wondering why "active" distribution is possible and readily available, while "passive" (which, it appears, should be easier to accomplish) might end up unavailable or at least even more expensive than "active". Metagame reasons notwithstanding, of course - purely from in-universe POV.
I think I'm the only example of brain backups so far, and those have had unspecified consequences I'm about to find out.

"I'll find out at some point."

Xan stands stock-still and twitches a bit before asking where the Doctor is, in that case. Upon being informed he's on Haephestus (just saving time here), he seemingly becomes agitated, rapidly breathing, his hands tightening into fists, teeth grinding, and other similar reactions. He paces back and forth for a minute or two to defuse, then turns to the nurse again.

"Could you or your colleagues give me a scan, please? I was a patient of the Doctor's, as you can no doubt discern, and I'd like to see if any trace of his work remains. I believe this is a new body I am wearing, so the brain would be the primary target."

Ask to get scanned.

((Basically just an IC way to discover the degeneration and then send some questions to ol' Doccy about it. Then I can actually start doing things.))
