Garrus' romance is actually a bit better about that since the option is really in-your-face which one leads to romance and it's pretty easy to avoid it if you want, especially since it's pretty much entirely Shepard's idea for it.

The way I've observed it Spiral Energy is kinda like an Ork Waaagh! in that it's powered by conflict against an outside force, and only escalates the larger the threat is. It is willpower and bonds with the rest of humanity... which I'm interpreting as rampant hate for anything not human and a desire to conquer the universe for humanity. Basically an Imperium of Man standpoint from 40k writ over here.But... the anti-spirals ended up being proven to be stupid.
