DF Gameplay Questions / Clothing Male Dwarves and Female Dwarves

I'm old fashion... is there any way to easily make sure all males where a shirt and all females where a dress?  It's annoying when I see my male dwarves wearing a dress.

Why would chopping down a tree end up killing the dwarf doing the chopping??  This makes zero sense... I guess the developer believes he could make the same mistake in real life.    So what's the safe way of chopping down a tree if there's falling logs which can kill you?

UPDATE:  I see inside the dwarf fortress wiki  -how it happened-  , but it's still illogical since the person cutting down the tree can choose the direction it falls due to the angel of his cutting.

DF Gameplay Questions / Game Crashing during Years of World Creation

This might be an easy problem to fix since the scenario seems pretty simple:
    When playing the game it only crashes when years are passing on World Creation  IF  I have copied a set of 'design advanced parameters'  .  So the game never crashes if I use the default LARGE REGION, but if I copy this set of parameters and rename to A LRG REGION then save without making any internal setting changes then try using this custom set the game will crash.  At first I thought it was some setting I adjusted, but after dozens of tests I have recognized it happens for any set of parameters which I have copied.  Sometimes the game will reach 150 years without crashing, but it's rare.
    Anyone familiar with this mystery crash?

UPDATE:  What I found has worked is giving the copied parameters a title and name...  the  t   and  n   options.   After having done this it's working.... very strange.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Auto-Save Timer

Is there a tool or adjustment which will auto-save my game every hour?  Currently I have it setup to save every season and usually the game doesn't crash.... but when it does happen I have lost hours worth of time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Better Quality Praying?

My dwarves seem to spend LOTS of time praying at the temple.  The wiki doesn't mention anything other than having a coffer with music instruments, plenty of space and maybe adding some performers. I have those already. My carpenter spent 7days praying and with different types of praying (such as meditation) before finally stopping.  Besides building custom temples for each deity is there any way to speed the process of praying?

DF Gameplay Questions / Color type when praying to a Deity?

I see several of my dwarves praying to their deity, but some are colored green while others are colored purple with an exclamation mark.  What's the difference between them ?

Masterwork DF / Weapons to match our legends of creatures/monsters

Does this mod have any weapons do extra damage against specific types of creatures?   Such as sharp or pointed wooden weapons doing extreme damage against vampires to match a wooden stake thru the heart OR silver against were-type creatures to also match the legends in our history.  If this doesn't exist would this be something which could be added?

I've recognized the clothing workshop and leather workshop don't allow making Tunics and Shirts.  I only see the option for making a dress for the under category of upper body.  Anyone know of a method for having more types of clothing options for male dwarves on the under category of upper body??      Thanks in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / RAIN Problem

In my current game it's raining all the time... nonstop raining.  I found how to turn off the rain in the D_INIT file and turn off the rain in PyLNP settings, but is there any way to adjust the frequency of the rain so it's less often?  The game started feeling depressing hearing rain constantly nonstop... and I live in the dessert where in real life it rarely rains. 

                                           Any advice would be great

DF Gameplay Questions / Training Children

I could not find any topics about training children which were not at least 2 years old, so I created this topic since those old topics might have incorrect information.  Not sure why teenage dwarves are not allowed to be 'students' learning skills, especially in a world where violent monsters and civilizations attack to kill!!  I am sure JRR Tolkien would also agree that younger dwarves would not be lazy the first 18years.

Anyways, the wiki where it mentions removing the -child- tag as an option, but do any other methods or tricks exist so we don't have these lazy dwarves for 12 years!???

What MODS can I safely add to the PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack 0.44.12-r02 without risking an unstable game?     I would like to include Fortress Defense Mod II, but it looks like it hasn't been updated since January so I don't know if this would be safe.   Any mod recommendations for increasing the fantasy(dragons, magic, siege attacks, ogres, etc.,) details?

Besides what is mentioned in the dwarf fortress wiki...  are there any tools so I can quickly change the gear my companions are wearing with new gear I'm finding?   A bowman in my group placed his bronze boot inside the quiver and he is obviously too stupid to equip the boot himself.

I have recently returned to this game, but remember a problem where any enemy would instantly be killed if a boulder, ceiling or roof landed on top of the enemy.  In cases where it’s a titan, dragon or other huge enemy the enemy should survive.  Is there any way to change this function where it only does X amount of damage instead of killing instantly?

Also have battles been improved where invaders sometimes attack the fort walls?  Ideally if we have forts than our enemies should attack with siege weapons like catapults, ballistas, battering rams, trebuchets, etc, etc, .

I think everyone here would be happy with more gamers playing dwarf fortress since it increases revenue for the two creators as well as increasing mods for the game. I see many features and game depth which dwarf fortress provides which simply don't exist within other games or is simply done better by dwarf fortress. With such a great game I began checking with other gamers why this game wasn't being played as compared to other games such as minecraft, civilization, etc., etc., .  These other games have a massive following yet weaker game depth.

The vast majority of gamers informed me they simply found the graphics as too weak, even importing the modded graphic packages wasn't enough to keep them playing long enough to discover the beauty inside the game itself. The game doesn't need fancy graphics... basic 2D would work just enough where the visual allows the imagination to understand what's coming upon the first time a gamer sees it.

Dwarf fortress easily has greater game depth than minecraft... I'm just wondering when will dwarf fortress become more visually appealing in order to lure the massive number of gamers in the world, thus doubling or tripling the size of donations to the game each month. The game will also receive more praise and recognition by the gaming community as popularity grows.

I realize updating the graphics inside the game would be a HUGE project, but based on the benefits afterwards it feels like the right path. I like playing dwarf fortress now... just mentioning what I found holding back the game on popularity.
