DF Gameplay Questions / Returning after 18months - need advice

I've been away 18months and need advice on where to start again... seems my favorite newb_rollup_pack and graphics package both have ended its life. Anyways here's my list of questions, thanks for those who know the answers:

1) What's the current best set of tools and graphic package for playing the game again?
2) Are monsters finally able to attack walls?  Are goblins finally able to attack walls and gates?
3) What's the most current tutorial for the game which is a good tutorial and not just some fella who just plays the game? I know the sticky has tutorial links, but those are ancient ancient old... not sure why a new set hasn't replaced them.

Apparently boiling extract causes a dwarf to bleed to death... even when there's no wounds or blood being left by the dwarf.  The only symptom showing on their health when viewing the 3 dwarves (when they were alive) was that a diagnosis was required.  They couldn't even walk 60 steps before falling dead.

It doesn't seem right for a dwarf to die to death from bleeding when there was no bleeding.    :(

I haven't heard much discussion regarding if the change in how much stones weigh has changed the value of stone weapon traps or catapults.  Previously stone weapon traps and catapults were ignored because they were basically ineffective/worthless.  I'm asking because I'm still playing 34.07 and waiting to upgrade while a few game kinks/bugs are fixed.

Have you experienced anything which makes stone weapon traps worthwhile when using heavy stones?

I found this on the battlefield and uncertain what would have caused this to happen.  If there's a method of reproducing this on skeletons we'll have a way to naturally remove them instead of them sticking around.

DF Gameplay Questions / Closed Bridges Burn Down

I always thought closed bridges were the same as walls, however a magical dragon taught me they burn into ashes from fire breathing.  I also learned fire breathing is only 1z level... poor dragon can't bend his neck to breathe fire at my marksdwarves only 1z level higher.

DF Gameplay Questions / Concern of Human Ghosts

A human soldier died from some goblins and his body was moved to the refuse stockpile instead of an available coffin.  I tried to engrave a memorial slab for him yet can't find his name(searched both first and last name).  Other dead dwarves are being properly sent to the coffins.  His corpse remains in the refuse stockpile... will I have to worry about a human ghost in the future?

Well I might have broken the merchants at my Depot where they refuse to leave. When the merchants farewell message appeared I returned to the game and quickly hit the pause key then thought I was lucky to still be able to trade.... so I did some more trading.  Now an entire month has passed and they're still not leaving. 

*Nothing blocking their path... no gates... or trees...  green path all the way.

Has anyone had this happen to them?   Will I need to kill them?

So my theory is this is a gigantic "bird" which is very thin and has deadly gas?   Or does bunting and emaciated mean something different?

Are these used in dwarf fortress??  Anything special required for using them?   

The wiki is very vague only saying some tools can be used by your dwarves in Fortress mode... yet never telling you which ones.

So I created some pen pastures a good distance from my fort which have animals surrounded by fortifications, roof and open pits thus only the elite goblin archer types would be able to attack and waste their ammo on them.  I have some animal questions:
A}  Do some animals have better vision than other animals?
B}  What animals have the best ability to dodge ranged attacks?
C}  Would the larger size animals be better to use since they can take more damage?

Normally when assigning a war dog you use v(view) then press p and then press e for assigning work animals.  However, when a mother is holding her baby you can't use the v(view) key because it only shows the stupid baby(who has no options)!  Why on earth it 'always' shows the baby instead of the obviously more important adult is frustrating.  Anyways I see no method for assigning them war dogs... any ideas??

This fella has four names and one of them is tremendously long.   Is there some dwarf dictionary where we can decipher names like the one below or does the game just jumble letters together when creating names?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Soldier has gone AWOL

So my first and best Marksdwarf has gone awol... and returned to performing regular citizen tasks.  The rest of his team awaits his return at the barracks.  He is the militia commander, his squad is active/training, his happiness is 74(fine), his squads schedule is configured for always training, his squad is assigned to a barracks... but he won't return to the military. 

Any ideas?
