DF Gameplay Questions / Chop the trees down!
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:03:00 pm »
Okay, my woodcutter and a number of other dwarves have wood cutting enabled. They have 3 axes. They have access to underground wood. I am -positive- they can reach it. No matter what I do, they won't cut down the wood. They do everything but that. I even tried enlisting my woodcutter in the military and equipping him with the axe, so he went to combat training. I unenlisted him and he put the axe back in storage. No burrows are involved.

What am I doing wrong?

Is alcohol the only thing that can quench thirst?

I remember a month ago when I first started that my dwarves would always die of thirst. I never knew how to make a drinking zone or a bucket at the time, so 1/4th of them died before I succumbed to an invasion. Now that I know how to make zones for drinking/garbage, is there any other tradeoff for drinking water to quench thirst? Would they be able to live on? I don't care if they work slower because I literally have 400 dwarves helping everybody do jobs.

They get grouchy and slow, and I think get bad thoughts ultimately without booze. However, you need a source of water for wounded, hospitalized dwarves. I've had fortresses where there was only water available for a long while, and things moved at a crawl. Trying to brew up enough booze to catch up with the backlog was a huge bitch.

I might just try that. I've been looking to up my difficulty with aquifers and treeless areas, and possibly in freezing climates where I have to dig for water.

Thanks bunches!

Well, the wiki was kind of so-so about whether the tactic would work, so I was directed to this tactic. The legend helps a ton, thanks!

If you happen to have answers to the other questions, that would be awesome, but you've already helped me loads.

DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifers: How do they work?
« on: February 10, 2012, 01:03:01 am »
I've been reading up on aquifers, and I am really dedicated to learning how to work around this problem, since they are so prevalent in areas I want to embark on.

I have looked over this several times, but the tileset isn't the original tileset and I am very confused as to what is what, especially the weird structures running along diagonal lines.

I realize I'm probably just daft, I sort of understand the instructions, but not having a visual aid makes it tricky.

Also, as a side question, do dwarves still freeze outside in freezing weather? Will they burn in scorching weather? And does anyone have any advice on embarking in an area with no trees? I can't see how it would be possible.

Thanks!

All this complex talk aside, would glass spikes get annihilated by explosive mobs? (I know it is magma safe.) I don't have sand in my area, but I buy bags of it constantly. I was using it to make 1 step process trap components, and I could just switch over to only spikes, instead of discs and spiked balls.

Also, the wiki on traps nor the weapon section doesn't break down how good glass is for trap components over or below various metals and wood.

I guess I should buy some obsidian stone, as well. Just in case.

Edit: Also, if the hallway they walk down is made of non-magma safe stone, will that melt on explosions?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, I am currently setting my dwarves on active/training civ mode so they train their skills. I have been getting regular goblin raids, which is weird since I killed their master, (overlord guy,) and I'm not even sure how they are organizing the raids. I suffer minimal casualties, but since I can't find a good underground grazing area, my animal population is down to almost nothing. I like to keep it around in case food stores run thin, (I have about 3k roasts atm, and birds laying eggs regularly.)

The bug where you need to remove jugs from the stockpile to extract honey from honeycombs also still seems to be in place, I thought this was fixed. It's a bit of a pain. I like to keep mead in stock.

Sorry for asking so many random questions, they have been building up for a long time. I have been progressing through trying different things. I still haven't played with pressure plates, levers, or megastructures, (I can't find a reason to build the last one.)

Is there a way to tell which ore will be available in an embark area? I'd like to try out a fortress with iron and flux stone. Making steel sounds like a lot of fun. It's pointless for me now because I have to buy all the components, and I have better materials. Two of my fortresses have produced only silver in some form, and that drives me nuts.

Also, I've read up on this, and it sounded hopeless, but do you have any advice for aquifers? The place I originally wanted to set my fortress in was haunted, for more of a challenge, but all of those areas had aquifers. I have read the wiki, but I didn't quite understand if it was even possible, or if it was just a toos up that it might be possible.

There's some cool areas with aquifers, I'd really like to try one.

I have the problem with traders refusing equal or higher goods sometimes. Not elves specifically. They say something like "With your goods as they are, I can't see you getting all those items." Usually I am trading clothing I looted from sieges, which is actually worth a decent amount combined.

Sometimes I can work around it, but there's no clear guide as to what bothers the trader. I might try upping the total value I offer them over what their items are worth, but I'm not entirely sure that will work.

The only other piece of advice I'd give on the spike traps is to make sure that you have a fair amount of coverage with them since the hotter demons can wipe out nearby spike traps with the heat of their death explosions, potentially leaving you with a room full of demons and no way to kill them. Also once you have wiped out the initial wave of demons any new ones that spawn act more like extremely deadly wildlife rather then fortress killers. This means that they will be content to wander around hell and slaughter any dwarves that they see, but unless they wander up by pure chance they will feel no need to come destroy your fort and everything that you hold dear.

What if I make the spikes out of copper? Will they melt?

Hearing about the supply/demand system is exciting. I played years ago and was stoked because milking would eventually be in, and I thought that was awesome! I stopped playing for a long time and only recently picked it up again. I really love this game.

The problem with my animals coming to the refuge burrow during a civilian alert doesn't seem to be pet related, and you can pasture pets, I thought you had to if they were grazing animals. They just did it again during another siege, and I went from 200+ animals (that have been fairly worthless, tbh) to a little under 100. Some of that was due to a FB burning down the underground pasture I used for the capybaras and rabbits, though.

I guess I could use a lever instead of a pressure plate. Gremlins will actually become a nuisance then.

Hmm, that's frustrating, if I don't send my civvies to a refuge, they try to claim stuff and re-pasture animals, but I can't have the siege engineer enlisted, or he won't do his job. I really want to use my ballista.

BTW, I have looked around and haven't seen, what bug fixes are currently being worked on? I would kill to have a dungeon master and an economy. That sounds so exciting.

Hmm, it sounds like I'll have to bone up on traps. The most I had looked into them was the weapon and cage traps.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A few other questions. Everytime I send a civilian alert to my dwarves that aren't in an active squad, ALL my herd animals go to the area as well, leading to a death line as the goblins in between them and the refuge burrow take them out en masse. Is this a bug?

How do I set a civilian alert and exclude a couple of siege engineers. I tried setting them in the siege burrow after setting the civilian alert, but they ignore it.

Thanks a lot, you guys respond fast.

DF Gameplay Questions / Demons
« on: February 07, 2012, 10:47:10 am »
Okay, hopefully I'm not spoiling things for anyone, but I have some questions about demon fortresses and Hell.

I stumbled upon a demon fortress, had my butt handed to me, force quit because I didn't even know there -were- demon fortresses, and started max production of adamantine armour and training for all my capable dwarves. I surrounded the fortress in and out with weapon traps and cage traps.

Of course, the demons walked right over my traps and my dwarves, who were gathered closely together, did not succeed in killing even one of them. I don't have any lords as far as soldiers go, but many are adequate or better.

I also dug down into hell, and, shamefully, force quit again, as I wasn't entirely sure what would come of that when I couldn't even handle the demon fortress.

Siege wise I've defeated the goblins so many times they don't even have a leader, though they still try. I might be at war with the elves, since I have offered wood to them a few times accidentally, but I don't think so. (I want my hands on their exotic animals anyway.)

The thing is, I'm kind of bored with mass production, especially when one component gets ahead of another and I have to stop that part for awhile while my stocks get up to speed.

I had a fortress that was awesome because it had iron and flux stone, but I got beat down and had an impossible time recovering it. Really, the only way I want to make a new fortress is with flux stone and iron, but there's no way to be sure of that. The process of making steel just appeals to me.

I like my fortress, but my ultimate goal was kicking demon butt, and all that I have read on them basically states that you -might- kill one if you are lucky. :(

Any advice to help me along?

Thanks.
