General Discussion / Re: Russia Watch Thread/Ветка о России

I guess we could fit this into a hypothetical I used earlier.

The winter is cold, you are short on wood. You can burn ten people to make sure everyone is warm and toasty. You won't die of cold if you don't but you will be uncomfortable. Yes/no?

When you have more than ten people, you can get warm by sticking together. Think about it, collectivist.

You also threaten people's very lives here, it is different.

It's a hypothetical, suspend your belief, no one gets to snuggle together for warmth (or dig into the snow)

Look do you want this toasty gay person fire to happen or not?

The point is, (and I am not really a collectivist, people just keep calling me that,) it will not hurt you or your rights for gay people to have equal representation.

If there is a voiceless and politically weak group in your society, one that exists peacefully and causes harm to no one by virtue of their existence, don't they deserve the rights everyone else enjoys? Isn't that worth fighting for?

I think what we have here is a situation of "the law forbids both peasants and kings to sleep under bridges": Russians think that allowing gays to freely express their sexuality amounts to preferential treatment, even though heterosexual people have no problems with shoving blatant sexualisation into everything from advertisements to movies, while Westerners think that this is merely equal treatment. I support the latter, personally, because I believe that to be fair and just, you either have to have problems with women's asses printed everywhere or not have problems with men's asses being printed in the same places. P., I suppose you will agree with me that if we let heterosexual people talk about their sex lives freely, it would be only fair that we let homosexual people do the same. Or is your argument that the desires of the majority is that the gays do not express their sexuality due to it being unpleasant to the said majority?

I'm not sure what the desires of the majority are. I see what the politicians have done, but I don't live in Russia to know how people feel about it.

More security is dangerous. We deal with an over-militarized police force and violations of our rights regularly for a more "secure" America. The more secure your country, the less free it is.

When tragedies like these happen, people want to run towards more security, but that is when freedom is in the greatest danger.

No, what i am saying is that you are fear mongering and that the chances of something serious happening to Muslims/Arabs is far less likely than something serious happening to Jews or Policemen. i would be far more scared being a Jew or a police officer in France right now than being a Muslim Arab, that's for sure.

actually, you are fear mongering as well.

What I am saying is, taking time to be concerned about only the white majority is a dangerous view. Feeling that harm that might come to a marginalized, brown skinned, minority is of less consequence (in the face of strong examples, including the death of an infant and the assault of a pregnant woman) is extremely dangerous and represents what I saw happen in America.

For the record, none of our responses were good or just, and none of them were worth it.

Cut him off like a gangrenous limb.

Mind you,I have maybe 3 friends, two of whom I haven't talked to in over a year. But I feel it has been a net gain.

And I keep getting called a collectivist. Ha!

The needs of the many do not outweigh the needs of the few. If need be you must suffer as much as those ten so that you have proper motivation to lift them up in society.

Guys guys guys.
Why do we always have to jump to the worst possible scenario? What if she's just selling it? Sheesh.

I got accused of that because I was short a very few pills of xanax (which were a very low dosage) I love going to the hospital. They always treat me like an addict/drug dealer.

Anti-anxiety meds sound like exactly the kind of thing I'd abuse if I were someone else.

It is about equality, comrade.
Yes, it's about equality, which is why these people should not ask for special treatment.

After all, we're all equally oppressed by Russian wealth...

No you are not. You can marry and love whoever you want. You can kiss your girl or boyfriend on the streat and not risk violence or arrest. You can drive, you can speak out about issues that matter to you. Even when the majority is oppressed, they must recognize when a minority is being further oppressed. The fight must be on all fronts.

To be fair, as far as I could tell, Charlie was considered a "left wing" rag. If THAT is what a left wing rag in France is, then something is definitely rotten in the state of Frankreich.

agreed.

Vilanat, are you aware of the violence against muslims that has already occurred because of this, or the support for nationalist political parties that will have a much much larger impact than the terrorist attacks and will promote the oppression of people.

Dwarfy, white people continue to oppress black people in Africa. That is still a thing, from the white people living there to white corporations crippling the average person and taking any potential wealth to be given to the white upper class in the first world.

I realize many people picture Africa as this series of hovels that have always been that way and when apartheid was lifted in south africa that was all fixed and they are responsible for their own fate now, but that is not how interactions between the first and third world ever occur.

I do. so far no casualties. for what i know, not even a slight injury. hardly a comparison to the violence jihadists/radical islamists had performed and will perform because of this attack.

wrong, a woman four months pregnant miscarried due to being assaulted.

Are you really playing a game where you think, because some extremists killed some racist cartoonists, nothing that happens to Muslims or Arabs in the aftermath matters, even if you only don't count it unless there is a death, that's quite a disturbing view to have, and something I fear a lot of French individuals share.

These rallies happening in public feel more and more like hate demonstrations than gatherings of solidarity.

I saw mentions of neo-liberalism in there. That is a nasty disease. It never goes well.

I think what you may ultimately see, assuming people remain passive and indifferent to the issues, and those with the kind of power society has given them (even if that is very little) don't amplify the voices of the oppressed, and that includes groups other than LGBT+ people, of course, is imprisonment for just being gay, or like in the US, conversion therapy (do you have that in Russia, it's horrific)

Comrade, I'm a bit shocked that you would ask that question. No one is asking the majority to "bend over", they are asking them to raise their boot and stop grinding it down, or perhaps prevent others of their kind from grinding down their boot.

It is about equality, comrade.

We have strict laws on quality and safety. Africa does not. Corporations go there because it's cheaper. This makes the African governments money. If the Africans wanted rid of them, they could impose harsher strictures- they do not. Deal with African politics and solve that problem.

Anyway, that's typical corporation behaviour, hardly a trait unique to the West.

That sounds like a lot of excuses for the wholesale oppression of brown skinned people, but I guess this isn't an african politics thread.

other than eldritch beings (and possibly even then) isn't a sanity check for a particular thing a one time deal? I've never made people roll more than once because the shock already happened.

A sane person will become jaded and indifferent to horrors after such an encounter, though that also might mean they're getting PTSD...

Well, if nobody speaks out against them, you can see why some people might draw a negative conclusion about the attitudes of the general populace. This could apply to so many current issues, such as Islamic extremism, race issues in the USA... heck, compile your own list!

Exactly, and I assumed all of this was quite on topic.

If you are not helping the oppressed in your society, ESPECIALLY when they are legally mandated to be silent about their existence, you are perpetuating said oppression.

Fighting the system is frightening, and can lead to bad things, but not fighting it results in far worse.
Gays are not legally mandated to be silent, they are as welcome to speak out as anybody in Russia, including the hysterically anti-Putin newspapers such as "The New Times."

MonkeyHead: I'd say that backlashes against such extreme views do happen more often than not, both in Russia and in the rest of the world, the foreign media just never focuses on them.

as long as they don't mention anything gay oriented right? Like the things you are denying happen to any real degree? They can't talk about that or really even assert they exist without fear of reprisal.

I'm suddenly interested in what can go horribly wrong if we keep our attitude towards gays in way said above:
As long as people cannot tell you're gay you're okay.

This seems like an obtuse question. Or perhaps rhetorical. Why not look at any other situation in which a minority is oppressed and silenced as a matter of law and where that led.
