General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

There are 2 food kitchens, 1shelter, and 1 food bank with 2 miles of that location.  In addition, there are  3 or 4 halfway houses within a half hour walk, and on Sundays a full lunch in a bag is pased out by the local interfaith church.  This last Wensday, Christmas, pulled pork and an extra 'weekly bag' was handed out by the kitchen I volunteer at.  And the amount of state clinics and support sevices nearby is actuallt suprising.

my point being there is alot around, and the erractic nature of requests was offputting.  He walked off towards the shelter, which hands out bagged dinners of 4 ham/cheese sandwiches and 2 apples on the weekend.

Asking passersby for stuff is not done offa sidestreet, where burned out factories and abandoned housed are the prevailing feature.

I feel you don't fully grasp the strain put on these organizations, their inability to manage the large amount of starving transients and poor in general, or the lack of actual resources any of these places have.

The amount of food kitchens in America has exploded, especially with food stamps being cut constantly, and they simply do not have the funding to feed enough people.

And as for homeless shelters, they generally fill up almost immediately, every night. They are also wretched places.

Next time, just give the dude some food. You'll get a great feeling that you did another soul a good deed and all that.

So showing an act of sexism is sexist - this goes back to the integrated WW2 armies earlier. Maybe it was put in for male pleasure, but portraying something is not endorsing it. Obviously Jabba's act in the film is degrading.

I love those gross generalisations of "a man" instead of "you".

When something like that is put in entirely gratuitously (and I don't know how this relates to armies at all) it is sexist. There was no actual justification for it to be there. It was there to sexualize leia, that was the entire purpose of that outfit and her chain.

When I said "the men watching the movie" since I assume that is what you are referring to, would you prefer I say you? Because it was very much put there for male viewers, even if they personally didn't dig it, and probably not just for you.

It is impossible to have a conversation on gender when you are talking to be that will bend over backwards to serve as apologists for this kind of thing.

You, perhaps, do not perceive it as sexist. Okay, fine. But you are not in a position to make that judgement because it is not exploitative of your gender.

That's just silly. Sherlock Holmes didn't even really like women except for one single woman, and that was because she outsmarted him.

He would not just stick it in any lady. He was probably heteroromantic anyway, or biromantic. I don't think he was into sex.

US has the 'Three strikes' system where the third crime you commit WILL end in jailtime, IIRC. People have been sent to prison for stealing cookies.

depends on the state, actually.

Florida, for example, has a ten twenty life law for gun crimes. A women was recently put in jail for a good amount of time for firing a shot into the ceiling to try and scare off her abusive ex-husband. And yes, she was black. Because this is Florida and everyone here is the maximum level of awful.

I do not have fun playing with "Stop Having Fun Guys" who refuse to play outside of competitive rules, strict metagames, etc.

I don't know any of those people. They're a small minority even in the competitive scene. The guy who was fanning as meta knight up there was having fun and he's generally considered to be the best Brawl player in the world. I'll play with two stocks, no items etc. usually, but if someone's like "yo we should play with items" I would just say "yeah okay".
Hey, that's exactly how I play!

I generally stick to Ike, Ness, and the occasional Snake for Brawl, and Robin, Villager, and yet again Ike in 4. I occasionally turn items on for fun, but I make sure I've got the real game-breakers like Gust Bellows, Poké Balls, and Bumpers off.

ooh is that avatar from Chronotrigger?

It was weird that an alien would put a human in sexually revealing clothing, but Jabba may have been doing that for the pleasure of Boba Fett. Slaves are not usually treated with much respect, and the act was clearly done by a bad guy; there was no endorsement of it. It was gratuitous in the way all sexual exploitation is gratuitous.

I'm sorry, you can't make excuses for that one. That was entirely for the men watching the movie.

I don't understand this way of thinking. I present a man with very obvious sexism, and he falls all over himself to justify it in the most absurd ways possible.

Some things are just sexist, you don't have to hate the movie because of it or anything. Not everything has some over complicated explanation or coincidental happening involved.

it shouldn't be about locking people away anyway, it should be about creating a space, possibly not a dangerous, humanity stripping, hostile space, for them to be rehabilitated. Yes, that even includes the rapists.

Personally, I don't think petty theft should ever result in jail time. That individual could just as easily be under house arrest or on probation. Theft isn't the kind of "this person is dangerous to society" crime we should reserve prison for.

Don't get me wrong, there are cases when people should be locked away for life. Serial rapists and killers would fall under that. But prison should always, even in those cases, focus on rehabilitation and helping those people better themselves.

Very few people enter prison, and come out fixed, and even if they do, the requirements afterwards are so crushing that it's almost impossible not to end up back in jail or doing something illegal.

Maybe you should check your oesophagus privilege. Skeletons don't drink juice like you and I do, they absorb it directly into the bone. Like a...

fucking derails.

EDIT: Right, breastfeeding.
So long as there are such things as public decency laws there is room to argue for making public breastfeeding illegal.

Hey, we all have our burden to bear! Having muscles and various tissues comes with all kinds of problems. Just because skeletons can't technically walk or breathe or drink juice doesn't mean MY problems don't matter just as much.

594
I don't actually approve of it, I'm just having a hard time feeling sympathy when it happens to rapists (Steubenville) and murderers (police.)
And that's why we have laws and courts instead of trial by popular demand: It's wrong regardless of who it happens to. If you start undermining this principle you get into alll kinds of trouble ideologically...

but it doesn't really make sense for the rapist to go to jail for 2-3 years and the doxxer of the rapist being shielded because he is a minor (if you rape somebody, you aren't a minor, that status should be revoked) potentially getting 10 years.

595
you guys take SSB waaay too seriously.

I always used it as a drinking game. I got pretty drunk pretty fast like that. Admittedly, I would sometimes have pre-game shots because I always played better drunk.

You're not in trouble? 4maskwolf was talking about the derail, not problems with you asking questions.
Unless something else happened that I missed, it sounds more like your questions being vague or nonspecific.
Earlier he asked me (4~5?) questions at once
The first couple were on topic the other three made it feel like he was tearing at my religion and badgering me. 4mask gave him a warning

You could always ask one question at a time

She

Also, that's not at all in the rules. It would be kind of a silly rule imo, but if he adds it, I will abide by it, and I will try to restrict my questions to you specifically to one at a time in general. But if I am directing my questions at all christians, I'll probably still throw as many in there as I can think of.

earlier he warned me, and it was not at all expected. He's locked the thread twice now in the past couple of hours. I think it's been excessive.

The term, to clarify, is something not invented by rights advocates, but by 4channers, MRAs, red-pillers and what have you. It is specifically meant to be an insult, and is used by the most despicable kind of people. The kind of people that thik the causes we champion are stupid, women are inherently worthless and inferior, and black people are intellectually inferior and all criminals, and who have other colorful opinions about trasngendered people (some of them on 4chan actively working to get trans individuals to kill themselves,) and homosexuals.

Some times rights advocates will use it to throw it back in their face and lessen its power. Personally, I won't touch anything they are responsible for.

it's cool, I had a hitchhiker bestow a christian blessing on my mother-in-law's SUV when we drove him to his house (he was walking ten miles in the blazing heat so maybe it was heatstroke.) Personally, I find that kind of entertainment well worth the trade off of a ride, some money, or some food, and I'm not exactly rolling in cash.
