DF Gameplay Questions / How do I make amulets?

My new mayor has a thing for amulets, but I can't seem to make them directly. According to the wiki amulets are crafts so do I just make crafts? How does it determine which object to make then? Will it randomly make objects and will I have to make random objects until I get an amulet?

DF Gameplay Questions / Do doors block magma?

Do doors block magma (if they are magma safe) or do I need to build a closed flood gate to block magma? I say this because I plan on building a pump stack and have to wonder about how to get the dwarfs out of the stack when building it and still block the magma from flooding the stack.

I just setup my army and one of the soldiers was elected mayor. Will he still train and participate in such activities? Will he fight when the squad is ordered to kill a unit?

Or will he just ignore the orders?

I would think it rather cool if the mayor was an ass kicker, but I don't see him training with the others.

Hello all!

I have put together a video using version 0.34.10 of Dwarf Fortress in a Let's Play video in attempt to help others who haven't played DF and show my gameplay style when it comes to fort setup.

Each episode is about an hour long due to the timesink DF can be  8) and I'm currently uploading the 3rd episode and I've got more in the works

I always like to watch how other people setup forts and their process behind it so I thought I would try my hand at one and show the world how I go about it. Any comments and feed back would be appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Keep running out of plump helmet spawn

Something since one of the updates is that my farms keep running out of plump helmet spawn and other seeds without making new ones during harvest. I have four plots with 2 running full plump helmet spawn and two running cave wheat and pig tails. What am I don't wrong?

I made sure seeds is set to not be cooked so I don't know what is happening to the seeds unless farmer skill is somehow related to the amount of seeds created.

Also as a secondary question, what is the most efficient setup in regards to plots and number of farmers/planters to feed and quench a force of over 200?

Does plot size matter? Or is it the number of plots in question. Should I build a single really big plot? Or maybe a bunch of small plots? Or mabe 4 to 5 big plots and have 5 farmers tending each.

Any advice on farming would be appreciated.

I just started a .09 game on a new embark and the first think I notice is that when I build a trap in the hallway to the depot, it blocks wagon access.

Is this new or a bug?

DF Gameplay Questions / Human caravan never leaves

I've been having a strange problem...

The human caravan that comes to visit never leaves. In fact it stays around long enough for the dwarf caravan to come and ride over top of them at the trading depot. I was able to trade with the dwarven caravan no problem. Yet the humans still remains. Since the dwarfs made it in, I know there is a passable route to the depot. Is this a bug or has other people seen humans stick around longer than they should have?

Lately it seems that goblins aren't suicidal as they used to be and won't run headlong into a Human Goblin Wave into the hallway of traps as they used to. I tried creating fortifications from one end of the hall way to a penned dog which hopefully would lure them as they would see the dog and path to it over the traps, but so far they just sit there and look at the dog and don't step one foot on the traps.

Is there a new statergy to try or am I going to have to man dwarf up and send military out to do the job.

A couple of questions...

First, how can I tell the value of any given room.

I made a legendary dining hall, but I only know I did because the dwarfs report it as a good thought.

I want to check individual rooms to see what they worth.

Secondly, if I can check to see a value of a room, can I break it down and see the values of each item?

I would like to see how much a gold table is worth versus the stone statue in the corner.

So my dwarfs are complaining about old clothing. I got a bunch of cloth from a caravan somehow... (Possibly related to why the humans are sieging me right now) so I am about to build a bunch of clothes for the dwarfs.

I'd rather keep it to a minimum so what do they need exactly.

Shirts, pants, and socks I am going to guess? Anything else?

During the last human caravan they left right as the dwarf caravan was arriving and they had a traffic jam in the hallway leading from the trade depot to the outside. Goblins showed up and resolved that problem. However, I think they killed the human diplomat in the process.

Now I have a handful of humans sitting outside my fort all angry over the fact that I let goblins resolve their inability to leave on time. (or maybe the dwarfs were early I don't know).

Now if I just leave the humans alone and wait for them to leave, will the eventually go back to being peaceful and sending caravans?

Also, if not, will they be affected by new traps I built since their diplomat was last in the fort (I've built quite a few) or are they simply "trap immune"?

DF Gameplay Questions / Flies? How does one deal with them?

I have swarms of flies around my farm area which persistently bother my dwarfs. Is there something one can do to get rid of them or mitigate them somehow?

I'm at 233 dwarfs and they are still popping out babies left and right.

Is this normal or maybe I've messed up my game somehow?

I just made a water pump to pump water out of a channel into a cistern on the other side. Its still stagnant.

What am I doing wrong or did they change something with the way water works?

Also how do I get rid of mud... It seems to have brought some in with the pump.

DF Gameplay Questions / Is it possible to label levers?

Often I find myself wondering if this lever will perform a simple task or open the fort up to the horde of invaders outside.

I try to put all my levers in one geographical location so the dwarfs have easy access but it tends to backfire when I forget which lever is which.
