DF Gameplay Questions / So I accidently flooded my fortress...
« on: March 24, 2012, 01:17:44 am »
I abandoned... Played around with a few other sights and then got fustrated thinking I could figure out a way to wall it off and pump out the water....

Basically I thought I could just build a hole and a tunnel underneath it to build a well... But low and behold it poured through it and filled the fort. I'm trying to drop a block right there but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

Here is the image of the spot I am trying to drop. I guess I need to channel above it but how do I drop a block in it without channeling around it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

How does one drop blocks in the first place. Once that is done I need to figure out a way to pump out the water. I guess I could just build a pump above and pump it straight into the river.

Any advice on this? I'm totally helpless.

DF Gameplay Questions / Civilizations
« on: March 23, 2012, 05:31:19 pm »
This might be a very newb question but if I embard and I press c, and the only civ is a dwarf civ, does that mean all the other civs died out or they just haven't been discovered yet?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf numbering designations system
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:55:06 am »
I just saw a thread where someone numbered his dwarfs.

It's so simple but ingenious, I wish I thought of it myself.

Actually, I just thought of creating more complex designations.

Dwarfs will be numbered sequentially by class and order that they came into the fort...

Example:

EX001-001 Expedition leader
MI001-002 First miner
MI002-003 Second miner
FA001-004 First farmer
and so on...

If the expedition leader dies the next one will be renamed...

EX002-005 Second expedition leader etc etc

That way I can look at them and see quickly their designation and order they came into the fort which makes them more unique and easier to identify.

Dwarfs drafted into the military will be named on what squad they are in but also the order of squad mates. (two digits for second part only because you can only have 10 members in a squad)

SQ001-01-059 Captain of the guard
SQ001-02-076 Second member of the first squad
SQ002-01-112 Leader of second squad.
SQ002-02-157 Second member of the second squad.

Dwarfs who are suspected of vampire get a v at the end of the designation.

ex MA005-132-v which is the 5th mayor, 132nd to arrive at fort, and is suspected of being a vampire.

Once they are confirmed to be a vampire... I will give them a capital V.

Thoughts on this and would anyone have any other systems of naming their dwarfs? I am quite interested in making my fort into 1984 labor camp.

DF Gameplay Questions / How do you smelt limonite blocks?
« on: March 10, 2012, 04:55:23 pm »
So I accidentally asked the trader for limonite blocks instead of just limonite?

Is there anyway to smelt them?

So after surviving my 10th or so goblin siege by letting them go into my trap meat grinder, I have run out of things to do on my checklist and I am thinking about getting around to dealing with the 3 FB's who live in my caverns.

Now my question is thus...

Are forgotton beasts known (or at least prone) to fly? How can I check this? I basically have an idea to dig above them and let crossbow dwarfs use them as practice, but I don't really want them climbing out.

Secondly, once I discover all my cavern areas, do more FB's come at random? In case the I kill of the ones down there and I get a flying one out of the blue...

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about map sizes
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:58:40 pm »
I keep seeing people talking about playing a small map at 1x1 and some people talk about 12x12 map (but probably too big)...

My question is, what is the default size of a map, how can you tell what it is, and how can you change it to something else?

Say if I had a hallway lined with large serrated discs... Would they kill the undead or just lop off their body parts which will come back to life?

Could menacing spikes kill the undead as well?

Or would I be looking at a hallway of blunt objects to break their bones?

I guess what would be the best strategy? Use discs to chop up zombies and then atom smash them or pit them near door?  Or should I  use a hallway lined of cage traps after the zombies make it through the weapon traps?

DF Suggestions / Dwarven holy man noble aka "vampire hunter"
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:35:52 pm »
Vampires overall sound like they need to be fleshed out in general, but one thing that would make a great addition is a dwarven priest or holy man who serves as anti-vampire role.

Once you become a metropolis you should get a "wandering holy man" who will ask you to take up residence as a noble whose quest it is to "root out evil". Not only should he seek out vampires (and possibly other beasts) but also religious practices that he deems intolerable. Sometimes one will arrive chasing a vampire that has migrated, other times he will come seeking to spread his beliefs.

If a vampire crime has occurred, the holy noble will go around checking out other dwarfs and make an accusation. But beware, the holy man might be biased and accuse someone of a different god than he worships simply out of prejudice to face the wrath of the hammer.

When the vampire is dealt with (or there wasn't one to begin with) the  holy man will go and try to convince other dwarfs to worship his god of choice. But look out for FUN! if you decide to let a holy man into your fort, if the other dwarf doesn't convert, then the holy man will get an unhappy thought and if too many unhappy thoughts occur, the holy man will become enraged and take out his wrath on your heathen fort by going berserk. (a social holy man will get more people converting worship of gods and a less social one will have more trouble).

Also as a bonus, if a clown appears on the map, the holy man will become enraged and have bonus fighting clowns until he dies in a martyrdom crusader like kind of fashion.

Basically I have a great embark location that I want to use again for a future game, so can you use the seed to copy the landmass? How complicated would that be? I'm not really that interested in history, but if I could copy that too somehow I'd be more happy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hens not claiming nest boxes.
« on: March 04, 2012, 08:26:58 pm »
Not seen this one before which is strange because the last time I looked they had the nest boxes claimed. Now I got some peacocks into the same pasture who claimed two nest boxes but the hens are just sitting around not laying eggs.

Anything I should do?

I made a booze stockpile upstairs away from the stockpile and notice a lot of dwarfs just going into get a drink without going to the dining hall. But then it seems that they don't really eat in the stockpiles but take stuff to a dining room.

So am I right that dwarfs take their food to a place to eat and get the dining room bonus? And that they just drink wherever they happen to be so it doesn't matter if they don't drink the booze near the dining hall?

42
So I went about creating a proper 3x3 prison room with bed, table, chair and two food and drink stockpiles, but my dwarfs insist on using the chair and table to eat on and persistently take food and drink out of the stockpile.

The prison was pathed outside the grand dinging hall and food/drink stockpiles so I thought that perhaps the dwarfs were just lazy and were taking the shortest path to food and drink so I made it so you had to go through the grand dining hall and food and drink stockpiles but they still went to the prison room to do their business. So I made an extremely long hall so that they would have to travel an insane distance to get to the prison room but they still insist on traveling through the dining hall (which has plenty of empty chairs) all the way to the room to eat.

I guess I could just remove the chair and table and see what happens but I think they will still try to take food and drink out of the stockpiles or is it because the stockpile has a higher number and had a higher order of preference to the dwarfs?

So an impossible to meet mandate was failed so they threw the poor bookkeeper in jail for 30 days. They seem to be bringing him water in buckets but they don't seem to be feeding him. Do I need to make bowls or something? There are tons of "no job" dwarfs sitting around with feed prisoner on their labors on. Maybe they just want him to die.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf hippies complain about the draft.
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:56:46 pm »
So I got a handful of dwarfs who are unhappy because they complain about the long patrols and drafts. Currently I have the schedule as a lenient on month off month of training and even then only 6 members are required to train out of 10.

Are my dwarfs hippie pansies or should I do something to improve their moral? I guess I could put statues in the barracks and smooth everything out to see if that helps.

DF Suggestions / Allow wooden objects to be burned to make fuel.
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:10:51 pm »
Even though I have plenty of fuel around these days, I can't help but think of all those useless wooden objects elves bring in caravans (or happen to drop about the map after they get ambushed without me lifting a finger) and how much more useful they would be if we could designate them to B for burn and make charcoal and ash and other fine products from the burning of wood.

That way I won't feel like I am wasting storage space when I have heaps of elven wooden gear that seems to accumulate over time.
