DF Gameplay Questions / Prevent looms from auto tasking?
« on: December 30, 2012, 03:26:16 pm »
Is there a way to prevent looms from automatically spinning thread into cloth and so on?

Occasionally I want to manually add the task but not have it do it automatically for me so I can get thread into my hospital.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most annoying bug(s) in DF

I'm not sure if this is considered a bug or not, but the fact you can't replace a count, duke, or king if they die is annoying.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: cannot identify vampire
« on: December 22, 2012, 05:22:10 pm »
When I have a vampire problem, I create a communal dorm of beds in the same room with the meeting area for the dinning hall. That way when the vampire feeds everyone eating will notice and submit a witness report.

Now this can mess up nicely laid plans if you've already built individual beds for everyone but you can just temporarily forbid all the individual beds rooms (or lock the doors) and force people to sleep in the public area. Strangely enough dinning halls do not cause noise to wake up people in the dorms so it might be a long term solution.

Personally I perfer my dwarves to get happy thoughts from their own beds so I only do this only when there is a known vampire.

Once you figure out who the vampire is you can burrow him into a locked room and throw him clean clothes every now and then and make him an eternal book keeper.

DF General Discussion / Re: Gnomoria (a DF ripoff)
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:56:25 pm »
I find it highly immoral how the major points of describing a DF are exactly what gnomoria is. My problem is the developing team is trying to make money out of it without paying royaltys to toady. I havent played it but a look through pictures and descriptions says to me that it is a rip-off and credit needs to go where credit is due. I understand the arguement that it helps DF's popularity. BUT the purpose of the game are not to do so. The purpose is to make money and that is where I draw the line.

The US courts have determined that you can copyright the art work of a game and the source code but you can't copyright the rules of a game. In fact, it is 100% legal to make a copy of the board game Monopoly by Hasboro as long as you change the artwork, rename everything different names, and use different game pieces.

In that respect is good because otherwise we would have seen Nintendo sue any platformer game simply because it had the same ruleset as Mario Bros.

In fact someone could make an ASCII game of DF as long as they used their own source code and it would still be legal.

I really have enjoyed Dragoncon but sadly haven't been able to go for the past few years.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Too stupid to eat?

Just make a kitchen and make a dedicated cook to make egg biscuits.

Personally I save all the plump helmets for brewing because cooking destroys plump helmet seeds but brewing creates them. You can go into z menu and then kitchen to turn off cooking of plump helmets if you like. If you have enough chickens you can feed an entire fort with just cooked eggs.

Minimizing and restoring the application temporarily fixes it. Other than that the only way to stop it is to turn off true type which kind of hurts the eyes so I put up with having to minimize it every now and then.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Setting up a Dwarven Day Care Center
« on: August 11, 2012, 03:32:26 pm »
Awww nuts, turns out kids don't respect burrows. I guess I'll have to expand the chamber a bit, so that it holds a bed. Then once the child goes to take a nap, I lock the door behind him/her. Should I use a cougar instead of a dog?

I've had weird luck with children and burrows. I put about 5 children in a burrow on standing on a minecart track which 1 out of the 5 did... and was promptly ran over. Another child was walking into the room at the same time and the one child bounced off the track into the other child in a fabulous pool game shot.

So yes sometimes children do respect burrows, but not always. You'll have better luck with the bed idea.

yeah getting marksdwarves to reload can suck a bit.

If they are on inactive orders (off-duty) and they come onto active service (through rotation of schedule or your action with 's'quad menu) then they restock ammo, its a bit hacky but you can usually persuade them to refill with some flipflopping of alerts.

If they have line of sight to a hostile then they will never reload unless they are moved by you or a patrol route order..  They are still engaged in combat even if they have no ammo, they are shooting dirty looks at the enemy and looking desperately for a path to melee (and death).  Cutting LoS tends to cause them to reload too, even if they are going straight back to active duties.

It seems they assess if the new duty needs bolts.  dwarves heading for a barracks dont seem to fill quivers, dwarves headed for an archery range certainly do, as should patrol and burrow defence troopers.  This last bit is somewhat anecdotal, its not foolproof.

The one idiot-check that you can do on this is to go to 'm'ilitary, 'e'quip, 'f'ammunition.  Here you can see what each squad is assigned when it comes to ammo.  Double check these, i sometimes find i've got a melee squad all wearing full quivers or smth equally dumb like marksdwarves with no assigned bolts.(cos the morons with axes have 'em all)

Thanks for the advice. I got my bolt stockpile in my barracks so maybe that is the problem. I'll setup an archery range and put the stockpile in there and setup a patrol between the fortifications and the ammo stockpile.

I have a bunch of targets that I need to taken out, but my marksdwarfs are running out of arrows and even when I set them to inactive and then reassign them to the burrow to the place where they need to be shooting they don't pick up more bolts. I have plenty of bolts to be shot, but they have no interest in picking them up between assignments. What should I do to make them pick them up?

DF Gameplay Questions / Clowns and stone fall traps

Question, can clowns be killed by stone fall traps? I know they can by manual spear traps, but would a hall way of stone traps work as well?

Hrm.... If I am not mistaken don't you need jugs for the honey? I thought jars were the same, but my beekeeping had stone jugs.

I use Iron Hand graphics. You can see what it looks like in my Let's Play videos in my sig. I think most people use it or Phobeus but I don't like the Phobeus curved corners.
