DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fishing, Dwarf style...

Sounds pretty cool, so you can constantly get around 10+ fish? Think we can get a pic as a reference

I will endeavor to do so:p I have only done it once, but they came in pretty quick. Soon as this siege is over (read, I open the river to kill them all MWAHAHAHA), I'll see how many fish I get the second time and get a screen :-D

EDIT:

Well, I can see up to 6 at a time, as  I was about to shut the intake so it would drain... Winter hit, and froze the waterfall. While it's kinda cool seeing the water flow frozen in midair, I do still have 20-some goblin siegers outside, and my main entrance is now frozen at both ends with 6/7 water in it, lol...

Hmm... I'm going to uncap the aquifer at the bottom of the stairs and open the inner door. That'll drain it. Lets see if I can survive this tantrum spiral long enough, lol

E2: While I wait for the passage to drain, enjoy these pictures :-D

Seems ass if you're in a very hairy situation that could easily go to shit. I'd suggest putting out some assassins ass soon ass possible.

sometimes sieges occur in rapid succession.

if kobolds manage to steal something then they might get bolder and send ambush parties. they're super weak though so not a big concern. might lose a woodcutter or a fisher or something

K. I made the mistake of sending out my military for the first siege... Yaaa... They got slaughtered, lol. I'm just pulling out of the tantrum spiral when an elven caravan comes... Followed seconds later by the second siege. So now the elves are going to think I killed off the traders, and I just got them bringing wagons again (robbed em blind the first time, they didn't bring wagons again for a while, lol), and there are still 19 dwarves left at 0 happiness, just primed to tantrum...

Been having fun, thankfully just not that ‼FUN‼ yet:p

Yep, this is a minor bug to do with animal handling, happens when you shear/milk a creature also, no biggy, you can just ignore it basically.

Except in your particular case, where the burrow was causing actual problems.

Turned out not to be a problem. I had a bridge there to lock down the fortress, burrow ran up to it. So guess what happened to the cat? :-D

My vampires are locked up in my lever room. Gaurantees I always get the lever I want, when I need it:p

All of my dwarfs go into a "processing chamber." When one get's thirsty, hungry, or falls asleep, I release it from the burrow. The last ones to want a drink, food, or sleep, I move to a "post-processing chamber." If they still don't want to eat, drink, or sleep, they go to the lever room:p

Off of the lever room, I have the managers office, so work orders are always available to be filled. I have enough vamps now, I'm going to add a bookkeeper vamp, as well.

For some reason, they elected a vamp as mayor (idiots), luckily you can reassign that like any other noble position, so I booted him from office so liaisons wouldn't get emptied:p

Is it common to have back to back sieges?

18th Gelena 132 and 13th Timber 132, 2 back to back sieges from goblins.

I only have 1 goblin civ, as well... So it's not multiple civs...

Second question, to kobalds ever siege? They've been trying to steal stuff like crazy, been killing a lot of em.

This happened entirely by accident, but it's actually pretty awesome.

My entrance tunnel runs along side a river right before a waterfall, so my "trap" is, they enter the entrance tunnel, I shut it off from the outside world and the fortress, close the floodgates on the waterfall, and reroute the river through my entrance.

My original hope was that the river would flow rapidly enough to flush enemies out the exit and they'd drop into the whirlpool-like area from the 2 side rivers meeting under the waterfall from the 3rd.

Instead, anything in there drowns and slowly moves towards the exit. The exciting part, however, is that when I routed the river through my entrance, I GOT 12 FISH swimming in there:p close the river off, water levels drop, they start flopping around.... My dwarves go and collect them all :-D

I could actually set this up so I never need to risk another fisherdwarf going over the falls, just keep bringing in fish, and the haulers carry them down...

I feel this is a pretty dwarfy activity, myself:p

I think this would be more of a bug than anything, but it was pretty funny...

An animal handler is bringing a cat inside when a siege occurs, so I set my cilivian alert status to Siege, which applies them all to an inside burrow.

I notice a lot of red text flashing, so I look into my announcements window. I had !!136!! pages of:

"Urist cancels handle Large Creature: Animal inaccessible."
"Urist cancels store item in barrel: Handling dangerous creature."

I look, and the handler is inside the burrow, and the cat is outside. They got stuck right on the line.

The question must be asked, however...

...Cats are dangerous creatures?

Update:

Apparently that dwarf was a Weregila. How do I know? Her ghost is hanging around her corpse at the bottom of the waterfall, and it transforms every full moon:p

... In it's effort to run away, it jumped over the waterfall.

It's now dead, within seconds of it appearing...

This is why I'm building walls along that cliff, lol... Already put a row of grates right before the drop, with a row of floogates after, so I can stop the flow and rescue dwarves... Only took 9 dying to get me to try some kind of intervention:p

Werething, eh? What can I do? Capture her? Kill her? What's the best course of action here?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

... Am I supposed to be scared?

EDIT: She came seperately, by herself, several days after the migration wave...

Is she just one of those types that has to make a big entrance? :p

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's what I get when I view her. She's listed as a friendly under others in the units menu, and I can't assign her labors in DF, but I can in DT. :p

Any explanation?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: are siege engines useful in DF2012?

Yup. I especially enjoy firing them into necromancer towers in my attempts to troll the undead.

Holy crap, that's right, we actually have something we can siege now!

I can feel your pain. My current embark is the first time in 3 .31 world's, 3 .34.01 world's, and now the second .34.02, that I've found ANY coal or iron ore, multiple fortresses each world, all sites chosen by searching multiple deep, multiple shallow, and flux. Most fortresses fell due to tantrum spirals for one reason or another, but I usually got the entire sedimentary layers by the surface mined out, and a significant chunk of the next set of layers down.

This embark, 3 rivers meet at a waterfall, 2 layers of soil on top of an aquifer, but below that, I hit coal and iron immediately. Looking forward to spreading some exploratory tunnels tonight to see what I got :D

One of my dwarves (a cheese maker, I believe, that I was grooming for a military position) turned out to be a necromancer, of all bloody things. Who knew? I mean, hell, I figured I'd occasionally have to deal with a vampire at best. Well, anyway, trade caravan showed up and filled him fulla arrows when he tried to start shit. Hit him so many times, his body was propelled into my moat. If it ended here, I'd have no problem. But, since he was still technically a member of my fortress, things started getting silly. Then annoyingly silly. Then hilariously silly.

See, since I couldn't get into the moat to fetch his corpse for burial, his evil necromancer ghost came back in a little bit of a bad mood. Kept bringing back his old corpse under the water. This was more or less harmless since the poor zombie was trapped down there - me having pre-emptively removed all but two of the ramps leading out of it and those two impossible to access - and the necro-ghost seemed rather obsessed with hanging out with its bloated zombie corpse, scaring the Armok out of any fisherdwarves that passed by on their way to work. Eventually the corpse would 'drown' (I know, right?) and the ghost would bring it back. This cycle continued for quite some time.

Until the corpse was reduced to nothing more than a decayed skeleton. Then the necro-ghost got fuckin' serious, in the most amusing way possible. He went to the fishery (which had been actively working for half a decade, bringing in mussels) and brought back as many mussel shells as he possibly could, numbering into the hundreds. These ZOMBIE MUSSEL SHELLS then went on a total rampage throughout my fortress (fishery was built inside the walls of my fort), slaughtering every single living thing they encountered, including my 10 expert-level militia-men equipped in steel plate and similar weapons, and 40 other dwarves enlisted as wrestlers. My fort laid low by a single-minded mass of undead crustaceans and their necro-ghost master who guides them from my moat.

Honestly, not even mad. How can I possibly get mad at such an amazingly insane defeat?

*clap...clap...clap*

that is one of the funniest things iv heard in a long time

^^^ this. Lol, that is so awesome.
