DF General Discussion / When did kobolds become such badasses?
« on: July 13, 2014, 09:45:53 pm »
I'm seeing a lot of really weird things in Legends mode for my world in regards to kobolds.

In particular, they can apparently devour others - including, but not limited to trolls no less!
(and of course do they usual stuff that is stealing things, bringing them to such fun places as the Untrustworthy Cavern - aptly named, hm?)

Is this normal now? Was it normal before? Are kobolds now that scary to face off or are Legends exaggerating?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Chain Poem
« on: July 10, 2014, 11:52:53 am »
I saw that game on another forums and thought it was a really fun experience, if you're into it.

Essentially, one person makes a line, and the next person finishes it so that it rhymes with the previous line, and makes another line for the next person. And so on and so forth.

You've seen these kinda games before, but instead of making a crime sound innocent or whatever, you make rhymes.
It doesn't have to be strictly coherent, as long as it rhymes and doesn't break any universally accepted rules like no nudity and whatnot it's all fair game.

I'll get the ball rolling:

At long last, the heroes arrive at the tower,
Go.

I haven't really had much luck, time or opportunity to make them work, and I haven't seen anyone post about them either.
But if you did successfully start one...Tell us how that went. I'm too busy murdering out hamlets in the night to really rebel against evil occupants, mostly because there aren't any of these around...

49
So, I generated a pocket world with a short history, average amount of sites and civilizations and other things that would make it a relatively smooth (for my PC) world to experience.

Because I never play Fortress mode, I went straight into Adv. Mode as a dwarf named Bomrek Ethabber "Rinseearth", your average axedwarf superhero demigod. I've been plunged into the only currently existing dwarven fortress, Likotsefol "Inkentered".

While wandering around the place I found some interesting things such a cheese store (from which I promptly stole a few pieces), but I was I was on the lookout for a lonely dwarf/goblin (since this was a dwarven-goblin fortress apparently) for me to horribly murder without anyone else's knowledge.
Finally, an opportunity arises. I prepare myself to strangle the poor dwarf when I suddenly realize it's Zefon Tunodor "Doorroot", the king of The Glaze of Rubbing (ie. the only dwarven civ around).

So I decide to take this further - murder the king, spread the news and claim myself as the new lord. So I proceed to wrestle the monarch, but he refuses to be strangled, so I pull out my weapons and hack his neck off, much to nobody's acknowledgement, despite his cries for help. I then carry the corpse away into a small nearby bedroom and butcher him there for the sake of it, because apparently people weren't all that impressed when I showed them his butchered remains.

Much to my surprise I wasn't met with much opposition, except for the occasional spits in my direction from people like the captain of the guard or a human (I think) diplomat. Otherwise people seem to either react with "It is terrifying." or "It was inevitable.", which may imply that he wasn't the best king around...Either way, I decided to change the name of the site to Boatmurdered (totally not related to the probably most famous succession game in DF's history), though it still remains as Inkentered in the legends mode. I then retired, and the history ends here for now.

What will happen next? I'm not sure. I will probably make another adventurer and visit the fortress again, 2 weeks forward, to see where things stand and if my previous character is still alive.
Also this reaction felt kinda ignorant when I heard it:

What I also did was give the stolen pieces of cheese (along with a stolen scimitar) to a nearby peasant and see what happens to him - if the original owner(s) of said items are now going to go after him, I think we may have some low-level framing in the game.

So I'm currently having a metric crapton of fun as an elf climbing around in trees in a forest. But I'm getting kinda (very) hungry.
Thing is, I'm not sure if the cherry/plum trees I seem to wander around in have any actual fruit in them for me to pick and eat. I've seen some pinecones but eeeh, those aren't really edible.

Do the fruit trees have their fruit hidden within their canopies or am I starving myself to death trying to look for some?

DF General Discussion / 764 days
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:39:22 pm »
764 days.
Or 2 years, 1 month, 4 days including today have passed from the release of 0.34.11 to the dawn of 0.40.11.

That's a long time if you ask me. Let's see what it takes to beat it!

52
Let's stop here for a second...
What about the Wiki?

It's effectively erased as far as most people are concerned now, what with 0.40 BEING A THING!
...What do we do about it now?

DF General Discussion / DF 0.40.01 is out!

If you ever wanted to see a MOBA based on one of the more successful Cartoon Network licences in recent memory...Well, this it one such game.

ATBP takes all your favorite characters from Adventure Time such as Finn, Jake, the Ice King and Princess Gumball and puts them in a game not unlike DotA or League of Legends, with champions, minions, towers, lanes and all that good jazz in 3v3 battles.
And you can play it in your own browser. (although I would much prefer a downloadable client because we all know how shitty browser games can perform at times)

The game is available on the Cartoon Network website and is 100% free to play with no microtransactions... (fixed the link)
Well, okay, there are microtransactions in the form of skins and the so-called backpacks, which are presets of items you can spend your levels on within the game, but IIRC those are purchased with the ingame currency you can only get from playing and not paying. (you start with all your abilities, which you have 3 of, you only level up specifics items, so it's more similar to Awesomenauts in that regard than it is to other games in the genre)

I mean seriously, as similar this is to League of Legends (passives and brushes are on the LoL-wing of MOBAs rather than Dota) it still manages to do some things in a unique and admittedly rather simplified manner, but honestly, I like it that way. Plus how many other MOBAs out there are playable in a browser for God's sake?

I haven't played much of it yet, but damn, I might give it a few more shots agianst bots before stepping into online.
Too bad I see no healers or trueform supports...
* DarkDXZ makes a sad face

Either way, what do you think about it, folks? Is it a genuinely good MOBA or yet another licensed game, never to be seen again?
(Note here: I heard that it's in open beta, but we all know how overused this term is nowadays...)

Other Games / Plink - make music with other people in real time
« on: July 03, 2014, 11:22:35 am »
So I started to watch all 3 Vsauce channels, and damn they're amazing.
In particular when watching DONG...Things you can Do Online Now, Guys, I found Plink - a cool little game where you create music with other people in real time...Simply by clicking and changing your colors.
I'm not entirely sure if it qualifies as a game but why shouldn't it?

You can make some really cool-sounding, if a bit random, electronic(-ish) music even with as few as two people, but the more the merrier. So join, please. :chew:
(if you ever find someone called DarkDXZ, you can be sure it's me)

DF General Discussion / This is it, guys
« on: June 30, 2014, 06:56:01 pm »
It's July now. Extremely early July, mind, but July nonetheless.
All bets are off now. DF2014 is closer than ever, and the longest development cycle yet is about to end...

So I've got a few, rather arbitrary, questions to you:

- When (day-wise) do you think the release is going to come out?
- What is its version number?
- On a scale from 1 (unplayable without a hot fix) to 10 (less bugged than 34.11) how broken is the new release gonna be?
- Finally... Fortress mode or Adventure mode?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / [SG] Gun Francisco: Guntarctica
« on: June 23, 2014, 09:49:18 am »

"If there is one place that the peoples have not burned to the ground yet, it's Guntarctica. And the Ammoon. And that one fast food bar on the road to the Machinese border." - Gorbachev, human raider, 2055

After the Atomic War ended, the world was left in a mutant-infested turmoil. Most of the continents were annihilated, and only the toughest ones survived, and even then they ended up as horrifying mutants - except they are not all that scary. Except for those who are. And they are very scary. And very rare.

Most people have accepted guns as objects of worship, as they have dictated the current state of the world, and nowadays are rather rare. The few remaining ones are usually one's most prized possession, and are also the sign of power. Ammunition has become everyday currency, while pre-war money has become worthless paper and is mostly used as fuel.

Guns are not the only thing that matter however. People have been mutating since day 1 of the apocalypse, and are often given new and unique powers thanks to it. Thus, the primary mutagen - Muta-Cola, is now very sought-after, and is easily considered the post-apocalyptic gold. However, fewer and fewer cans of this radioactive beverage remain, but stories tell of other types of mutagens being traded on the black market (which is to say, all markets) that can mutate the drinker in ways never seen before, but the effects of those sketchy mutagen drinks are not known until it's too late...

When not fighting over ammo, Muta-Cola, guns or all of the above, the humans, frogs and birds of the wasteland tend to spend their time at their makeshift bases scattered across the land, planning their next move...

...And once the resources of the civlized continents have been almost completely depleted, they all turn towards the last untouched place on Earth...

Antarctica.
Or rather...
Guntarctica.

Because you know that when gun-obsessed mutants take over the world everything needs to have a gun-related pun in its name. Gundamnit, those people...

Head to the ever-so-slowly melting South Pole and make it yours before anyone else does!

Spoiler: Races (click to show/hide)

Who are you and how many guns do you have?
Scratch that, you have none. Explosives?

No, forget about those too. All you have is a melee weapon. What melee weapon do you have?
Lastly...A, B or C?

DF General Discussion / Happy 2nd birthday, DF 0.34.11!
« on: June 04, 2014, 02:29:33 am »
Okay, I guess (dem timezones) it's not June 4th over where Toady lives (yet), but in Europe now it's the two years since the last DF version was released.

Pretty long time ago if you think about it, and yet most people are still here. In any other community the big part of the playerbase would likely quit after such a long period without any updates if I were to guess. :P

(What's funny is how it takes more time to release a new DF update than it takes to make a new CoD/BF game, as side note...)

General Discussion / Things that made you DISAPPOINTED today
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:15:13 am »
Every now and then, you are waiting for something eagerly, being almost at the edge or at least midly excited, and when it eventually comes...It turns to be crap.

And you end up being disappointed.
Like, Hercules level of disappointed.

Have you been DISAPPOINTED by something today?
Well, probably not a bad idea to share it, I suppose?

...Though I'm not sure if this falls under the category of RAAAAAGE/sad/WTF?, but you don't have to be exactly angry or sad or confused when you're DISAPPOINTED.

(As is the case with emotional threads, PLEASE don't post anything that may be considered offensive, not-disappointing or otherwise inappropriate for the thread. Thank you very much.)

==================================

Starting off with me kinda-ranting about Awesomenauts.

See, there's this relatively-recent thing on their website called Voltar's Vault (of Omniscient Revelations), which in short is a place for them to post updates about the upcoming patch, with each new version of the Vault covering a different patch (in this case 2.5).
And they don't update it exactly regularly.

The previous update was on May 21, which was them announcing a livestream showcasing something uber awesome about the patch. It happened two days later and showcased a new character and some smaller things. That was 13 days ago (the announcement, not the stream). The beta for the patch launched soon after the stream and everyone who bought beta access could play that character.

You would think that after such a long period of waiting (and sometimes new updates come multiple times per day, mostly in the case of those blurry sneak peeks though) they would reveal something awesome...What did they come up with?
Revealing the character and one of his skills. Both of which everyone knew about for well over a week.

I understand they needed to post those up anyway to keep the Vault consistent, but after such a long period of waiting you would have expected something a BIT less DISAPPOINTING.

General Discussion / Weird request
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:41:00 am »
Anyone mind going to their profile (the place where you edit your sig and the like) and copying the link over here?
I'm on the phone right now and let's just say it's not easy for me to get there, if not outright impossible.

Thanks in advance!
