Otherwise they are always annoying dwarves that goes outside , running to death.

So?

Anyway, yeah, building a wall is an excellent way to defend your fortress. It even works against building destroyers because it doesn't count as a "building" for that purpose.

Good luck with not losing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Wheelbarrow hauling question

Thanks!

So I'm to assume that "Push/Haul Vehicles" only applies to minecarts, right?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Wheelbarrow hauling question
« on: June 02, 2012, 10:24:39 am »
Does the "Push/Haul Vehicles" labor apply to wheelbarrows?

Sounds like kind of a dumb question, but I don't think so.

My evidence:
  • In my current fort, I created a Dwarf Therapist custom profession called "Drudge," which had hauling enabled. All my other dorfs (ie the useful ones) had hauling disabled.
  • However, since Dwarf Therapist does not work with "Push/Haul Vehicles," I didn't do anything to those labors.
  • When I checked the dwarves behind the wheelbarrows that transported stone to my large stone stockpile, they were all drudges.

Is this just random chance, or does "Push/Haul Vehicles" only apply to minecarts?

(note: The wiki did not have this information.)
(and yes I am kind of a n00b so that's why I have stupid questions like this)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Human Caravan.

Well...

A human caravan came onto my map and got ambushed by a bunch of goblins, one trader and his wagon died.
his wagon died.

God, I love Dwarf Fortress.

So does that mean that bronze spears and swords are superior to iron ones?

My mind just exploded.

Urist McStarkRavingMad: Can't you see it? We're all being watched by humans controlling our every action! Urist McSplodeyFace died because THEY WILLED IT! And the booze?! THE BOOZE!  It's only a bunch of ones and zeroes! ONES AND ZEROES zeroes and ones! ZEROoneoneoneZEROZEROoneZEROZEROoneoneoneZEROoneZEROoneZEROoneoneZEROoneoneZEROone! See?! Rum! Right there! Rum! Can't you see it in the ones and zeroes?! The rum isn't just gone, it never existed! And the food! The food was cooked without fire or ventilation out of brains and the zeros and ones! Even the food doesn't exist! WHY CAN NO ONE ELSE SEE IT?!

This... is what i imagine the dwarves who go insane suddenly realize. The meloncholic ones get suicidal, the stark raving mad ones are too obsessed with the food not being real to sustain themselves, and the berzerkers realize exactly what they're doing; they just want to cause as much frustration as payback as they can.

EPIC. Totally true. Especially with the Matrix tileset.

I get a surprisingly high number of fisherdwarves too, though they aren't all great, many are Competent or worse.  The thing that strikes me as especially strange is I seem to get more of them when I've embarked on a desert location... sometimes as many as half of a sizable migrant wave will be fishing or fish-related professions.  i guess either they pissed somebody off, or I did.

Whenever I decide that I won't fish at all in a fortress... well, that's when the hordes of fisherdwarves come. Like three in the first migrant wave, and it only gets worse.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: does anyone use castes

I don't have castes yet -- but I will soon! I like KoboldWarmonger's and HollowClown's ideas especially. Will implement now.

anvils. think about it for a second. kind of like the question of the chicken or the egg.
The first anvil was a beard, of mighty proportions.
More like the bottocks of a goblin/elven deity.
'Twas a noble.

MORE ON TOPIC --The Truth about Dwarven Parenting:
Contrary to popular belief, dwarves do not have sex through the air. Dwarven children are like moles which pop off the mothers and then mature (similar to the koobish). This is why dwarven parents are so damn protective of their kids, keeping them on their persons constantly -- the kids are actually them. However, this also explains why they are used as meat shields -- just like using your arm to block an attack to your heart.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 24, 2012, 07:28:24 pm »
Decided to dig out an underground lake next to the meeting hall. Y'know, a water feature.

Except for that I had no floodgates. So the water just kept coming.

Posted this in facepalm moments. And then decided to drown the entire fortress...

Currently devising as many water death traps as I can.

any ideas?

Edit: A water source just vanished. What the hell.

1871: You see a pileon and comtemplate the humourous nature of tiles allowing infinite creatures in one tile so long as no more than one is stood up. This genuinely happened and I almost commented on it.

1872: Cats and elephants look exactly the same size to you.

Creative Projects / Re: Pen & Paper RPG. Reactions?

Definitely following this. An RPG contained in a single book? I tried to do that, but it failed after about half a campaign.

Posting to watch and offer encouragement!
