This depressed me a little, I thought this was the place to share it. Pastor says to give 4-year-old boys who act camp "a good punch". If they have a 'limp wrist' then break that wrist to send the message to 'man up'.

http://duanegraham.wordpress.com/2012/05/03/squash-em-like-a-cockroach/

Quote
During a sermon extolling the virtues of North Carolina’s Amendment 1, a proposed constitutional alteration that would superfluously ban same-sex marriage (it’s already illegal in the state), Pastor Harris said the following (please, watch the video clip and read the transcript):
Quote
So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, “Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do,” you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female, and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid, is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed!

Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist! Man up! Give him a good punch, okay? “You’re not gonna act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male.”

And when your daughter starts acting too “Butch,”  you reign her in! And you say, “Oh, no! Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play ‘em!  Play ‘em to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl, and that means you are going to be beautiful, you are going to be attractive, you are going to dress yourself up!

You say, “Can I take charge like that as a parent?” Yeah, you can. You are authorized. I just gave you a special dispensation this morning to do that. (Laughter)

Ummm, no, you cannot authorize child-abuse. This pastor is preaching illegal activities.

Star Blazers was pretty good when i was 9 years old, but watch Uchuu Senkan Yamato with subs instead. Star Blazers was heavily chopped up and bowdlerized. Anything deemed too mature for a retarded 8-year-old was removed (e.g. they blow up an alien base and Star Blazers adds additional dialogue claiming all aliens escaped on shuttles rather than got killed, and re-show footage of a single fighter taking off to justify this), and all the characters were renamed stuff like "Derek Wildstar" (Kodai Susumu in the original).

Plus, you miss out on the most humorous 'antics' of the robot in the dub version. I'll leave that to your imagination.

It might well be the most watchable anime from the 1970's, along with Lupin III

Explaining the 1970s stagflation
Further information: Nixon Shock
Following Richard Nixon's imposition of wage and price controls on August 15, 1971, an initial wave of cost-push shocks in commodities was blamed for causing spiraling prices. Perhaps the most notorious factor cited at that time was the failure of the Peruvian anchovy fishery in 1972, a major source of livestock feed.[16] The second major shock was the 1973 oil crisis, when the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) constrained the worldwide supply of oil.[17] Both events, combined with the overall energy shortage that characterized the 1970s, resulted in actual or relative scarcity of raw materials. The price controls resulted in shortages at the point of purchase, causing, for example, queues of consumers at fueling stations and increased production costs for industry.
Theoretical responses
Under this set of theories, the solution to stagflation is to restore the supply of materials. In the case of a physical scarcity, stagflation is mitigated either by finding a replacement for the missing resources or by developing ways to increase economic productivity and energy efficiency so that more output is produced with less input. For example, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the scarcity of oil was relieved by increases in both energy efficiency and global oil production. This factor, along with adjustments in monetary policies, helped end stagflation.

Quote
Carter [...] took office during a period of international stagflation, which persisted throughout his term.

But the most important element in the war against inflation was the Federal Reserve Board, which clamped down hard on the money supply beginning in 1979. By refusing to supply all the money an inflation-ravaged economy wanted, the Fed caused interest rates to rise. As a result, consumer spending and business borrowing slowed abruptly. The economy soon fell into a deep recession.

Yeah, that's how you combat runaway inflation, by crashing the money supply. Note that this started before Reagan.

The other fix was more drilling by OPEC nations, nothing to do with America.

EDITL Note the hypocrisy of the pro-Reaganites blaming Jimmy Carter for the 1982-1983 recession, but giving Reagan credit for the resultant drop in inflation. Both things were due to the fed. reserve actions of 1979.

The synopsis for the fish manga sounds like a parable for leaving the "nest" of  adolescence for the wider world. So it's your basic coming-of-age tale, but with talking fish?

EDIT: Recently watched 5 Centimetres Per Second, that was a great film, and just saw Kure-nai, I was a bit iffy after the first few episodes but it got pretty good as it went on.

LMAO! Alabama put harsh anti-immigrant laws in place, now they're suffering financially as a direct result.

Quote
“I was really embarrassed and overwhelmed,” says State Senator Gerald Dial. “Mercedes has done more to change the image of Alabama than just about anything else. We don’t want to upset those people.” Dial, a conservative Republican who voted for the law in June along with every other GOP state legislator but one, started having second thoughts soon after the statute went into effect in late September. Fearful of being deported, immigrants fled the state by the thousands, resulting in labor shortages.

The main thing I'm wondering is what the hell would possess you to mash three series together like that.  You can't even give the normal "budget" answer because messing around like that would cost even more.
They were selling the series as a weekday syndication deal, and, at the time, you needed a minimum of 65 episodes to get that. That's why they mashed the three together. I agree with your friend about the lawyer stuff. Harmony Gold are using their dubbing rights to the 1982 Macross to block imports of everything up to Macross: Frontier, which is the main reason you'll never see an English dub of that. Basically the Americans are claiming their 1982 localization rights gives them exclusive rights to make sequels to Macross for perpetuity. Since this was thrown out by courts in Japan (yes, Harmony Gold sued Japanese studios in Japan to stop making sequels to their own series), Macross continues to be made there, but it's still contested in many countries.

Their sequels so far have been Robotech: The Movie (a "robotech" redub of "Megazone 23", YET ANOTHER un-related series / characters), and "Robotech: The Sentinels". Which uses re-cycled footage from Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada AGAIN. They even re-use the entire wedding footage of one couple to be another couples wedding !! The more recent remake is "Robotech: Shadow Chronicles", which is kinda ok as Robotech sequels go, but a bit boring. It only features mecha and character designs from Mospeada, since that's all Harmony Gold have undisputed rights to now.

Could always make him watch Macross the english version

Which is three space animes turned into one. The issue is that it may have too classical voice acting for anyone who isn't old.

That's Robotech if you mean 3-in-1. If you say Macross in English, you're talking about the 2006 ADV Dub, or Macross Plus, which was also Dubbed. I have some nostalgic memories of Robotech from my youth, but rewatching it in it's entirety, the fusion of 3 un-related series introduces too many plot-holes and ludicrous dialogue. Most of the voice acting isn't too bad though.
Macross was before Robotech i believe and Robotech was a spinoff of Macross

This is my all-time favorite series (mostly from nostalgia), so i can fill you in on a lot of the history.

Macross came out in 1982, Robotech is not really a "spin off", it's a re-dub / edit of three unlrelated series to be in a single continuity, made in 1985. The only link is that all three series were published by Tatsunoko, whom Harmony Gold had a business arrangement with. The three series dubbed were Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. I find the original Macross and Mospaeda more enjoyable than the mash-up versions, but I have no great interest to see the original Southern Cross, though I might check it out someday.

A LOT of plot holes are introduced by doing this. The ADV dub in 2006 is the first fully-dubbed English version of the 1982 "SDF Macross", which stays true to the original source. I hope that clarifies the situation.

Spoiler: some plot holes (click to show/hide)

Also, Minmay's singing being popular in Robotech makes you think everyone's eardrums were damaged by being blasted into space. My friend -  who'd only seen Robotech - said "I loved everything except the songs, which I blame on it being from Japan". I played him some of the Japanese minmay songs and he had a sudden epiphany / realization - none of the Japanese songs made it into Robotech, probably so they didn't have to pay royalties. Another reason to avoid Robotech is the damn songs. In Robotech she even promises to sing a song "my boyfriend is a pilot", but you never hear it (she sings her "main" song again instead, yet again) You actually hear her sing the other song in Macross.

Well, I don't really mind romance if it's there, but I've watched too much where it's the main focus. Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you tried out Aria: The animation? I watched that recently and thought it was an excellent non-romance slice of life show. And very unique as a "sci fi" series where there's no post-apocalypse or killer robots going on.
