DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread
« on: April 25, 2013, 06:29:44 pm »
I can't seem to find any entry on the wiki for phases of the moon. Since my current fortress is intermittently harassed by werebeasts, this is a nuisance.

-Where do I look to find out what the current phase of the moon is in fort mode?
The top right tile, above the z-level indicator shows the moon phase.

-Does the full moon occur at the same time every month? (As in, if it is full on the 16th of the month, it will be full on the 16th of every month)
I think so, but I'm not sure.

Every friendly civilization sends a caravan once a year. Every caravan includes traders, pack animals, and the humans and dwarfs bring wagons and guards too. The size of the caravan depends on how much profit the traders make at your fortress, so if you're successful you can see multiple wagons per caravan.

And you were faster yourself. Ninja'd by the OP, that's a new one.

DF Suggestions / Re: Magic Levels
« on: April 22, 2013, 09:23:03 am »
This is planned. Cado's Magical Journey is a fairly long example of what's planned for this kind of thing.

No, Threetoe stories are not to be taken as power goals. They are at best brainstorming and at worst just a story that Threetoe wrote.
If you look at the bottom of each story page, there is an analysis by Toady and ThreeToe about how elements of the story could be incorporated in DF. Not exactly power goals, but pretty clear plans.

This is substantiated further by Animalmen which Toady even after the story was written outright said "I don't know what to do with them".
I'd like to see a quote on that. Root had animal people as independent, but not very powerful factions. There's lots of stuff to do with them.

BTW, why has it been 2 years since Threetoe's last story?
Was the concept dropped or something?
Zach: "I mainly do story rewards now. I'm thinking about doing an amalgam of story rewards for the next one."

Well then: are all stockpiles set to allow the maximum amount of pots?

You just assign the jobs, they take the picks themselves.

Dwarven, elven and goblin sites aren't visible in adventurer mode yet. You'll be able to visit them in the next release.

397
No, but they'll become very very slow.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Boats and sea travel?
« on: April 19, 2013, 02:40:44 pm »
It's planned.

Quote
TERRAIN/WEATHER/SWIMMING/FLYING/BOATS: Boats of some kind might go in early to make different regions more accessible, but you won't be able to be a pirate or an undersea civ for quite a while. Rivers freeze with daily temperatures instead of seasonal temperatures. Realize river and ocean squares when you visit them (forcing town layouts to adapt). Realize interesting canyons and so on in such areas. Track hurricanes and other major storm/disasters, in-game and during world gen. Thunderstorms with lightning strikes (with corresponding lighting effects) and hail. Levels of rainfall. Eating snow, making snowballs and picking up hail during and after hail storms. Tornados with wind flows that push items, projectiles and creatures. Proper eclipse modeling. Tides, deep oceans and pearl-diving, etc. More intricate interplay between cliff faces, inner rivers and outer rivers, using Z coord and waterfalls.

Yes, you can export the seed, but using it in the next version won't generate the same world.

Oh, I missed that edit. Most likely, no, you won't be able to use the same world or regenerate it in the new version. The changes are just too massive. The quicker bugfix versions after the big release will be save compatible with each other though.
Nooooo.... D: Man, That should be something to work on, older compatibility with saves. Kinda like (please no hate, this game is so much better.) minecraft. I dunno how easy it would be though. :/
There are too many things that have been changed in the world. Toady isn't just adding some new minerals or animals, he added sites for every cilvilization, remade combat, there's succession, multi-tile trees, tracking etc etc. Bugfix releases or updates with just a few new features like minecarts are always save-compatible, but ensuring that for the big ones would take months and that's not worth it.

Maybe the guy got lucky, maybe he was more experienced than the average bandit, you never know for sure in adventurer mode. Him being a hammerman definitely helped since blunt attacks aren't blocked by armor.

Vampires don't get hungry, and their thirst is red.

Yeah, I found it. It doesn't make a good throwing weapon as much as it does in real life. What is a good long range weapon? (not bows, they slow me down too much)
I like to throw arrows and bolts. No reload time, but just as devastating as firing them.

Aaaand another. I can take on packs of wolves, alligators, and vampires literally without taking a scratch. But I went up against a hammerman and got pulverised. I didn't even get a hit in... wtf?
Who'd have thought that well-armored enemies with years of combat experience would be tougher than wild animals and unarmored cowards? ;)
Bandits can seriously mess you up. Sneaking, ranged combat and fighting in groups are good tactics.

PS: You can edit your posts with the modify button to the right. It helps with avoiding double posts.

I just pulled the latest version from git, loaded my save and it gave me the game over message. :(
This isn't a very satisfying end to my adventures.

Saves don't work between versions. Neither do saved profiles.
Ah, I should have known better. Thanks!
