DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Kind of Bolts
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:52:02 pm »
Difficult to say. Silver is heavy, and as the result of a !!SCIENTIFIC!! investigation, approximately equal to candy in terms of bolts. Since silver is alot cheaper, silver is the best. Most bodily damage compared to anything else.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tantrum Training

The main thing here is that you're goint to have to have some method of pushing their buttons. Yoiu need to be able to make them unhappy at a moments whim, then strip that unhappiness from them. Relatives are good for aking the unhappy, but perhaps something else more easily rectifiable.

How about this:
1. Add no uniform and set it to replace clothes.
2. Station dwarf in room of animals.
3. Tantrum and kill the animals.
4. Take dwarf out of squad to give him clohes and reset happiness meter.
5. Repeat.
6. Unleash on Goblin armies.

To sum up, naked army dwarf killing puppies.

Have you ever had the misfortune to not have a shirt? It make you pretty damn upset.

Read this without a shirt.

Though I suppose your point is that I at least own a shirt.
The homeless people in my street own shirts, for christ's sake.

I think that the positive moods could use a revamp, I mean:
"come on, thats a nice waterfall, but your wifes dead man. You love you wife, been married to her for 80 years, have 9 kids together, doesn't that bother you?"
"I guess so but LOOK AT THAT STATUE, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A STATUE OF SUCH QUALITY?!?"
"Yes, yes, I saw it yesterday"

Holy hell, I come back and theres bizzare comments regarding androgynous 13yr-olds everywhere.

The grow ray is a terrible idea, and the poll only gives it artificial legitimacy. If it can't exist, it pales in comparison to slightly possible ideas such as nuclear mustard gas bombs, or sentient AI hive minds. A poll on where in canada to go, or one about the uniforms, might inspire actual debate.

No. Ethical can not be a Secret Service. The intelligence body will be held closely by the heads of the government. Absolutely no coup de'etats.

Someone start work on the mind-reading devices.

They will at first notice a long upward trek, first past a gold bridge over a river. The path is abrupt, and it is clear that workers labored to remove the smooth inclines that once made up this hill.

A long approach from the north, They first notice a large, flat, grassy plain, broken by the periodic tree and the man-made structures of war. The signs of sieges past, blood everywhere, freshly set traps,  walls designed to funnel invaders onto traps, dominate the area, increasing as they approach the fort. They notice several of these traps haven't been emptied recently and goblins, populated by either dismembered and rotting, or begging futily for release.

When they get closer a odd blue pyramid, made of microcline, about 5 z-levels tall, can be seen. A entrance on the south side is guarded by traps, and inside look shows why. A massive tomb to the dead king, the entrance is coated with troll blood, the beasts attracted by the furnishings inside.

As they get closer a imposing figure in the sky appears. A tall tower, with a short wide base, dominates the scene. Massive piles of the dead decorate the nearby area. A platform is atop the tower, and at the base is a large hole, the purpose clear.

They notice a long bridge over a second, large river, and a series of waterwheels, with a long horizontal axle leading to a gear assembly above a opening and resumbably more axles, brining power to the depths of the fort. A boarded up staircase is here, clearly unused for years. The river is spattered with blod that doesn't seem to leave, and several bodies, stuck presumbably on some underwater debirs, litter the river.

When they go over the bridge, they notice a ballista pointed right at them. If this is not enough to put fear into their hearts, heavily armed dwarves patrol the area, waiting for invasion. Marksdwarves crouch behind the fortifications of the large tower. In order to enter the fort, one must pass these vigilant dwarves.

A large number of grazing animals are here, grazing on ever shorter grass. It is clear that they are rotated yearly, and as it is fall, that is coming soon.

A abrupt drop appears here, more signs of laborious dwarves who worked hard to keep this fort alilve. This forced detour brings them past more traps, and onto a smaller, lower down plain that makes up the entrance to the fort. A blood-soaked pit drowning with the sell of rot is here, filled with dog, troll, and goblin blood. Positions often taken by practicing marksdwarves are imprinted on the grass.

The entrance is absoulely covered in bloodm and a few bleeding cats.. A large awning covers the entrance, its purpose unkown to the rural dwarves. A path, paved with gold and ash, and lined with stome traps, lead into the fort. At the front, a mass of bears and dogs, many injured, many not, stand bloodthirstily over the entrance. There is no path through the entrance that does not take one through the thick of these beasts.

The entrance branches off in 2 directions. one is long and winding, clearly for merchants, and the second is short, and absolutely covered in traps of various kinds, clearly for other types of visitors. ioth paths lead to the trade depot, made of platinum. Fromhere there are too paths, one that leads to the General stockpile area, and one that leads deeper into the fort.

Following the later path brings them to a single staircase, and tens of dwarves scurrying along their buisness. The second floor has various workshops. The third is metalwork, and is fairly organized. The fourth is a empty Great Hall, covered with the annals of dwarven history. On this floor there are two things of interest, a path leading to a bloodcovered, spiked room, filled with miasma, with a large hole to the surface in the ceiling. The earlier hole is now obvious. The second item of intereston this floor is a large mining zone, filled with magnatite, aluminum, flux and lignite, a true dwarven goldmine.

The 5th floor is odd, various repurposed rooms. A prison stands to the east, empty at the moment. The bloodstains of a recent executions still there. To the north is the police station, where police recruits train to be able to capture criminals quicky. To the west is a beautifully decorated room, a old vampire's chamber, its former occupant now gone. From here, there are two paths. The one to the north is a long path, decorated with engravings, leading to a well brining water from the caverns. The other path leads to the kings rooms, holding the new occupant, the president of the republic.

The next floor hold the destination of the migrants, the hall. It is a confused scence. Engravings are enverywhere. Tables placed periodically are filled with loitering dwarves. Some moss grows on the floor. At the east end, a artifical waterfall brings constant mist.
Bleeding small animals walk by, a victim of the awfiul dust on the staircase.

The migrants, have arrived.

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: gateivory, the land without ore
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:29:01 am »
Alright, the long in coming 3rd installment is here! I noticed I have fewer pictures, so sorry. Less interesting though.

29th of Limestone: Summer has drawn to a end. The leaves have turned brown, and the dwarves start staying inside, well, by subterranean creature standards, I suppose. Dwarven children go back to school, uh, by school I mean a loiterer in the great hall ranting at them while everyone else works. I’d tell that guy to bug off, but it keeps the tykes busy. Besides, he reminds me of my professors.

I’ve been haunted in my dreams recently.  I see images of a army of darkness marching in the fort, easily wiping our feeble military off the map. I see terrifying forms slaughtering at random, with each swipe they strike a dwarf down. They head upwards, annihilating any in their path, while I and others hide huddling in a corner, waiting for the onslaught of death. As I am not the only dwarf haunted by these dreams, I have decided to halt work on the rapier. Better safe then sorry.

A few dwarfs have decided to officially rename themselves. The CMD is now +!!Scientist!!+ (what a strange name, I thought, but it’s rude to say.), and a swords dwarf is now named tahujdt. What is wrong with people?

I have also been consumed by the thought of my legacy. My term is already half over, and I want to stamp this fort with my name, so that all future overseers will be forced to acknowledge me. I want to utilize the power of the water fall, to execute prisoners more efficiently. First step will most likely be damming the river, or at least diverting it. If I can’t accomplish this myself, I’ll wait till winter. Of course by then, I will have already accomplished the needed infrastructure.

As almost the entire supply of females who haven't rejected me is gone, I've been very alone recently. This hole doesn't make me feel much better, and despite my comparitively lavish accomadations, I am unhappy.

Oh, and I managed to make Gulf shut up. I’ve set him smoothing things. Hah, That’ll show him. Without the constant comments, he’s beginning to be less insufferable, so my rage is soothed.

I was alerted by suturers that we lack material for suturing. Damn. I wonder how to remedy this, when I remember that that’s something elves bring. A quick look over their unmoved corpses confirms that yes; there is some material, though not alot. A quick looting solves our problems.

We have begun to run out of materials, and so I hope that the dwarven caravan will relieve us. In the mean time I've taken afvantage of my training to try to sqeeze more use out of everything.

This Stonecrafter reminds me of someone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh yeah! That hero from the ambush. I put her in a squad, since she wasn’t yet.

Well, that goblin has finally been chucked in a arena, so marksdwarf training finally started. It is limited though, since quivers are not always available, so some cannot practice.

27th of Sandstone:
Military material is very low so I am ramping up all military related production. This means leather, so many puppy’s are being slaughtered, since we don’t appear to have cats. That fact scares me more then anything I’ve seen here so far. A catless fort is truly a cursed fort.

As if to make up for that mistake, migrants have arrived. God, I wish I could butcher migrants. All my problems would go away. Except training, but live-fire exercises with migrant "volunteers" would help that too. Well, at least now I can replace some of the less competent marksdwarves with more competent migrant workers.

The military is depressing me. Many don’t even bother to have their stuff on them, and training is non-existent.

I realized the cause of the lack of progress in making things, there was no tanner’s workshop. I banged my head against the wall a few times, to relieve strain.

If I hope to finish my design before winter, a brave dwarf is going to have to pierce the river. I wonder who that will be. :D

Cage Traps are being set up everywhere, and a lack of cages becomes apppearant. Hunters have, in slightly related news, been very active. God, how I long for the days back at the capital, where I could eat meat every night.

Migrants have arrived, bringing the total to 107.

Progress has been made in various areas, but life is slow. I hope for more excitement soon.

WHY WON’T YOU DWARVES TRAIN!?! TRAIN YOU FAT BASTARDS!!!
 >:(
28th of Timber:
Merchants have arrived, bringing much needed supplies. Sensing this, a dissector wakes from sleep, withdrawing from society.

Shockingly he claimed a craftsdwarf’s shop, and ran off grabbing things. Considering how low we are on various supplies, I can only hope it works. I think that without metal, we have to rely more on other materials, so we run low.

Well, I was looking over our craftsdwarfship, and I spotted a few recurring themes, including Thelire, the elf eaten by a dragon, and Ingiz Tourrope, the dwarf slaughtered by a Minotaur. I never heard of these guys. These Rural dwarves have some weird ass folk-stories. Homage to one of our own appeared, one to a “Frontestro”, related to the Frontestro living here now. It is a wonderful thing that he has not been forgotten, and that they will keep his memory alive. Here is the related enscription:

…Although, his corpse is still at the bottom of the waterfall.

I should do something about that.

A ban on statues is in effect. God forbid our enemies grab hold of our statues, for everyone knows that a army if goblins wielding rock statues is truly to be feared. Can the mayor even do that? Good, school was so much simpler.

Did you know we have more metal armor then leather? In a place with supposedly no ore? What, The, FUCK!?!?! I really need to find a new outlet for my rage. Messing with Gulf is just not cutting it. Well, I’ve ordered melting of many of the inferior metals.  Perhaps I can still use metals then.

The amount of meat in the fort has increased during my reign. How awesome. 8)

Zas has started his construction. Materials are not interesting

Well, fall ends, and The long slog that is winter is apon us. As my last season here begins, I will hope to leave it in the best possible way. The plans for the next season will bring all done so far to fruitation, and the last season of my reign wil be the most sucessful yet.

Fort as it stands :

Some of my dwarves seem to get cranky over one minor thing going wrong. I look at their status and they're chowing down on legendary meals (I make a priority of selling any food less than masterwork), drinking amazing booze (I keep a variety of hooch in stock), dining in legendary halls (smoothed and engraved, just like the tales of old), slept in bedroom like personal palace, admiring artifact statues that I put in high traffic areas, then they go all dwarf-berzerk over not having a clean shirt.

"Oh, woe is me, whatever shall I do about my lack of shirt."
You're a CLOTHIER

This is why I'm saying: rock clothing. All this organic clothing business is a disgusting elfism. Rock clothing's good for posture, among other things, er, probably.
Have you ever had the misfortune to not have a shirt? It make you pretty damn upset.

Ya'lls gaytime jokes cracked me up so much.

I laughed so hard I cried a little. XD
Don't encourage them...  :P
Are you one of those people who don't like gaytimes? What not fun about a good gaytime? A little gaytime never hurt anyone.

We've decided on having the test colony be constructed in Canada, though I think we've come to any solid conclusions on where exactly in Canada. Or where exactly on Mars we will be attempting to land, for that matter.

Shouldn't that be the focus, then?  I think you can survey mars in google earth...
But not geological deposits. We need someone on that. Besides, it won't exactly be relevant for a few years,, unless you have the needed money right now.

10767
If I end up going with you, I'm gonna wear WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT. I look nice in a black+red hoodie, a red T-Shirt with black stars, and black jeans with black dress shoes. Also glasses. Because face. And eyes. And glasses-good face.

BRAINFREEZ. YOU IDEA IS TERRIBLE. There is no such thing as a ninja suit. Uniforms are unexpressive. I vote that BRAINFREEZ not be an ALTERNATE A.I. AT ALL. If such thing happens, WE WILL ALL DIE.

I second everything this man has said! I also vote Brainfreez stays under constant watch guard. By soldiers. Told to use lethal force if Brainfreez gets near anything important.
I approve this. If I die horribly, it will not be because of brainfreez.

So I pose a question. Does anyone else think that Dwarves get upset too easily? I myself find that they do often in any fortress I make. And on top of that their depression lasts for a great majority of the year. I wouldn't be phased by this if they didn't start destroying everything in their little crybaby tantrums. So the question! Answer it if you would.
Edited for grammer.

No, not really. They do have a number of specific things that cancel out unhappiness, like valuable furniture on display, or keeping unhappiness at bay, so most see no problem.

Might I ask why your dwaves are upset?

I personally prefer military uniform.
