DF General Discussion / Re: How did you find Dwarf Fortress?
« on: July 08, 2012, 12:05:14 am »
TvTropes article on stupid AI descisions, of course. I loved literally every word of everything written. Then I read the avtual article on DF on tvtropes. It sounded so fun, and so complex... I resisted the urge for a while, saying "what about school", and "it sounds expensive", and "you'll just get bored with it like you always do." I have ADHD, and no matter how much I loved a game, If I played it for too long, I grew bored. Then I went to the sight, just as .34 had been released.

I tell you, I havent gotten bored at all in dwarf fortress, partially because I'm allowed to work on, say, new things for my craftsdwarfs to do, then to the worn-out clothing problem, then to mining, and so on. I can suceed at some little task, then move on to the next thing, cause so much work is nescasary, I never run out of things that need work. It DOES have a problem with leaving some longer projects unfinished, but I can get to them when its needed.

Of course, the randomly-generated randomness is awesome. A giant jumping spider attacks a hunter, injures her and kills her baby. BUt, as it finishes the baby off, the mother suddenly springs into action, perforating it with bolts. Unintentional baby armor, i guess. Still, Jumping spider meat for all!

Granted. Its so pure, and amazing, that it jumps out of your hand, round-kicks you in the face, snapping the spine, jumps on a flaming horse, and kisses your girlfriend as it rides into the sunset.

I wish for a yacht.

Shameless necro here - don't want to see a project like this dying.
As self-apointed necro police, i'll allow it.

Granted. It lights your butt on fire, and and you realize that you dont know how to use a jetpack. As your butt burns, you crash into a wall.

I wish I had telekenetic powers.

YES. THIS. Rivers are evil. I'm doing great, adventuring and sucessful and stuff. I come to a river. I try to walk to the other side. BOOM, I've collided with a wall, brain bruised. dead.

When you order a dwarf to kill a merchant/diplomat from your civ, that dwarf will become an enemy to the civ, at which point everyone that is still a member of the civ (in the beginning it should be everyone) is an enemy. However, because he betrayed the civ government but not the local government, he is still a member of the local government and therefore killing him makes the killer a traitor of the local government and a hero of the civ government. This escalates uncontrollably, where dwarves are killing eachother left and right and becoming traitors to either the civ or local governments, and then those that kill another dwarf who is a member of both governments still will become renegades that have betrayed both governments, at which point it's legally safe to kill them. Members of the same faction (of which there are four) will be friendly towards one-another, and it is possible for them to continue living together.
Yes, this I know. I call the groups renegades, loyalists, seperatists, and citizens. Right now If you REALLY wanted to you could create a seperatist fort, by having a group of dwarves kill a caravaneer each, and then be somehow seperated from the local population. Then, everytime a caravan comes, repeat with new dwarves, and seperate them into new group, rinse repeat, congratualtion. Migrants would be problematic, but you could just lock them away until it's time to train them into members.

Also, a dwarf could and Should have differing levels of loyalty to each individual set so if a conflict were to arise, instead of the bizzare situation we have now, dwarves could "choose sides", so if a civil war DID happen, dwarfs wouldn't spotaneously decide to murder each other.

Civil war is a nice idea. I suppose you could manage that using your set system, with a dwarf in government belonnging to a specific faction, and if their ideals amd actions were too oposed, a civil war might spark. As of right now the king is universally beloved and everyone does as they are told

I have no clue. Welcome to the fortress. Be back with tales of your bitter failure. FPS death is essentially one of two things, inevitable, and preventable only through in game actions, like atomsmashing garbage, and the mountains of old clothes.

So let's review.  Everything < Serrated steel blade traps.
Fixed.

Tbh it doesn't make sense because dragons are flying creatures, and I thought flying creatures wer- OH WAIT A MINUTE.. DRAGONS DON'T HAVE WINGS.
and, ironically, cave dragons, who in their description are listed as being twisted into not having fire and wings, DO have wings, albeit functionless ones.

Vampires could make darn good soldiers if they didn't randomly kill children and squadmates. Perhaps you could put vampires into a reserves squad, isolate them, and release only when there's danger? It's not so easy to isolate them when they won't station, but maybe...
\okay, one, dont double post, just edit and add on to current post, unless someone has commented, then go ahead. Secondly, use of the burrow system can easily isolate vampires, though military use is limited in this matter. burrow are used with [w], use them to assign dwarves to a specific area that you define. I had a vamp who stayed there regardless of how thirsty he got. But when I added beds to that area, well, random dwarves showed up and decided that vampire king was a goddamned title.

Many make them manager/bookkeeper, as this requires no new materials, but they do eventually slow down due to lack of alcohol, whih the dont drink anyway, so there you go. Anyway, they're sttill pretty fast then. They don't get unhappy, and can go insane unless you make it VERY nice rooms. THey also require clothing, which wears out eventually, and they get upset about that. And Thirst. But, if you want them happy, convict them of one of their crimes.  They'll get happy they avoided punishment.

So there's no other reason for an assumed name right?
The only reason I could think of is to avoid the forced migration to your death-trap of a fort. As this is post-migration, no.

It seems however there's no reason not to convict your least useful dwarf when someone murders out of a tantrum. I haven't seen any consequence to convicting the wrong dwarf.

The convicted gets a hugeass bad thought.
Yeah, I once convicted a random bird person, a wren man, i believe, of the kings bloodsuckings. victims were happy, but unfortunately, your justice doesnt beat on animal people. Also, you can convict hypthetically almost anyone, even animals and the dead, hell, even the victim, but dwarves are smart enough to know that somethings rotten in denmark, and they all get bad thoughts. also, conviction is great for getting tid and isolating tantrumers for they hurt someone or themsleves. Actually, its because of this I like stark raving mad dwarves, cause they last the longest, giving you vital time to calm down your dwarves and prepare. berzerkers should be killed, and the melancholy will do it themselves.

Also, I thiink toady fixed the nickname bug. I always retitle my blood-suckers as vampires. Except the king, who already had vampire king as a title.

Even more fun for my tantrum spiral, she's a speardwarf and a large number of my dwarves are military members in one barracks. (there's not a lot of sane adults left and I NEED a military)
Easy enough, as long as there is a justice screen, send her to be hammered, or at least convicted. A single dwarf wont be the difference between failure and temporary victory

While it is a remote possibility, she might not be your vamp.  See if she claims a bedroom, or includes thoughts about eating, drinking or sleeping.  Walking casually through the midst of a zombie attack is the most precise method of identifying them, but they can be difficult to set up (depending on location) and a false positive on your part gets messy with that method. ;)

Also, in one of my worlds, the vamp did not start worshipping the god that cursed her until about 40 years after being cursed to roam the night in search of blood for desecrating that gods temple.  She was a faithful worshipper after that point, however.
Forgot about that, yes, My method is enable alchemy on anyone who has ever had a thought about eating or drinking.

They dont necsasarrily need to worship the god that cursed them. Who told you such a thing is impossible?  I've had atheist vampires, though how to not believe in god if he has personally cursed you is beyond me. No blood-suckers gve the same message as a vamp, it'll be listed in combat logs if it was.
Also, *grabs party hat, member sock of identification* Congrats, Welcome to DF, and the forums! Here's your sock. Don't lose it, and if you do, get it back by any means nescasary.

EDIT: Damn ninjas, editing for accuracy.
