DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Danger! Hidden Fun Stuff!
« on: August 07, 2015, 11:15:46 am »
Well we knew it can be as hot as the HFS in Phoenix, Arizona, but usually it was at least safe to walk the streets.

But now for the first time I've encountered something that may change that...

Ah, so I CAN view the whole thing at once! Thank you!

Also displaying up and down stairs as ladders is an excellent solution to the funny looking staircases they could otherwise be. Now if only I had built my ramp stairwells in a way that could be displayed to possibly make sense, but I didn't... Ah well. XD

Is there currently a way to show more z-levels, because my 8 z-level tall fortress can't be completely shown currently. Or is there a way to change what z-level is being viewed? I've noticed it doesn't currently update with the game, anyway...

Also the current reflective textures on stone block walls are a little too intense for me and look kinda weird in large, complicated structures, like this.

That's almost all various stone walls and floors with some silver road and frozen river. It's just /too/ shiny for me.

Edit: Completely forgot to praise how awesome and amazing this thing is. I am so very happy and thankful you are making a new beautiful 3D visualizer, and especially with a height ratio like this, because stonesense makes everything look short and fat to me. Dwarfy, but not what I was envisioning. Also I would love to be able to use perspective viewing to show architecture better, and this looks extremely promising for that! Thank you so much, and keep up the great work!

Here's one that amused and confused me. Especially since neither dwarf should be involved at all.

"Oh, another one of my hammer dwarves named his wooden shield something. Two words? I'm curious what it means."

"I guess I'll go look."

"Wow... Hey Stukos, I think you're missing a 'k' in there."

I might watch it. XD

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Rotten Forgotten Beast

I've had an FB wandering around in caverns beneath my fort for a long time, it's responsible for the death of two GCS that I only noticed were down there when it was killing them, (a third died to a cave ogre in similar fashion, and before that I'd never even been blessed to see one) and I have occasionally noticed very large amounts of miasma emanating from places I zoom to when checking combat reports.

Recently I saw it moving around the cavern and realized that the miasma was coming from it in an incredible plume that trailed out wherever it walked.

I of course examined it and found:

Which went on for seven pages. Seriously, seven pages of scars! The last one was pretty much full too.

So I guess this FB is poisoning itself constantly when attacking other creatures and rotting every external part of itself away over and over. Or maybe there was another one that caused that and it has never recovered. I wonder how much impact this has on my framerate.

I was wondering that, but instead of trying that I just relieved him of the position for now. I'll put him back on when the stress drops way down from the 80,000+ it is now.

To answer the OP again, this seems like a bug relating to how nobles upgrade - the game probably just lacks a sanity check to ensure that only YOUR baron is upgraded, and just blindly upgrades ALL barons to dukes, so it's probably just a minor oversight bug that can get solved fairly quickly, and was never quashed because Toady never thought to test it.

Upload a save before you go killing anyone to DFFD and Mantis, in any event, so that this can be fixed.

This seemed the most likely cause to me, too. I didn't think to upload it, but all three are still alive so I can. I'm using unmodded raws, however I am using a lot of DFhack for things like workflow, tweaks and such. It seems unlikely to me that it should cause that particular problem, but it's still important to note.

As for mandates, I've mostly been meeting them, only ignoring a few more difficult ones. My Captain of the Guard keeps being outraged about the scarcity of chains and cages, however, and he's upwords of 60,000 stress for it. I have 10 usable justice rooms, how many does he need to calm down? This is very annoying currently.

Sounds like a bug. Even if the other two baronies were eligible for upgrading to duchies, doesn't the outpost liaison have to be present to perform the upgrading? So it probably wouldn't happen at the same time.

Post a bug report, then apply magma to the situation before it gets worse.

Actually the liason came, said we were being upgraded, and the upgrade happened as soon as he left the map. All three were upgraded at the same time, so yes, I'd say it's probably a bug.

And killing them doesn't fit the flavor of this fort or my playstyle, but the number of mandates may be too insane... I may have my hand forced at some point, if I keep playing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Three barons to three dukes
« on: July 02, 2015, 05:46:06 pm »
I just had a rather horrifying experience in my current fortress. Let me set it up first.

Some time ago my fort met the requirements to become a barony, and I made my bookkeeper/manager/broker the baron. Not long after that I got a message that one of my dwarves inherited the position of baron of some distant land. Then a while later another dwarf inherited and I had to make room for a third baron.

Just now, however, I was informed that I was ready to become a duchy, and was pretty happy about that.

Right up until I noticed that ALL THREE barons were now dukes, with lots of new yellow needs. Seriously? Two of them don't even rule here, why must all three be upgraded?

So is this a bug? Has anyone else experienced this? Am I just really unfortunate?

Is it definitely confirmed that marksarves on a patrol route will not dash off for melee when they run out of bolts? I'm tired of trying to find solutions on my own for this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Weapon strapped on
« on: June 30, 2015, 09:18:10 pm »
One of my hammerdwarves has sensory and motor nerve damage in one arm, giving him an impaired grasp, from a werelizard biting and shaking him around by the arm (it only bruised with the bite, so he wasn't infected). After confirming that he wasn't infected, I returned him to his squad, and only later realized that he wasn't gaining much skill because he couldn't use both his shield and hammer. In fact, when I inspected him, I saw this:

While his shield is in his left hand, his hammer is just strapped to his chest, I guess. I don't know how that happened or why, and I'm guessing he can't actually hit things with it, but perhaps it's time to retire him to some kind of workshop work.

The reason I'm posting is to find out if this actually CAN be used as a weapon, or if he's a hopeless case, or if maybe I should remove the shield and just give him a hammer. Also I've never seen this before in game or on the forum, and wanted to know if anyone else has.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: War Dogs are sparring

I also suspected the combat lethality, actually. And okay, the sparring's probably not unusual either. It was just weird to discover both at once.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / War Dogs are sparring
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:30:25 pm »
I was recently looking at my combat reports when I noticed that there were several unusual ones. Specifically, "The War Dog (name) is sparring." Only one is really recent though.

This I'm pretty sure is a result of the fact that I've assigned a war dog to each of my hammer dwarves (yes, I understand there are reasons not to do this, but I did it anyway for fun, except that they unfortunately burrow with the civilians during alerts.). I figured that maybe the dwarves accidentally hit one and it showed up as a sparring message, but when I looked it didn't really confirm or disprove that:

Okay, well maybe I'll wait for new reports like that in the meantime and try to find out for sure.

But then it gets even weirder. One of the war dogs that had previously been involved in a sparring session now encountered an Ibex, and the following report was given:

The dog apparently was still trying to spar, at least for one attack. I don't know why it snapped out of it afterward, but I wonder whether the flags can be messed up even more than that.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit:
Here's some of the older reports, however I can't see what's in them anymore.
