I got silver xbows in unmodded games, too. Pretty sure I bought them from a caravan.

Sometimes you can live at peace for years before even the first ambush comes. Donīt get too careless, sooner or later youīll get a siege.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf in Cage
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:00:44 pm »
Build the cage like Met said. (b)uild - (j) cage - (x) expand the list and it will show you which are dwarf cages.

Instead of attaching them to levers(which can take quite a while), (q)ery the cage, press (a)ssign (? I think itīs a?), then simply unselect the dwarf who is sitting in it - he will be freed instantly.

And dwarves caught in cages can happen when they are running away from invaders, too. And it will always happen if the cages are webbed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is the bad part of vampires?
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:03:00 am »
^ This. I had great plans for my vampire(s). But after a while they become so slow during work that they are almost useless in practice. And if they are not already highly skilled in a job it will take ages to train them to legendary. They do make great bookkeepers though since they spend most of the day in the office.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Floorplan for...
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:14:20 am »
I like to put a panic lever into my main feast / meeting hall (connected to drawbridges which seal the inner fort from the outside). Because there will always be a couple of dwarves hanging around there in case I need a fast shutdown. And some kind of backup system is good to have, too. A while ago some tantruming guy deconstructed the ONE lever right before a siege arrived...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Night creatures: how to become them?
« on: March 19, 2012, 04:02:38 am »
Werecreature: get bitten by one.

Dunno about the others. I donīt think you can become a bogeyman, for example. Well, probably with using that bodyswap thingy in dfhack.

DF Suggestions / Re: I am not afraid anymore.
« on: March 19, 2012, 03:53:32 am »
Why so complicated? Bogeymen are just another race who happens to roam the night and prey on solitary adventurers. And since they are pretty invincible if you are not a skilled fighter the average citizen fears the night and being alone.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Vampire Paranoia - Myths and Facts

Hereīs a 16 page long thread about vampires from the gameplay board:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101181.msg2996828#msg2996828

Anyways, another fact is that vampires donīt bother about undead and vice versa. So if you notice some guy who happily continues doing his job while the rest of your fort is being slaughtered by zombies... (had that happen some days ago)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dorms vs sing
« on: March 18, 2012, 08:03:24 pm »
I give everybody 1 rock coffer and 1 rock cabinet, if only to get rid of all the stone. And guys I like get a private dining room with chair and table, even if they donīt need it for their position. Also helps a lot if you burrow your legendary workers in a small workshop + living quarters cluster.

smooth and carve the wall for vampire detection

I think glass/gem windows are much better for that. Fortifications donīt add to the roomīs value, while with a window connecting two bedrooms you get the neighbor watch effect and also improve two rooms with one single item.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Metal Arrows??

Human caravans, goblin archers. Donīt bet too much on them, youīll get enough arrows to supply some few archers but not a big squad.

They care a lot. A dormitory should be the last resort if you donīt have enough rooms for the last migrant wave and donīt want them to sleep on the floor. Having a nice room and some furniture will also let your dwarves recover from tragedies much faster.

Vampires donīt drink booze and water, usually. After a while they start working slower and their thoughts say something like "starts working slower because of the lack of alcohol" even though your stockpiles are stuffed with it.

Then again I had guys I was sure about being a vampire because of that behavior who suddenly died of thirst. Maybe their curse was suddenly lifted and they died of dehydration right away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves Won't Bury the Dead
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:59:36 pm »
Burial seems to be a bit bugged currently. For my dwarves it a) sometimes takes ages to discover dead dwarves, even when I tell them to deconstruct the bed they are rotting on. Then b) it takes ages until they actually carry the body to a coffin. Maybe a new bug? In 34.01 and 34.02 I never really had this problem, but now in 34.05 burial keeps dragging on really often.
