Here we go. I'm just figuring out the Fort right now, so updates may be sporadic.
Well, I made it. While I normally don't like traveling with humans, the merchants were nice enough, and we made good time. As the new overseer, I've decided to focus on getting this fort into a defensible state- from what I've seen, that is somewhat lacking. The military is well enough equipped, but leaves some to be desired. Off to work! I just hope they'll be nice to me- this is my first job as an overseer...
Well, I think I'm starting to get a feel for the place. While I still have absolutely no idea where the weapons are hiding, or why some of them were 'forbidden', I've gone ahead and ordered a stockpile for them constructed by the barracks, to facilitate efficiency. I've also constructed a stockpile for mechanisms, and have ordered more made- while I still do not know the location of the bridge levers, I think that some traps should help, and at the very least I can order levers made. While my training didn't prepare me for this, I feel that I'm doing well, and I have successfully dealt with some dwarves that wanted to dig deep, possibly suicidally deep. I shut down their idea, but I know it may be necessary later. I hope my luck continues
For the longest time I had no idea what to do with this place- did I expand the military, did I improve the farms, but then I realized that there were some hatches I hadn't noticed before- leading straight outside. Realizing the danger of this, I've decided to reinforce the exterior defenses of our fortress. However, I quickly realized that the levers sitting in the dining hall were confusing, and probably mis-assigned, so I've decided to rebuild them. Not as two levers, but one- progress is swiftly being made, and once we finish the bridges, work can begin on the entrance to the outside world. I think I might be getting the hang of this.
Well, the work continues. My fortification work is in progress, and I'm trying to make the fortress look a bit better. We aren't done yet, though- I have a great deal more work to do before I feel complacent. On a side note of interest, one of our dwarves, Babylon, has been possessed and claimed a craftdwarve's workshop it should be interesting to see what he produces.
It would appear that I forgot to write an entry in my journal last month. I have to be sure not to slip like that in the future. At least not much happened that month other than churning out new iron armor (breastplates and helms) and silver warhammers for my melee dwarves and hammermen. I'm working on making some steel to to improve the weapons of the axe and spear dwarves. I've also been working on fortifications, specifically the ones just inside the entrance. I've attached a diagram of them their current state. More work is to be done.

Well, another month has passed without incident. I've constructed doors to the various workplaces in the inner gate area as to better control traffic and possible invaders. I've also constructed an inner gate, so that the fortress may easily corrall invaders within the inner gates. It should work, but for now I have a bridge to rebuild- I didn't want to cut off traffic to the upper area just because of a siege... Though it appears that we've found a dead body recently, which makes me rather suspicious. I need to watch this group of dwarves carefully, civilized as they are.
Work is going well. I have the bridges under control and working, the forge will be making some new steel weapons soon, in addition to some iron serrated discs for the inner entrance traps to be constructed in the future. Our mechanic is working overtime- I've had to give him another worker to lighten the load. I've also moved a hammerdwarf to the marksdwarf squad, due to his persistent requests, and found a new recruit from one of the two waves of migrants this year. The booze supply will need to be reinforced soon, I think, though it's been holding up good so far. Overall, things are going well. The elves didn't even bother us that much, and the humans were friendly on their visit- we picked up some nice low boots, which I need to remember to give to the melee squad. We'll see how it goes.
Well, I almost slipped again, but managed to catch myself in time. I've finished constructing a few weapon traps with some large serrated iron discs to deter invaders, and have been re-flooring the entry with stone slowly, as well as having the main halls smoothed. I also noticed that some of our inventories were off, so I went off looking for the bookeeper. I couldn't find him, so I decided that I might as well give him new quarters. Some other dwarf told me that one of the previous overseers had told him not to be too concerned about accurracy, so I managed to find him and set that straight- I expect to see the accuracy of our stocks improve soon. I need to remember to give that spear out...
A caravan from the mountainhomes has arrived! I've just begun conversations with the envoy, and it seems to be going well. He asked if we wanted to elevate some dwarves to noble positions, but I wisely declined- I've heard what too many nobles can do to a fortress. On another note, I've finished the flooring of the entryway, and have begun smoothing more of the main floor. The military is training once more, and the fortifications are looking up- it's going pretty good. I've attached a rough sketch of the mostly complete front entry, complete with the caravan, which is hiding the other set of weapon traps.
The Entry:

Well, another month has gone, with more progress. I asked the mechanics to deconstruct the weapon traps, and the wagons were also deconstructed. This was annoying of course, and I had to explain to the envoy, and they left. However, after they left, I noticed several items left behind- I decided to let the dwarves pick them up, as the merchants weren't coming back for them. Also, I've reconstructed the weapon traps and begun flooring the trade depot area.
