DF General Discussion / Re: Is playing dwarf fortress ethical?
« on: January 04, 2018, 03:45:00 am »
If you think the sinple pieces of data being destroyed is a problem, then you need to join the jains and sweep the street as you walk along since you might potentially step on something miniscule and kill it.

I also think you should stop eating not only animals but plants as well since all plants have a infinitely more complex nervous system than anything in df.

In essence its not worth bothering over the quite simple points of data in any games we play.

Windows antivirus says createitem is a trojan in the latest dfhack alpha included in per. starter pack. False positive?

Goblins dont die of age so they tend to hold positions of leadership for long times.

I miss dfhack already but im having some fun not being able to just use prospect all before embarking.

Maybe you should only use dfhack for actual bugs? Cheating really makes games less interesting.

When I play 3000 year old worlds then the goblins have basically taken over large parts of what would be interesting leading to lagfest areas everywhere with all the trolls. Also the towers often contain truly insane amounts of undead. Not to mention most computers literally wont have the memory to run 3000 year old worlds and it would most likely crash long before its finished. Before I updated my computer thats what it would do loooong before.
Works fine on my computer and having it be a large/huge world tends to halt the goblin takeover, eg I haven’t had any issues with that. The only thing that noticeably impacts playability to me is save/load times, but I’m on a computer all day programming anyway so it never bothered me , even when streaming.

DF is 64 bit now, that is why it won’t crash anymore. It used to run out of memory when you did this but that isn’t the case now.

You seem to be right about the goblin issue. That said its easier to max sites allowed and increase the number of citizens. Then increase semi, megabeasts and titans and also max out caves. Then have ot running for 200 years only. You still get loads of history in a playthrough.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Weapon Trap Crash Question

I have not actively tested it myself. However earlier it crashed way before the massive amount of siegers had plowed in them then what my current fort have lived through. Seems to work.

I had just a bit under 100 mil at one point. 90% of it was in gold and silver crafts. Obviously the fort lagged like hell so I couldnt have been bothered to do more. Was few years ago and it was sieged at one point by goblins riding some 20 cave dragons. Ive yet to see that happen again.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Enemies with steel equipment?
« on: November 28, 2017, 03:34:20 am »
Dwarves and goblins are the same size, iirc, as I've killed goblins and worn their armor in adventure mode playing as a dwarf.

It doesnt mean they are the same size. Just roughly the same size. When playing a animalman in adventure mode you dont need the exact size to wear the gear. This of course mean they well could have stolen gear from dwarves.

Just mass make iron and steel armor/weapons. Sell it to all non elves. Since elves refuse to pick them up they will eventually be doomed by it in war.

There is usually a world cookbook thread around where strange and specific needs are met.

Many of the thougher cave creatures are building destroyers so you can put chairs at strategic points and have cage traps around them to lure and catch them. If you manage to tame them some of them are just better then above ground animals. Like the jabberers. Adult at year one, massive returns when butchered and massively increased value as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Rotting magma crab in magma
« on: November 26, 2017, 08:00:51 am »
I just had an unexpected problem which Ive never faced before. A magma crab went up in the middle of all my magma forges and smelters. Since they are at the moment pretty weak one of my furnace operators just clobbered it. Unfortunately parts of it fell into the lava channels and is spreading miasma all over. There is no way to pick it up since I lazily dug the channels out straight from the magma sea. I abused dfhack and autodumped the corpse since I couldnt find a solution to the problem and quite frankly hadnt expected the crab to rot in magma. Had there been any non cheaty solution though?
