DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Friendlies in dungeon

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I started out as an outsider?

I just lobbed the commanders head off with my steel halberd before he could react. Still got my reputation for it and the whole dungeon instantly turned hostile. He dropped his masterworked longsword, helm and breastplate all made out of steel.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Friendlies in dungeon
« on: December 07, 2012, 07:34:22 am »
So Im in a dungeon where there appears to be several non-hostile creatures. Including a commander and a captain. (There are also few hostile creatures). Are these bandits which dont recognize me as a hostile for some random reason?

When I reported kills to the commander he didnt say "thats good etc" and he also didnt say "foreign news dont help us". He said I love such stories. Also when I ask him about his profession and family he says I rather not talk about the past. So in essence can I kill him, take his loot and report his death to the joy of normal civilians?

If they play minecraft then you could tell them that Dwarf Fortress inspired that. Dwarf Fortress has also inspired a game called Maia which will be released sometime in January I think.
Here's the hyperlink to the maia site: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1438429768/maia

Not sure it inspired minecraft, but it did inspire towns and some other game that had gnomes instead. If you dont care about graphics and how hard a game can be then dwarf fortress is the game for you.

Whips are good at some creatures, mainly creatures with full armor of a good material or creatures made of really hard materials like bronze colossuses. Otherwise a longsword or morningstar tends to actually kill things faster for me and if you get to legendary on a weapon then you can kill most things with it regardless.

Dwarves are dumb and the military system, especially ammo, orders and armor/weapons, is currently not really working as it should. So much micromanaging has to be done it order for it to work like it should. My forts always rely on a loooong corridor of traps before the military is allowed to touch the invaders, that way I dont have to work as much when goblin christmas arrives. Its to bad the first two traps you can make stonefall and cagetrap, are either crap or far too good.

Cage traps opness is also attributed to a bug with no current good fix. The only cages animals can nibble themselves out of are artifact cages and not normal ones.

Channels are a bit strange when it comes to pathing. Sometimes your miners get stuck because they cannot understand how to get back if there are several channels in the way. Atleast that is what I have experienced. The issue normally is resolved when I give them an additional way out, such as stairway or grates.

The last thread with this title literally had Forts drowning in rain, as the result of major river set Forts flooding in monsoon season.

Glorious.

Cool. Would be even better if they were quick enough to wall the entrance in and live under the newly created lake. The city under the sea.

I make a bridge, link it to a lever and raise it. Then I make the vampire the only mason and let him build himself in under the bridge and drop it on his head. Always works.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Using artifact in artifact.
« on: November 28, 2012, 01:44:04 am »
Pretty sure that they make artifacts as finished goods and not materials to be used, like previously stated.

Fell moods make the dwarf murder the closest dwarf and use it as material to whatever its making, that can easily be much worse than losting an artifact. Have your forges several floors away from the butcheries, craftwork and leatherworks.

If your marksdwarves only hit one in ten then they are unskilled. Skilled marksdwarves easily hit most shots. Infact going marksdwarf in adventure mode is pretty powerful, although throwing is perhaps more versatile and fun. Killing stuff with random other stuff cant be beaten, especially considering that you dont have to muck about changing weapons but can use a sword and shield while still killing stuff with thrown bolts.

The upgrade seems to be irregular, because sometimes I have exported several millions and created more and I still only have a baron even though few years have passed since I got him.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Anti-Undead Melee Weapon?
« on: November 22, 2012, 01:02:45 pm »
If we are talking about bolts arent we going away from the melee weapon?

Battleaxes against thralls, because the sure way to kill them is to decapitate thier heads. Also battleaxes are perhaps the most dwarfish weapon.

Silver warhammers against zombies, because you dont want to cut off additional limbs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarf likes what?!

The more amusing ones are the ones who like vermin like rats, if you let them engrave or make statues they will create statues and pictures of rats. The problem with that is that many dwarves dislike one type of vermin and since there are few types of vermin its very likely that you will get many bad thoughts because of those statues/engravings.

Ive heard that a statue of a rat inside a room owned by noble who hates rats will actually decrease the percieved value for the room by that nobleman, although I havent verified it myself.
