DF General Discussion / Re: After 10,000 years.

From the worlds that I've generated in 0.40, it seems like the goblin civs whose demon masters die early tend to fare worse and not dominate the world. They're still immortal and have absurd overpopulation, but things like Dark Kobold Pits happen without a demon to whip them into shape. Maybe I'm only seeing patterns where none exist, though.

I think they can only root in soil. So if you keep them down in the stone layers, it shouldn't happen. At least I haven't noticed any worms in the dining room where I pastured my birds.

(Hey, I have a barren cavern layer in my fort too. I was actually relieved that I won't need to worry about mushroom trees growing in my wagon entrance.)
Does hair thread get put in cloth stockpiles? Because there's no mention of it in the stockpile menu and it's cluttering up my Farmer's Workshop despite a bunch of cloth stockpile space nearby.

Just did a quick test from current git source, and it works with 40.07 (linux). Great work splinterz!
Thanks!
thanks for the confirmation! oh it's all due to those df-structure guys, they had things updated crazily fast!

This is why I'm not all that anxious for DT to rely on dfhack. DT has a day or so of lag after a new release, we still don't have a dfhack release for any 40.X version. I can play just fine without dfhack (although I do miss digv), but playing past the first couple of migrant waves without DT is just too painful.

I don't think you're really supposed to play right after release, though, you're supposed to wait until all of the patches are in and *then* get off. I'm not going to do another DF play-though until Toady shifts to active development again, personally, because what's the point of exhausting myself playing this game now if I can do so on a more pristine version later?
Somebody has to play right after release, or bugs wouldn't ever be caught. There's nothing wrong with some people waiting like you, as long as a significant number are less patient.

In the Races tab, are the populations listed only for historical figures, or is it adding up the population from each site? Because it usually lists there being 0 trolls, but looking at individual sites there are tens of thousands.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?

I'm trying to kill a hydra, but I can't catch it. I brought a pikeman with me (the only other military unit I've found in this year 5 world). So we enter its lair and start to fight. Things are going alright; it can't seem to hit me. Then, out of the blue, it starts to flee. I noticed what it was doing too late, and it got out of the lair while I was starting to sprint. I caught up to it while at max speed, but then inevitably I got tired and slowed down. The hydra was still running away, so I let it go. I figured that I might be able to catch it by going back to its lair and waiting. Well, it did reappear after I waited for an hour, but then everything repeated itself. It ran away again and I couldn't stop it. I'm stumped. Beating the bronze colossus to death with a silver war hammer was easier.

I downloaded the most recent version and I too have been having world gen crashes. Garden of Gaia seems especially prone, crashing before ten years in most cases. I tried the population and frequency changes that Jeoshua provided, and that made no difference whatsoever.
Also, the errorlog is full of errors like this: "Unrecognized Caste Token in Body Transformation Effect: DOG_ARMORED_IRON:MALE" but for every other creature that should be armorable. I checked the raws and haven't been able to find the iron-armored versions of anything. Where are they?

Alright, I downloaded this a few days ago and I am liking it. But I feel I sort of trapped by the tech tree and rituals. The results are randomized on many of the reactions involved, and the only way to know what results I got seems to be constantly watching the workshops and checking the items within after the dwarf is finished. Is there a better way to determine this? Some way to make the game announce results, maybe?

If I think my fort is running well with a population capped at 40 (though of course it ended up a bit higher than that), can I now change the population cap to 80 and have migrants again? Or does the liaison stop checking after the cap gets hit the first time?

DF Gameplay Questions / What do I do with my caged human?
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:35:38 pm »
I'm pretty new to this game, as a disclaimer.
I had a bunch of goblins ambush my fortress while the human caravan was inside. I used a drawbridge to keep the caravan in and the goblins out while I traded. Then I let the caravan out, hoping the guards on it would kill the goblins. But somehow, in exiting my fortress, one of the human axemen got caught in my cage trap. He's listed as friendly in the units window. I tried assigning him to a pasture, but he just kept wandering away, so my dwarves had to keep dragging him back. That seemed like a waste of time, so he's back in his cage.
Anyway, is this a normal thing? What am I supposed to do with him?
