Cause you can stab a body part off :p

To the one that asked about marble, yes I did eventually find some. Although I had the same problem in a previous fort, and there was no marble at all (anywhere from surface to magma sea)

I use silver bolts anyway... I have a legendary weapon smith with nothing else to do, so instead of letting his skills go to waste, he can pour out the bolts until more weapons are needed. I can also buy out caravans fairly easily with the masterwork bolts, and use the slightly lower quality ones for combat. Seriously, at 3000 for 25 masterwork bolts, I don't need much more.

In regards to my original problem, I'm training up my armour smith on iron, to use with the lower level troops, then once he gets to a good level start producing steel armour, using only the highest quality armour for the dwarves (they've all got great weapons, since my weapon smith has been hard at work)

I did find a source of flux, so of course that problem is solved

This is over 40 vertical levels down, and with staircases staggered across from one side of the map to the other in places (I was worried about scary things coming from below). I'm thinking of having a cart only tunnel, and i'm literally just mining out the area for flux and flux alone.

If i'm to do the multiple marble stockpiles, how many would work for that distance, and do I put them up close to the smelters?

No one? Cause seriously, It's taking 5 minutes just to smelt one pig iron bar right now

Is there some trick to make this work?
I've got a set mail shirt/breastplate/greaves/guantlets/high boots and the dwarves won't put on their boots or gauntlets. I've got the latest version but haven't played for awhile.
I had a similar problem where they wouldn't put on boots or gauntlets. In the equip screen of the military I turned of wearing over clothes, so all they were wearing was the designated armour

Hey guys, just this guy again with more questions :p

Anyway, I've found some marble on my map (YAY, flux stones), so i've immediately set out my miners to grab me some and start producing steel (finally). All good, except the marble is deep down below all my smelters. What I'm wanting to do is to set up practically a vertical minecart shaft so shift the marble from the bottom up to my smelters so i can get a decent amount of steel pumping out. I have tried once or twice to get the minecarts working, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I have a space of about 3 high and 7 wide on the first floor, and from there I have pretty much as much space as I could want (I have room to make it go horizontally to avoid other designations).

Can anyone spare the time to try and explain this to me please?

Here is a picture of the floor I've got all my smelters on
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Where the x is is the space I have for the minecart, and yes, I'm at the bottom of the map. As I said, from there I can go anywhere on the next floor. This is also my first attempt at this layout, and as you can see, it's not great

I generally produce so many gems I just sell off the cheap ones to get what I want... I also have a stockpile of platinum bars right next to the trade depot, cause I don't see a better use for them other than perhaps some constructions

So heavier is better for warhammers. I have an excess of platinum, is it possible to make weapons out of that, cause that's one hell of a heavy metal

They even killed the children!
It's better that way.

But I love my children... they're all better growers than my farmers! If only they'd pick up a sword
