I love these kind of three-way river gorge maps. I like to construct a shaft down into the center of the gorge and then branch out into the surrounding cliffsides and construct my base there.
Also, I love to use DFHack in construction, via the digcircle filled # command. I make a main room for the center of the fort, then branch out on all sides with halls with lead to littler circles. Each sphere has a purpose; some are stockpiles, one is a dorm, another a hospital, one a dining room and the adjacent one a kitchen. It actually is pretty fun and it tends to leave you with quite some room left over. The only problem is, naturally, the inefficient use of the underground space, as you will have plenty of unrevealed tiles, and if a metal vein runs through a sphere, do you dare risk your OCD to mine it out?

I'd say no, but to each their own...

Below -80 for an embark temperature is fun.  You get no wild animals, no trade, no liaisons, etc.

It forces you down to the caverns for wood and water, at least, and frame rates are typically quite high.

I second this. It really makes the game unique and more cabin-fever oriented. Of course you're not going to find wood, so -80 and a volcano might be ideal for some people.

I also like embarking on oceans that permanently freeze, then building a fortress out of the ice. If you smooth all the walls, then it will remain even if it does thaw, which is pretty cool. A smoothed ice fortress can look really badass without the hassle of increasing the value of your fort so much you get invaded all the time. Plus there are things like penguins and walruses to capture.

I also like deserts, but only if the sand looks good on the minimap. Some of the sand colors are really jarring. Though I've had the most fun with frozen fortresses built into the ocean.

That awkward moment when you just start a fort, your dorfs are 6 z levels under the frozen sea when suddenly nature decides "lolwhynot" and it thaws

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Potential Trap and questions
« on: October 30, 2013, 06:25:50 pm »
I'm settled in the middle of a 3 way intersection river, with the river flowing several z levels down and the third intersecting by a waterfall perpendicular to it. I began setting up and then dug into one of the sides of the gorge, then built a bridge across the gorge and most of my fortress is on that side. The bridge is extremely close to the waterfall, so I was considering, what if when the water froze in the winter(which it does) if I built a reservoir around the waterfall and then set up a floodgate release system, so I could use a pressure plate or a lever to release the floods, and knocking any invading enemies off the bridge into the river or onto the ice several z levels below. Bonus points if they explode when they fall, uber extra points if the water freezes right as I release the floods, instantly killing the invaders.

How do bridges react to flowing water? Or ice on them for example? The bridges are raising bridges, not retracting. How would that function?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The day when...

Post something truly horrific, like this:

The when gobbos can dig through the ground will be a truly horrific day.

  • Learning from mistakes if first attempted assault plan fails badly
  • For instance, if many siegers are killed, caged, etc. in a given hallway, they shouldn't generally go that way again, even if that means building/climbing/digging

Try to keep it in that format.

The day when...

The beginning is nigh.

!FUN! is nigh.

Not that it never started in the first place.

!FUN! is eternal. Is infinite. Is never ending.

Immediately slaughter all the elves. Single-handedly. With his left front eye tooth. Only that tooth.

WWUD if Urist decided not to Recover Wounded even though the injured party is 100% crippled?

DF Modding / Flying building destroyer?
« on: October 27, 2013, 12:40:31 pm »
I'm considering modding one. it will be very dangerous, and by dangerous I mean !!FUN!!. Only a few questions:

Can building destroyers destroy raised bridges as well as lowered ones?
Has this been done before?
What animal should I mod it from?
How can I maximize the !!FUN!! it delivers?

Thanks! :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Boredom at the circus
« on: October 23, 2013, 03:20:10 pm »
Word of warning: clowns can spawn with webs or with deadly dust. Melee dwarves become mostly useless against these two types of demons; check which kind of clowns there are on your map before committing to any type of strategy that involves massive amounts of fighters. I may or may not be speaking from experience. Twice.

When I visited the circus after I quicksaved, I had around 4 or five webspinning clowns. Fortunately they spawn randomly each time.

Well, I got bored and decided to go visit the circus. I quicksaved with DFhack and then we broke into the circus. With 15 dorfs, most of whom were recruits. Needless to say it was a bloodbath

Regardless, it was just an experiment but got me thinking, what are some good strategies for dealing with clowns? I'd like to try some more legitimate strategies, rather than cheaper ones.

For a webshooter titan made of water, I would seriously suggest an army of archers. You won't be able to close to melee range without being put down like that again, but the beast is physically weak and very fragile due to being made of a liquid so a dozen or so archers might have a couple lucky hits and kill it quickly.

now a webshooter made of candy on the other hand...
