I was just visited by my first titan!  :D

It was a blob of flame with a broad shell.  It ravaged the countryside, setting everything on fire and approached my fort just after I closed the drawbridge.  As I sat safely inside, wondering how to handle this guy and watching my livestock burn to death, it died!  I checked the reports and it looks like he was breathing fire all over the place and was getting hit by his own bursts of fire???  A flaming blob died from fire then?  Okay...

Also, does it ever say when a creature dies?  From the report, all I can see it doing is fighting back and forth with one of my dogs and then the report just stops.  Is this the point in which it died?

Can I assign my current dining room to my mayor or will this prevent the rest of my dwarves from using the room?  Do I need to build him his own dining room?

@Clawless, l-lowercase L, to list the fortresses artifacts.

From the main menu?  Doesn't seem to work, and I don't see that option.

Oh, I see.  It appears once an ARTIFACT has been created, not necessarily a MASTERPIECE.  How do I view masterpieces?  They seem to be created quite regularly as opposed to artifacts.

Why is my craftsdwarf workshop filled to the brim with toys and none of my dwarves are moving them to the nearby stockpile with toys enabled?

Also, how do I find the masterpieces my dwarves create?

It's probably (well, almost definitely) better to just use wood to make charcoal, since I've very rarely ever even *seen* coal itself as a dug mineral in my maps.
Oh wow, I wasn't aware that it was so rare.  According to that quickstart guide on the wiki, it says to just keep digging exploratory tunnels until you find coal or lignite.  I've got plenty of wood, so I'll just burn it down to charcoal.

I'm starting to think the best way to learn this game is to just play with all of the setting and menus until it clicks.  All of these guides I've been reading are putting me to sleep...

Okay, thanks dudes.  I haven't gotten as far as mega-projects yet, I'm still trying to find coal for my metalworkers.  Guess I have to keep digging deep.

Whenever there are idle dwarves, isn't it true that they will throw parties and hold up production?

Advice required...

Here's my problem.  I can never get very far with my forts because I eventually end up with a ton of dwarves and seemingly nothing for them to do.  I usually designate and area for dumping or smoothing just to keep them busy.  Am I doing it wrong?  :(

Another problem:

I just encountered my first case of insanity.  I had a dwarf take a strange mood and claim the leatherworks workshop.  He sat there for seemingly forever, until finally he snapped and went crazy.  What should I have done to prevent him from going nuts?  What should I do with him now?  I had a couple pieces of leather sitting around for him to work with.  I checked his moods and it seemed like he didn't require anything.  Confused :(

My dwarves love dumping all of my cut gems into my garbage dump.  There they sit, and I'm ready to trade, but I can't retrieve those gems!  Could someone tell me how to remove those items from my dump?  Also, some of my crutches and splints ended up there too instead of in my hospital...

Then build more axes! You can never have enough axes. They're super useful too.

For example, today I noticed that the 2nd Deck Fire Axe bracket was loose, so I screwed it back in. Didn't have a screwdriver, so I used the fire axe. Worked a treat! Axes = screwdrivers.
ah yeah, that's actually something I was working on... just need to figure out how to start metal production.  I'm on the cusp... really, I am!  :P

Yeah, you don't assign items/equipment to civilians. They figure it out on their own.
Well ultimately the problem is that my carpenter is carrying the axe and building various things, and my woodcutter is sitting on his ass instead of chopping down trees.

how did you assign it to the woodcutter? woodcutters have an invisible uniform that conflicts with the militairy, causing them to do nothing. Same goes for miners btw.
Wait, what?  Well, I assigned the axe to my woodcutter via the military menu.  I have no idea how to assign items to dwarves otherwise.

And as far as this invisible uniform thing goes, I'm clueless...

Ugh I give up... after assigning this woodcutter the battleaxe and still not seeing it in his inventory, I located the battleaxe and it ended up in the possession of my carpenter!!!

Christ... think I'll wait for a version with cleaned up, more user friendly menus :(

How do I get my layabout lumberjack to snatch to damn axe from this guy and do his job?

Assigning a different weapon to your militia commander works definitely, but he'll have to wrestle afterwards. I'm not sure if he'll just drop it if you put him off duty. Your best bet is probably to make a wooden training axe at a Carpenter's workshop and use that for tree killing.

Uh... how the hell do I assign someone a different weapon???  These menus are making me cross-eyed :(  I hit 'm', 'e', 'W'... and then ????  I can't make sense out of it.  Enter on 'specific weapon', then there's a list of like 15 weapons including the copper battle axe that I don't want him to use, but when I hit enter on it, it vanishes and he's still using it.  So confused :(

What you're doing is assigning him the weapon with that menu.  Since he's already assigned the weapon, you're not seeing any change.

To deassign a weapon, use the arrow keys to move to the right until you're highlighting parts of the equipment (the third, rightmost column).  Use the up and down arrow keys to change which piece of equipment is highlighted.  When you get to the one you want to de-equip, hit enter, and the item will disappear from the list.

Now, assign him a different weapon, maybe a specific weapon (not the weapon you just deassigned!).
Hmmm I figured that much out, but the battleaxe ended up laying in a farmplot, unused.  Meanwhile, the woodcutter sits around with a thumb firmly planted up his ass.  Woodcutting is the only labor assigned to him.  I even went as far as putting him in my militia, assigning the axe to him, and he still refused to chop the trees I have designated.
