General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: September 06, 2015, 01:58:36 pm »Yeah, those are the sort in which one goes: "how can I remove these nasty words?" before doing anything else.thanks it was the (43,000-y) that was tripping me up. the instructions had me doing a weird table in order to figure out the equation but that way is much better.
So I would go, before anything else
X+y=43,000 Make this very clear for myself.
Yield = 0.02X+0.06y Doesn't require a step, but is good to do.
Yield=1520 To make it very clear.
0.02X+0.06y=1520 To make it VERY, Very clear.
X=43,000-y
(0.02)(43,000-y)+0.06y=1520
Then solve. The top bits will catch more people out than the bits I omissed, if they've studied, which you have, as the hour shows.
This requires more working than methods that might be suggested. As a rule, when one replaces numbers with terms in a question, more working is better working. I hate it too when people contaminate good clean maths like this, but OCD is more important than ability for these problems.

I'm going to put this interesting news here: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/30/436125678/obama-renaming-continents-highest-peak-from-mt-mckinley-to-denali
I just know people are going to come out of the woodwork to criticize it somehow.

« on: August 23, 2015, 03:00:56 pm »Decided to look up theories as to why the Native Americans (North and South) never advanced as much as the Europeans did.can i recommend the book 1491? the main thing is that they were advanced just in different directions to Europeans. think of the genetic engineering wonder that is corn and things like tension construction with suspension bridges.
First thing I found sounded reasonable, up until it started going on about how modern crops produce less than 500 years ago, and how the wheat chaff is toxic.
