DF Suggestions / Medical> Request Diagnosis
« on: April 21, 2010, 08:57:10 pm »
Hey, just one little thing that could make the whole medical system easier to use (and avoid some of the problems already there): Request Diagnosis as a menu option. It should still automatically be looking for injured dorfs, but you should be able to order them given another look if something is going wrong.

Today Sony's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update 3.21 is coming on April 1, 2010 and will disable the OtherOS feature!

To quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.

This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the "Other OS" feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here: http://us.playstation.com/support/sy.../ps3/index.htm

PS3 owners who have further questions should contact Consumer Services: http://us.playstation.com/support/ask/

I am fucking pissed. And no, this isn't an april fools prank by them, they are removing the ability to boot Linux from all the old PS3s that allowed it. Almost certainly in a (futile) attempt to curtail the potential for piracy via the recent exploits found..

Creative Projects / Adventure Game Idea
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:26:20 pm »
I was just watching Spoony's Ripper videos (as cheesy as the game itself was) and can't help but think a game that involves a realistic version of the internet as a major part of the mystery. Google searches, facebook, tweets, and all that. This would of course include building a great deal of webpages into the eventual game, but I think it could be pretty cool done effectively. Does something like this exist? Heck, it could even include FMVs put together as faux youtube vids, and think of the eastereggs and minigames you could fit in :3

Other Games / The Latest TIGSource competition entries
« on: January 20, 2010, 10:49:01 pm »
Hey folks, been going through the games submitted in the latest TIGSource compo, Assemblee. Quite a lot of entry (73 games!) and I'm slowly working my way. So far there have been a handful of standout awesome games, and among those what stood out to mention here: Bitworld, which is a 3D action game with roguelike aspects set in what is quite clearly an abandoned  Dwarf Fortress :D check out the thread over there. http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9701.0

Will post my thoughts on others as I go through them.

Other Games / The Organic Indie Pre-Order Pack is pretty sweet~!
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:51:57 pm »
Hey guys, cool deal for those Indie action game supporters - Wolfire and Unknown Worlds have come together to offer a sweet deal on their upcaming sequels - Overgrowth, the sequel to Lugaru and Natural Selection 2, the sequel to..well, you know - for 40 percent off. Best of all, if you already ordered one like me, you automagically get the other as well.

Also cool, both pre-orders get you access to the Alphas of the games and both are based on original engines and include complete editing suites to build whatever you want with them.

Related video is vaguely amusing.

Other Games / Unity Indie development tools now free!
« on: October 28, 2009, 09:42:05 pm »
Unity 3D has decided that $200 was not cheap enough for their pretty damn cool 3D development kit for multiple platforms, and today rebranded their Indie package to just Unity, making the set free. They're a pretty damn good engine that can run games out of a browser even in full glorious 3D, and they have some really impressive features (their graphics demos look almost as good as some modern shooters of the past decade). If you're working on a game project in 3D, definitely worth a look. http://unity3d.com/unity/

Other Games / The Awesome Mods Thread
« on: October 15, 2009, 07:13:56 pm »
I've been getting REALLY into a bunch of unique mods lately and thought a thread to share some of the more inspired works here would be in order.

First and foremost are the works of research team Chinese Room (http://www.thechineseroom.co.uk) who have been experimenting with doing things outside the norm with FPS engines. Best of these is their Half Life 2 mod Dear Esther, which is a very haunting experience. From the site:

A deserted island... a lost man... memories of a fatal crash... a book written by a dying explorer. Dear Esther is a ghost story told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly triggered by moving around the environments, making every telling unique. Features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack. Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it's because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial - What happened on the motorway - is the island real or imagined - who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all...

In a similar but very differently executed vein is their other Half Life 2 project, Korsakovia. It is likewise a horror-themed game but ore in the traditionally frightening vein than the eerie not-quite-right-ness of DE.

Korsakovia is an experimental mod about madness, reality and the end of the world. You play as Christopher, a psychiatric patient suffering from the rare condition Korsakoff's syndrome. Christopher believes the world has ended. His consultant neurologist, Dr Grayson, is beginning to believe he may just be right.

Last of their (current) projects is Conscientious Objector, a Doom 3 mod that speaks for itself:

Conscientious Objector is an experiment in two parts. Firstly, it attempts to keep all experience of playing a fast, action-packed game like Doom 3 whilst turning the underlying mechanics and politics on their head. In short, in Conscientious Objector, you get the big shotgun but it's only loaded with rubber bullets. You can shoot all you like, but you can't kill anything. Secondly, rather than casting the player as a hero, you get to play the lowest of the low: a convict being used because they are expendable, steered around the environment by an NPC who is not afraid of telling you he's rooting for the zombies.

Other Games / Interplay classics on GOG buy one get one!
« on: September 02, 2009, 01:16:06 pm »
Thought I'd post a thread up about this: GOG.com is offering a buy one get one free in honor of the company's anniversary, for all Interplay games in the catalog - classics like the Descent series, Fallout, and more. I'm personally all over this but I thought I would share - you can legally own an XP/Vista  compatible install of Fallout 1 and 2 for $5.99, this week :3 I'm having trouble choosing for myself since I already bought the Fallout games earlier.

Other Games / What will they make an MMO from next?
« on: June 09, 2009, 02:51:08 pm »
Seems Atari is hard up on cash. D&D Online is going free to play later this summer and in it's place in 2011? http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2879084/NWN-Online-in-2011.html#2879084

Hmmm. Not sure what to think. Hopefully Atari doesn't drag poor Cryptic under with  them after the aquisition.
