X3 is a first person space game.  That's about the only similarity it has to Freespace.  Freespace is a linear mission based combat flight sim.  X3 is a huge open ended space exploration and trading sim with combat.

You might as well be saying that Dwarf Fortress is just Diablo with more strategy elements.

I'd certainly say it's more accurate than calling it a 4X game but it indeed does not do the X series justice (I prefer 2 to 3 myself).

If anything it's a spiritual successor to Privateer and Elite but even that sells it short.

Edit: Anyone else giggle every time they hear how Kha'ak is pronounced in-game?

Sadly it's had like 5 patches and still is far from polished, probably because it's only a stepping stone sub-game to keep Kerberos financed long enough for their next big project

Of course, people might respond with "well, he was a jerk anyway", but hey, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that people tend to get defensive when their questions are answered with hostile rhetoric instead of a more neutral and informative response.

The secret is to go into town at night for these missions and just kill everyone in their sleep.

Of course then you're /really/ an enemy of the rest of the civ's towns but it's fun!

I'd say it's probably a bug but also not one as well. Very tough.
