Other Games / Re: OUYA (Open console selling for $99)
« on: July 12, 2012, 04:38:02 pm »
I know you can run Android games on a PC. Most computer users don't; thus, they're as well off as if they couldn't.
With or without that, my point seems about as relevant as yours.

OUYA is the Linux of consoles. Or, at least, that's approximately what they're aiming for. Different things for different audiences. People want the OUYA for different reasons than people want a gaming PC.
I thought Linux of consoles was Linux. Or rather Raspberry Pi, which is half the price of OUYA and runs real Linux instead of Android. I really don't see the same mindset that is obsessed with open source really gravitating to this at all.

https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_8GB?id=nexus_7_8gb

For only $100 more you can have a device that will play literally everything the OUYA can with a more suited interface (since all the games are designed for touchscreen anyway), Portable with it's own high quality screen, from a trusted hardware manufacturer (ASUS/Google teamup). Can double as your e-Reader to boot. Literally identical hardware specs except add a camera, HD touch screen, and battery to the bundle. Plus you can get one right now, no waiting for when they can build them.

Nothing about Ouya is really appealing when you know what else exists on the market.

I think it's just poorly worded on the stretch goals list. In the actual update where they announced it, they clarify:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/70755535/dead-state-the-zombie-survival-rpg/posts/252495

They say it's 'free for kickstarter patrons', with the implication being that anyone else can still pay to get it once it's released.

I don't hate expansions at all. I have problems when devs make something that most of the players (who pay double what the early adopters did) never have the option of purchasing, especially if it has any bearing at all on the story (it's not stated that it does, but whatever. This is the internet, never let facts get in the way of an argument).
They are not making it exclusive to backers. Backers get it to free because well they're helping the project exist in the first place. People who buy the game late have to pay for it. This is pretty standard - they want to encourage early backers, so they give rewards. That's kind of the entirety of every crowdsourcing project.

Since Ovo is posting all about it on various sites, I don't think you need to keep it a secret that he's the minecraft texture artist involved in the project :P I like his Rustic pack quite a bit (although I mostly use Painterly out of loyalty to my friend Rhodox and not wanting to waste already low performance on HD tiles)

Why do Kickstarter projects always do this? It's infuriating. Give them money now and you, along with everyone else who helped fund, get an expansion that's just for you. Buy the game when it comes out for more than double what the funders paid? No pack for you. I hate the feeling of not getting the complete game when I buy it, therefore I refuse to help on principle.
You don't seem to get it: without the early funding, they can't make the expansion pack at all most likely. They reward their backers by giving them that for free, and in turn they get to make the content. The Expansion also won't start development until after the core game is released. I'm not sure where the problem comes in - do you just hate the idea of expansion packs in general, because that's what it sounds like.

Other Games / Re: ADOM: Ressurection - Crowdfunding
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:08:50 pm »
Eh, I had a very long and possibly quite whiny post, but I'm going to condense it into this :

1. I don't like Biskup's attitude, from reading some of his comments from before and during the start of the crowdfunding campaing.

2. I respect his intentions to do with his IP as he pleases.

3. I really hope this project does not succeed because I completely disagree with his own evaluation of the alternative cost of his time and the general pricing method he is using.

4. It might be good if this succeeds because we might get better games with more sensible pricing and desired end result.

This is in the ADOM indiegogo project's description :

    - New stable releases for all supported platforms (Windows, Linux, MacOS, Amiga, NetBSD, FreeBSD; Android and iPad/iOS are going to be stretch goals). Operating systems have evolved since 2002 and compatibility is becoming a serious issue.
    - Bug fixes for every bug we can find
    - Game balance patches
    - More elaborate interaction for many things that are currently only handled superficially
    - UI improvements to bring ADOM up-to-date with the progress the roguelike genre has made, to be decided upon based on recommendations of players in the forums (e.g. colored message, some kind of auto-exploration and others)
    - A series of magical statues distributed across the dungeons
    - A roster of new named random boss monsters with special powers
    - Exciting new graphics for the title screen and some quest-related events
    - Audio for sound effects and music for the game areas and important events
    - A freshly revised manual

In comparison this is taken straight from Toady's july update:

June:      $3599.86
May:       $4814.94
April:     $4623.70
March:     $6777.02
February: $12586.51

Total : $32 400

And you are welcome to go through the change log to see the major changes we've gone though since 0.34.1

If I'm going to pay someone to go back and fix up his old work, it's got to be the IVAN guys.

Toady only really has to pay for himself out of those donations and even then he's not exactly living a lavish life. Dr Biskup is paying 4 people to work on this full time for a while, and also working on another project at the same time.

I'm  not sure how it's a scam, he's pretty upfront with what he plans to deliver. It's no small task digging into 8 year old source code and then adding to content, modernizing the platforms, etcetera. There's also the addition of 3 more staff members (co-developer, music composer, and artist for a few select screens and icons and such). This will definitely get funded regardless of whether you think it's a scam of course. It's already at 4400 after about half a day.

Also @Graven: He intends the $50k as a joke. Hence why it's $50k. There is a stretch goal to make the game actually open source, though.

The earliest builds of Bastion I saw were done with images out of the ADND Monster Manual. Not even joking. They hammered out the mechanics first and the rest could fall in place later.

A really good idea is to build this in an easy to use existing engine - Unreal or Unity work REALLY well for building stuff quickly with excellent toolsets.

Still insulting to the intellect of the players and the idea of freedom of choice - maybe moreso with the way the Reject option turns out.

SO I revised my donation. Again. Back to 100. Because I cannot resist the siren song of civilization-making.

What I'm curious about is just WHAT I'm getting, in addition to the alpha/beta/full-game and civilization-creation?

Like, will I have to donate an extra 15 dollars to get a poster of Shooks art? Do I get the book? Music? Confusion?

I don't need confusion.

I already have that.

Pretty sure the Kickstarter blatantly spells it out in the pledge tier description: 'Everything Above'

Other Games / Re: Starbound - A flat yet infinite universe.
« on: June 20, 2012, 12:33:33 am »
Relax people, games take time, sometimes people choose to do things more quietly, not really a big deal. Sometimes they also overestimate  how much time things will take - for instance ARMA 3 was supposed to hit community alpha for July but pushed back to Fall recently. They're also not taking preorders for Starbound and I think they're wise not to at this phase of development.

Lower your expectations and go do something else, the game will come out some day most likely :P As a small team, it's probably best if they focus most of their effort into making the game rather than promoting it.

« on: June 18, 2012, 08:16:28 pm »
I've been liking the beta more than most MMO betas I've played but I'm still not quite there on it - I still don't know if I want to play $60 + also $15 to play this. The world is cool! The combat feels nice which isn't a surprise since I also enjoyed the fairly similar system in Age of Conan, where weapon swings are actually modelled correctly - no swinging a sword at a group but only hitting the one who is currently selected. I like that.

Receiver is immensely hard but I kind of love it. The aesthetics, the roguelike design, the complex pistol mechanics, and the enemy damage modelling all feel pretty nice.

Is there a way to gain access to the alpha, beta, and full version of the game without donating? I don't think I can spare any money to this product, but I am willing to help out.
I can haz free game plz?
I was just inquiring if there was another way to get the products. Just all. I don't expect to get it for free; I just can't pay for them.
Not sure what LD's plans are for  that but many products have had preorders on the site after the completion of the Kickstarter campaign. It's basically the same thing as donating, though.
