Procedural generation has never not been disappointing. Big-budget titles have never been known for being innovative.
The first sentence here is the most ironic thing said on the dwarf fortress forums ever.

The second is wrongheaded in every way, this game is made by like 10 people, thats lightyears from 'big-budget'

b2p + sub to do anything cool is a complete dealbreaker imo.

Did a fresh install of the new build and it tells me the index file is missing or corrupted but the file is defs there. Hmm. Redownloading to try again.

Update: redownloaded pack and it still occured. Downloaded DF separately and extracted over the one included in the pack and that fixed it.

The problem is that something is using an absolute path. If you pay attention to the error log, you'll notice that is trying to read files from Michael Madsen's documents.

I don't know who Michael Madsen is, but I'm pretty sure it's not me.
This exactly this

A heads up to my fellow bay12ers, GreenManGaming is doing a sale over the weekend; 22% off code. This can be used on both Fallout 4 and the Season Pass. This is good until the 26th. From all reports, GMG is pretty legit, but you won't get the steamkey until release.

Code:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

*Edit: forgot to add code.

Confirming GMG is a good vendor I've bought a few games on preorder there and while they can't always get the keys delivered pre-release you get them for great prices. Their VIP section always has good prices (Witcher 3 is $26 right now for example).

They'll also drop you a few cents for short game user reviews in your account credit although its not compatible with coupon savings :P

Theres a lot of depth that I miss from the original games but there's also a shit tonne of waste in the design as well. More complexity isn't always in service to a games design. In fact it rarely is, good game design is usually about trimming the fat down to what makes sense for the project scope, ambitions, budget, etc.

And yah this thing being teased is 1000% XCOM, the logo even looks like the Alien faction logo from Apocalypse.

Everyone's favorite Caves of Qud creature, the twinning lamprey, returns in the hanging hills of Sproggiwood! Everyone rejoice!

Quoting to signal boost, Sproggiwood is cool and needs your support. Launching on steam soon. https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/17110-sproggiwood-releases-on-steam

Should throw some screens in the OP for those who are too busy or mobile to video. I tend to prefer to check screens to vids myself even though I'm at my desktop. Still going to check it out mind  but something to think about :P

Other Games / Re: Are there any Steampunk MMO crafting games out there?
« on: August 27, 2014, 02:35:24 am »
There was one in development that was very inspired by Puzzle Pirates and stuff, lots of crafting systems based on puzzles. Sadly, that came to an end when the main developer got in a bike accident and died AFAIK. Took months for the beta community to hear about that, it was real weird.

To be honest, the idea of people effectively paying to playtest gives me a vague sense of disapproval, though I couldn't really place it on anything. I kinda want to say why not just have people be able to pay from the very start of development? It's effectively a kickstarter - paying to support an greatly unfinished product. Why didn't you use kickstarter, if you wanted guaranteed purchases before 1.0 release, and release the alpha to them to test and enjoy, when a successful kickstarter may spread the word more?

I have a feeling you talked about this before, but a cursory search via keywords on the weblog found no results.

Don't want to sound belligerent here, but words are not my forte.
My understanding its less wanting playtesters or money (they have PLENTY of free playtesters I can assure you, across many forums - Something Awful basically made Dredmor's polish possible) and more that people have been consistently begging them to release an early version to play. People are hyped up, so they are giving people access.

Yeah, unfortunately, going from regular game to dev is like going from regular person to a public figure. Suddenly you can't state your opinion without possible repercussions.

Good essay about how a tiny bit of niche internet fame makes your every waking moment under observation. A cautionary tale using Phil Fish as an example but applicable to just about anyone.

Still need a bit of work - we can build a base on mars but not intentionally move or destroy a few boulders? - but it is promising.
