There is one important factor of DLC that gets overlooked a lot: designers would be laid off between projects if not working on extra content after their core work is done. Artists, writers and stuff get done months before the game is polished enough to release generally. So some level of DLC is probably necessary in this age of shrinking budgetary margins. Some is definitely gross but it's something to keep in mind. Even on-disk DLC can be stuff that people worked on AFTER all their work was done on the core game, due to the length of time it takes to QA and certify a game for final release.

Subscription and a cash shop?

Hark! Listen to my words, puny mortals, for I forsee small server populations. This is the word of Nobody, for the bird is the word.
That's all MMOs now, sadly. The Subscription part usually lasts 6-12 months tops though before the gates open and I would probably bet good money on the same happening here if all the resources of EA and the biggest IP in the world couldn't hold out.

So hey, they released the new trailer (with celebrity voice actor David Bradley of Game of Thrones/Harry Potter fame) and suddenly they had a few days of really solid sales putting them within 100k with 9 whole days left. This is going to get funded!

The trailer kinda looks pre-rendered in spots, the way the camera is moving in the first person shots is highly un-natural to gameplay.

It's very pie in the sky but their video is not very good and it really doesn't seem like it'll make it.

Firstly, Matrix is swimming against the current on general pricing trends.  I understand why: y'all do mostly strategy, with a lot of historically focused titles...  That wasn't exactly a large market even before the DudeBro Console influx skewed everything towards dumb shooters.  A lot of people either can't grasp that you're catering to a small customer base, or don't care to understand.  It boils down to getting caught in the crossfire between Steam/GOG/Humble sales and common mobile pricing.  That makes Matrix's games look quite expensive by comparison, plus a lot of folks won't make a distinction between "don't like the company's prices" and "don't like the company."

This whole 'it's strategy so it won't sell' concept falls apart completely when you remember Paradox has their games on Steam. Crusader Kings 2 regularly goes on sale under $20

Welp, our crew hit a good oxygen planet and we thought we were well off..and then we lost all our armor and a bunch of hunters showed up. 1 HP left and we're surrounded still.

Goonswarm itself is actually rather bloated, the really truly amazing part of that is the leader. If Mittens decided to quit EVE, the CFC would implode within a matter of months.
Eh, Mittens does way, way less than you think. He is really good at delegating.

Goons have lost leadership before and recovered  just fine mind. This isn't the first goonswarm nor probably the last.

There's a demo version of Approaching Infinity on the kickstarter for free download. While it definitely has a lot of the same ideas and mechanics (an understatement even), it's definitely not running on stolen code. The whole thing is a lot slicker usability-wise than Prospector ever was and things are just different enough that copy-pasting code would not really be a plausible scenario. Almost definitely someone who played Prospector though.

So, shitty for everyone but long time veterans.  Gotcha.  EVE continues to show that it has the shittiest community of any game.

The main powers in EVE are outside communities forming in-game. They will rebuild their same numbers immediately and immediately conquer everything again. It's a no-gain situation for CCP. The game will still be too cutthroat for the average player and so not only will they not gain many new players, most of the people who have been working as long as 10 years(!!) to build up their resources will quit.

Thanks.

I guess the fact that that game is still going means that it's fun.  Maybe I should check it out.
Yeah it's alright. It would have been better served as an offline/co-op game than MMO probably.

Actually, copyright applies to unique fixed expression (written text, a picture, a recorded song) NOT characters or settings. Not that it stops some people from trying, or flexing their legal muscle (maybe they won't win, but they'll try to bankrupt you anyway, and the courts will help them).
Tell that to the people who have tried to make fan art or such and sell it.
That's trademark. Trademark is not Copyright.

I am using this thread to post about a game I think is pretty neat so far but don't care enough to make a thread! Extra Solar is this weird ARG-like thing where you remotely control a rover on a distant alien world and take photos to unravel the mysteries there, while also uncovering a conspiracy to hide things from you. You can check it out at extrasolar.com

There's some f2p transaction stuff but none of it is super important, although you can take photos only once every 4 hours which I think is a way of abstractly simulating the lag between earth and space so I don't mind it. You can pay to do it once per hour, among other things.

Ahem.

A multiplayer only game where you play as a either a ninja-esque guy...Or the enemies, who have guns.

It would be focused on paranoia, where the ninjas are near unable to kill the soldiers face on. Lights could be broken, which you would then need to repair with a ladder and say, a toolbox.

It would be completely randomized each map, and would be teambased. Comm chatter and such would be vital.

Now go get me a bucket full of money and some programmers then it shalt exist.
Except for the ninja part this sounds fairly close to Spies vs Mercs in Splinter Cell

Soooo..... Morphballs huh? And you are even going to call it a morphball. Really?

i was surprised to see that too, i hope they dont get sued by Nintendo..... e.e
Unless there's a patent filed I doubt it's possible.
It would be a copyright issue, not patent, and you don't need to file copyrights.
I don't think a morphball qualifies for Copyright. Copyright CANNOT apply to gameplay mechanics ever. I mean I only have like one course on copyright from film school but my understanding is that there is no way for Copyright to apply here. It's either Patent or nothing.
