Hmm, never read the readme before.  I better uninstall quick before it destroys my hard drive and way of life.

I don't think they'll use a barrel out of a food stockpile link to brew.  It has to be a furniture stockpile.  I use two links to the still.  One for plants, and one for pots.  To keep them from using my few precious barrels.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Embark sites
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:59:40 pm »
I love aquifers.  Also I try to embark across as many biomes as possible.  And some trees at least on part of the embark.  Rationing wood sucks.

Lately I've been embarking by the ocean.  The waves are nice.  And I don't like rivers.

I like warm to hot embarks.  Freezing water annoys me.  And I always embark on the main continent, because if I don't kill a goblin every so often, I get twitchy.  I like the elves to show up too.  I think of them as the roving garbage collectors.  Like that guy from Futurama with the accent, and pointy ears.

I like a flat spot to dig a moat for my first defenses.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where do cave spiders spin webs?
« on: August 03, 2013, 06:10:25 pm »
I'm going to go out on a limb and say no one knows the answers to this in any detail.

But from my experience is using rat catchers instead of cats, I'd say they spawn anywhere.  I've caught creepy crawlers on the up/down stairs near my bedrooms.

Oddly enough the raws for creepy crawler say they have butchering returns, but there's no way to butcher them in game.  I have a butcher-anything script I'll try if I ever revisit rat catchers.

I will say that you should catch and tame the spiders then re-release them.  Otherwise they'll disappear.  I think.  Vermin are mysterious.

Only bird that needs food, that I can think of, is the Elk Bird.  The rest live on air and love.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread

1) I am starting to get some results from barracks training: report screen has said in the past that dwarfs were sparring.  It seems to indicate now that they are fighting and I have had 3 deaths during training.  Two were wrestlers that seemed to 'land wrong' (collided with an obstacle) after being thrown and suffered damage that ultimately made them suffocate ... any profit in making a sand floor?

2) Nest boxes ... set up a couple, removed the layers in question from pen and they promptly laid eggs, dwarfs promptly collected (how do I stop that so I can raise more layers?)  The layers followed  the dwarfs and never came back ... I tried making a pen area to include the nest ... tried setting the traffic area to resticted ... might be nice to have some nest toggles like hives have.

3) I read somewhere about using a drawbridge at the edge of the map on the surface to solve the 5 tile barrier ... but any time I have built a drawbridge touching the map edge it does not (at least visually ... I have not had the chance to test access) change when I pull the lever ... yes it is directed, linked, and unoccupied
I haven't seen a training death in a while.  Make sure they have weapons and helmets.

Forbid eggs in the food stockpile and they will leave them to hatch.  The birds leave for 3 months till they're ready to lay again.

Is there an upper limit to Z-levels?
Yeah, if you build into the sky, you'll hit the top in about 20 z

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military announcements
« on: July 25, 2013, 06:23:31 pm »
Everyone but me probably knew this, but going to the 'a'nnouncement screen and leaving makes the messages stop scrolling across the bottom.  Because you've seen them.  Obvious in retrospect.  I hatch a lot of birds, and don't care about the announcement, I just don't want it scrolling across the bottom of my screen for 5 minutes straight.

Tame animals will only be butchered alive.  Because dwarfs are jerks.

Tame animal corpses are refuse.

The hauling update 34.08 added minecarts and I quote, "Falling objects can collide with critters"

Which caused the bay12ers to immediately construct weapons out of these two new things.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cancel ALL the things : Webbed
« on: July 25, 2013, 05:43:01 pm »
Flood the caverns with water/magma.  Webs are destroyed submerged in either.

Rain/snow destroys webs.  Strip mine until caverns are aboveground.

Use the stocks menu or d-b-D to mass dump the webs.  Then use dfhack's autodump to move/destroy them.

That's all I got for now, haven't had my coffee.

There's the quicksave command in dfhack.  You could bind it to a key and use an external program to send the key binding every 30 minutes.

You can use a burrow to break a stuck job like that.

I know this seems an odd question, but is there a way to pass arguments and view the DFHack console through a network?
Remote shell, Ssh or telnet, and dfhack-run.exe.
