How do hospitals work?
I've got stockpiles in my hospital, with soap, splints, crutches, thread and cloth.
I've got tables for surgery, beds for the wounded.
I've got nurses, I've got healers and I've got a CMD.
WHY aren't they healing my dwarves?
I just turn on every medical job for everyone in the fort and it seems to work fine.
Someone might tell me I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be quality levels or anything for medical treatment.

No, if they give bones they give meat.  You just have to wait for turkeys to grow.  Peafowl and geese can be slaughtered as soon as they hatch.

Turkeys do give 2 meat, 2 fat, a skull, and a skin at birth a percentage of the time.  I'm just focused on bone carving so I mostly just track bone returns.

I just started using [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] and I'm never going back.  I love having more choices for embark and different pets brought by migrants.

Oh, and cast names, e.g. all female dogs are bitches, so I know who goes in the cage.

Well I like my forts tidy.  So I generally murder all the pets and children cluttering up the place.

For a while, my standard procedure was to built a column of stairs up to the skybox and then build a bridge and set a burrow for all the pets/kids.  Set a station order at the base of the tower, everyone in my forts is in the militia, and then make it rain.  Good times.

Then v34 came and they started surviving the the fall.  At first I was annoyed, then I realized, free medical training! 

So now I project them from the "Happy Place", that what the burrow is always named, and reset.  All the ones not too crippled crawl back to the burrow.  Rinse and repeat until they are all dead or in the hospital.

I suppose the horrible part is I make sure everyone else is watching when they plummet.

"Best" is a vague term.  I'm guessing you mean volume of bones.

Peafowl and geese are best for bone quantity and a steal at 6 embark points each.

If you want to get nuts, and who doesn't, embark with 48 females and 1 male of each.  You'll have 1000 birds by winter.  And a nightmare of butchering logistics.

Because of the growth bug, you don't need to wait for them to grow up, they never do, but about 1/3 of them give bones right out of the egg.

Cilantro.  Quarry bush leaves are Cilantro.  Goes on everything.

So, I'm still hatching eggs.

There is some growth taking place.  Peafowl and geese give some bones right at birth, chickens and turkeys do not.  But if you, say, forget about the birds for a while and then get back to them because your combat logs are filling up with cat vs bird fights because somehow a cat got locked in your bird room, well then, slaughtering two year old birds is the same.  Except turkeys now give bones.  Easily more than the others.

At some point the turkeys got larger.  Still not full size, maybe 20-30% give bones. 

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd make a graph or something with a lua script. 

Edit: Weird, someone was asking about birds as I typed this.
Has anyone actually tested how this affects domestic birds?
Edit Edit: Yeah, I've hatched about 5000 birds in the last few weeks. 
tl;dr version is raise peafowl or geese and slaughter them immediately for best returns.

So this FB and this group of ant people fought in the caverns.  All the antpersons die except one, but they get some licks in.  The FB is pretty badly crippled.  The last antwoman and the FB face off and fight.

For the next three years.

A blood trail shows their fight traveled up and down 2 z levels and cross two screen of cavern.  Pretty epic, but whatever, and after three years I'm tired of my combat indicator always being red.  So I crack the caves open and send in the Fugly Force Five to kill the FB.  After he's dead, I send them after the antwoman, but I cancel after I notice she is no longer hostile.  She has, in fact, become 'friendly' in the units list. (as well as a Worker Ant Woman Elite Wrestler)

I guess my question is did killing her opponent make her friendly, or did she just look up and notice that everyone else was dead and was like, "hey new friends!"?

I'm setting up a well, and i have two questions:

1. Will water rise up a well and flood the room it is in?
2. Will soil floors stop water?
Yes, if the water below is sourced above the well.
Yes.  Although I've never thought about it before.  That is weird.

Giant Cave Spiders.  If a TRAINED gcs shoots webs on the ground, will regular dwarves (non web collectors) be trapped by the webs?  Not if they get hit by collateral flying webs, but if they walk over a web on the ground.
Yes, they get webbed.  I just embarked with 20 GCS.  For funsies.  Webs everywhere.  Animals and dwarfs stuck all over the place.

Sounds like standard dwarf behavior to me.  Best I've been able to do is move the meeting area to make them stand where I need work done.

Did they produce any bones?  I'm trying to track down a growth bug.  If they were all born in the fort there should have been zero bones produced.  TIA!

Fortifications do not pass liquid downwards. They have an implied floor.  Like a constructed upwards staircase.
