DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: No friends for warriors! Why?

If you delete their barracks, they'll hang out with the other dwarfs instead of in their barracks when they're idle.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Porfil'd forges. How-to?

DFhack has a utility that let's you set up 'R'epeat orders and will suspend them (and re-initiate) them based on parameters set by you. So you could say you wanted to have a target of "x" barrels on hand at any given moment with minimum "x-y" and max "x+y".

It won't assign labors to any workshop and it won't allow repeat orders to be erased. So you can tell each individual workshop what you want produced there, and tell the utility how many you want, and you don't have to worry about shortages or cancellations mucking up your system or about producing millions of lead goblets because you were busy doing something else for too long.

dfhack command is "workflow".  It is awesome.  Just type it with no arguments and it give a fairly complete help.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Pottery vs. Glassmaking
« on: November 10, 2012, 07:24:17 pm »
Fire clay or kaolinite are ok for pots.  But glass can make almost everything.  Furniture, doors, trap components.  Plus magma safe.  It's magic!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Haulers don't Haul/Claim items ??
« on: November 09, 2012, 06:26:07 pm »
If the stockpile is set to use wheelbarrows, they'll only haul with wheelbarrows.  So only 1-3 jobs at once.

Carving tracks on ramps.  You need to designate beyond the ramp in the direction the track goes.

Sparring injuries are from an old version.  No problem if you're playing 34.xx

You can't make arrows.  You can buy arrows from elves and humans.

I like that 'take from upstairs idea'.  This time I just removed bins everywhere and made all the cloth into an auto quantum stockpile.  But I'll try that next time this comes up.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dwarfs attacked by rock?
« on: November 07, 2012, 01:52:32 pm »
I just did this yesterday with a bunch of seeds.

My favorite rock attack so far is a dwarf is carrying a boulder of Cassiterite.  He gets actived to train and for some reason carries the rock to the barracks.  I notice him at this point because he's moving really slow.

Then he starts sparing, and somehow flings the rock and hits himself and his sparring partner.  What an amazing twit.

Lol, I just turned bins on to see if that helps.

They come down the 126 steps from the main fort with a bin, pick up one thread, put it in the bin, toss the whole thing in the minecart and then go back upstairs.

Absolute win.

Ok good, I was worried I'd done something obscurely wrong.  I'd say that taking things out of a stockpile and putting them in another stockpile without any links is definitely a bug.  Off to the bug tracker!

Edit:  Oh good, someone already reported this.  http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5957

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bizzare stockpile behaviour
« on: November 07, 2012, 04:43:42 am »
Here's the problem.  I have loom in the caverns.  I stockpile next to it for cloth that only except from the link to the loom.  Bins are turned off for this one.  I have a minecart route that takes from the cloth stockpile and guides to the top and dumps.

The webs get collected.  The thread gets put into the stockpile.  Then some dumbass with a bin comes all the way down from the fort and gathers up the thread in the bin and walks back.

WTH?  Why is he taking thread from one stockpile and moving it to another one.  I've never seen anything like this.  There are no links whatsoever between the stockpiles.

The minecart works fine.  Every month someone pushes the empty cart to the top and then back.  Woohoo.

And there it goes again while I'm typing this.  Empty cart goes up and down, jackass with bin collects all the thread.  Anyone seen this bug before?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Vampires SUCK!
« on: November 06, 2012, 09:18:09 pm »
A vampire in my last fort was able to eat two people in the middle of my dormitory without anyone seeing it. 100's of dwarfs in all directions.  He must have been like, "Look over there!  A sock on the ground!"

I just had a baby survive 20 cycles or so in a 1000 seed popcorn popper.  Didn't seem to gain any exp or stats.  I need some way to put armor on babies so I can start training them early.

In d_init.txt set
Code: [Select]
[TEMPERATURE:NO]Doubled the fps on my old computer before I upgraded.  Of course, nothing will burn or freeze.  But I wasn't burning or freezing stuff anyway.

And, oddly enough, magma forges still work.  But dragons now breath clouds of friendship instead of fire.

Fire always spreads to everything in the world in my experience.  So flaming charcoal would be more of a nuclear weapon.

I have killed dwarfs by raining frogs on them.
