I had a military squad go all tantrumy on me because I accidentally set "replace clothing" when I didn't mean to.

Took like 3 months to get one of them back into clothes because he tantrumed almost continuously and wouldn't get dressed.

"I'M MAD BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE CLOTHES!"

"Here's some clothes."

"I'M TOO MAD ABOUT NOT HAVING CLOTHES TO TAKE YOUR STUPID CLOTHES!"

I've recently started putting stockpiles near the fort entrance for goblinite to save the round trip.
ammo
clothes
armor
weapons

I guess if you really wanted to micromanage it, you could put stockpiles out by the battlefield.  So they would stack everything in bins there, then delete the stockpiles (or (t) the stockpiles from another one inside.)

Hmm, I may have to try this next time.

Help!

I'm trying to brew, I've got several empty mahogany barrels that I've produced at a furniture stockpile, but when I tell the little buggers to brew they say

"....cancels Brew Drink: Needs empty food storage item"

Not sure what's wrong, is it a bug? I've successfully produced drink this way hundreds of times before.

Help!

When this happens to me I check the path to the stockpile to make sure I didn't lock any doors or remove any stairs accidentally.  Because I do that a lot.

Whatever metal you have the most of is the best for bolts.

I used to train marksdwarves and worry about this stuff.  then I realized if you give enough dwarfs a crossbow and have them fire wildly into the air, the bad things die.

Except that damn deadly dust.  DAMN YOU DEADLY DUST!!!!

You could always pit them over a large Z drop.  If you get lucky you get more than one piece of leather that way too.

I like to pit animals over my meeting area.  So the "party at the quartzite table" gets enlivened with confetti, so to speak.

One fort I did actually pit them into a refuse pile next to a butcher's shop for efficiency.  If you're into that sort of thing.

I just built dfhack last week.  Used gcc/g++ 4.5.  Using 4.6 gave me a bunch of errors.  I am on 32bit Ubuntu Oneiric.

From COMPILE.rst "For building, you need a 32-bit version of GCC. For example, to build DFHack on a 64-bit distribution like Arch, you'll need the multilib development tools and libraries."

Wish I could be more help.

I guess you start by catching a GCS in a cage.
Big Subterranean Arachnids are BUILDINGDESTROYER, so build a door down in the caverns, and surround it with traps 2 deep. 
Large Underground Arthropod sees door, runs to attack it, falls in cage.
Step 1: Complete

Step 3: Profit!

I've killed so many miners trying to dig pits that I now build up in to the sky with up/down staircases instead.  Then  platform up top, plus a retracting bridge for the unpittable children.

Then it's easier to make it rain plump helmet men and migrants and babies on your barracks/meeting area.  Since my barracks and meeting areas are usually up top.  It's like a waterfall, only with children.

How do I get webbed cage traps?

Never done it but check out: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Giant_cave_spider for the silk farm.  You could do the same to web cages.

where do i storage metal bars in?

i have tons of bins but they dont put the bars inside the bins what to do?
Also check your (o)rders screen and make sure dwarfs are set to gather... er... minerals maybe?  I'm not looking at the screen right now.

reveal the map and hit (u), at least in dwarf mode
