Bump with a bit of content:  Barrow gnomes, which are more or less in the spirit of halfling rogues and were developed in order to fill the thief position for when playing a kobold fort/camp.  Feedback (on this and other things in this topic) would be appreciated.

I think I've spotted an error in creature_crustacean_cf.txt;  CRAB_EMERALD and CRAB_SEA_GIANT both have "giant sea crab" in all of their name tokens, I imagine that one of those is supposed to be called something else?

I like the deep elves idea, but can't help you with the concept as I don't know how to mod DF at all. You should do something cool, like when a deep elf dies they explode in a cloud of dust that causes mushrooms or their weird metal plants to grow around their body.
I'm not sure it's possible to have a creature cause plants to grow in DF (aside from farming, anyway).  I think the closest thing is being able to drop seeds on death.  But I still know next to nothing about reactions and interactions, myself...

I'm not entirely satisfied with what I have now, since bugbears lack joints and I don't really understand appearance modifiers enough to do what I'd like with them, and I haven't really tested them extensively beyond just seeing if I've horribly broken anything or not in the object test arena so they might be rather unbalanced, but I think they're in a mostly functional state at the moment.  Also for some reason only the +/-/max comments from the base goblin ATT_RANGEs made it into the forum post correctly.   :-\

I retired a human adventurer in a dwarven town, the game is modded in that sense but I know that you can retire if you're stood in a site even though the buildings don't exist. So, if my adventurer turns up I'll know if it's possible to get a totally vanilla multi-race fort. I could have modded it to get not very many historical figures, which would probably have been a much better idea... as it is, I've just got invasions and such off for safety, temperature and weather off for speed, no FPS cap, and low GFPS, so I'm bobbing around 600/700 at the moment. :)
I believe it's been pretty well established through experiments with the BABYSNATCHER tag and transformation reactions that it's possible to have migrants of other species from the same civ show up and technically be a part of your fort...  But that you can't assign them any labors without help from external utilities.

Personally I actually more readily associate the term naga with snakes than I do the term lamia.  And despite the fact that I've played Frozen Throne the first thing that comes to my mind visually is "mostly normal human upper half, snake lower half" or possibly "snake with an abundance of heads," as they are in real-world religion.

I've been thinking about making a mod that adds in a new playable race of subterranean elves.  To make them more distinct from dwarves, I'm thinking that they should have very limited knowledge of conventional metalworking, instead having unique reactions to produce materials of metal-like quality from farmed plants, extracts, and butchering products probably from all-new creatures.  They also might be mechanically limited, but I'm not quite as certain in regards to that.

Unfortunately, at the moment I don't really understand the raws well enough to do much, especially when it comes to defining materials and reactions, but I'll get to that later.  So far all I have is a creature entry for the prospective deep elves that isn't even really complete.  In particular when it comes to creature tokens I'm confused by the numbers of BODY_SIZE which I only understand in very abstract terms, and APPEARANCE_MODIFIER, which I only understand insofar as the the middle number is more common (unless I understand that wrong) without having any idea what it is those numbers represent.

Playing in a Civ Forge world, got tasked to kill a violet xelic in some catacombs...  I thought I had found them underneath the town keep, but I guess I was wrong as all I found in whatever I was exploring were a bunch of chaos dwarves in the upper levels.  Further down I found a solitary chaos dwarf skeleton lying around before several rooms of absolutely nothing...  Not sure where to look, now.   :-\

Edit:  Found them...  And it turns out that the target and another named xelic along with some marksbugs and three unnamed sword/axe wielders are basically camping right beneath a floor grate and whenever I try sneaking down it and then going back up to get more room to maneuver...  One or two might follow me up but the others all stand around so that I can't go back down the floor grate (Unless I were on the ground, but that would be suicide.)

Mosquito women don't appear to need the bloodsucker tag to drink blood, they just have [APPLY_CREATURE_VARIATION:PROBOSCIS_SUCK_ATTACK] (which, in c_variation_default.txt, comes right after a MOUTH_SUCK_ATTACK which has the same [CV_NEW_TAG:SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD:25:50] as the proscis version).  It's possible that [BLOODSUCKER] makes blood a part of a creature's dietary needs, but I don't know for sure.  I also don't know if a creature that has the bloodsucker tag but no special attack just for sucking blood can survive by drinking blood splatters off of themselves or not.
